“If the system is built on riba, you don’t fix it with paperwork — you exit it.”
Riba Resistance — Episode 5: The Failure of Islamic Finance (w/ Safdar Alam)
This episode cuts through the PR gloss and gets straight to the uncomfortable truth: modern “Islamic finance” hasn’t solved the riba problem. Safdar Alam — someone who spent years inside the industry at the highest levels — explains why the entire architecture mirrors conventional banking, just wrapped in compliant‑looking contracts.
Key Points
1. The industry didn’t remove riba — it replicated it.
Safdar shows how most Islamic products copy the same debt‑based structures, the same incentives, and the same balance‑sheet mechanics. Change the contract names all you want; the economic reality stays the same.
2. The issue isn’t the scholars — it’s the system.
Islamic banks operate inside the same regulatory and liquidity constraints as conventional banks. Within that framework, a truly riba‑free model is structurally impossible.
3. Bitcoin is the first real alternative.
Safdar doesn’t tiptoe around it:
Bitcoin may be the only viable exit from riba‑based monetary systems.
It doesn’t rely on debt, leverage, or interest‑driven money creation.
Its architecture aligns far more closely with Islamic principles of fairness, transparency, and real ownership.
For Muslims seeking financial sovereignty, Bitcoin isn’t a side option — it’s a path out of a system that cannot be reformed from within.
4. A call for honesty.
The episode challenges listeners to confront what many already feel:
Islamic finance hasn’t delivered what it promised.
Ethical finance requires more than cosmetic contract changes.
A riba‑based system cannot be “Islamicised” — it must be replaced.
Overall ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is one of the clearest, boldest episodes in the series. Safdar brings insider knowledge and moral clarity, and the conversation avoids the usual diplomatic language. If you care about digital sovereignty, Islamic ethics, or the future of money, this one is essential.
