If you ever struggle to find anything I highly recommend Bolt & Nut Supplies in Pudsey, where for some 1/4 20s the questions went "Right hand thread?" "Yeah" "How long?" "12mm" "What head?" "Cap head" "Black or silver? I'd recommend the black, its a much nicer finish than the silver ones" "Black then". There's a warehouse full of apparently EVERY fastener you could ever think of, and an extremely comprehensive wall of Dormer drills, taps and dies.

Here's one in the middle of a housing estate in York: https://maps.app.goo.gl/bPqGWtxqLEFWzkMy8
There are quite a few still scattered around the UK, but most are lacking the top section. I've often thought it'd be cool to live in one and have an observatory dome on the top.

At the opposite end of the scale they had a 0.5% oatmeal stout. The silly stuff is insanely good though. Shame they seem to have stopped opening the taproom.

We got a pair of subzero stick PAs from gear4music (its their own brand) for the hackspace. Reasonably cheap, suitably loud (audible in a pretty big room @ leeds light night even though there was a silent disco nextdoor full of screaming kids). Reasonably priced, flexible connectivity, takes up very little room. Obviously a bit modern if you're wanting a retro look.

You say that... But the last one I bought came in its own hardcase, there are 2 sillier, one has the same objective and is slightly longer, but I own a teleconverter, so it would be utterly pointless, and the other last sold for €400k, and as much as I'd love to own THAT legend its just not happening!

I have a bunch of wifi bulbs that run tasmota. You can either reflash them yourself with tuya convert (assuming the bulbs you get don't have a new key - this can be annoying). Or just get preflashed bulbs with either tasmota or esphome from https://www.mylocalbytes.com/
You can then poke them with either mqtt or a web api to make them do things, all local, no data being sent to china.

When I got the FTTC connection from them they were very enthusiastic about getting the line quality improved, sadly it was horrible old corroded brittle aluminium, on a couple of visits by the engineer there was only one leg of the pair connected, he was amazed I was getting any service at all! Thats all in the past now though, FTTP has been wonderfully reliable. I no longer have the excitement of DSL with <1Mb/s down and ~6Mb/s up on random days.

2026-01-09 14:00:06 UTC

Its a false economy. I'm with @npub1sv0…rq9x after the previous supplier decided to stop supplying any copper lines with about 2 weeks notice. They sorted an INCREDIBLY quick install of a replacement FTTC circuit and I've subsequently upgraded to FTTP once it was available. Not the cheapest, but absolutely worth every penny.
