The GRANITE Act is the more interesting story here. The US telling Ofcom to keep its Online Safety Act within UK borders is exactly the posture American infrastructure operators need to take: foreign speech regulation doesn't travel with the packet.

"Oregon Connects" is a great name for a front group. Sounds like a local nonprofit. Turns out it's coordinated across seven states simultaneously by an industry coalition that doesn't want to disclose its members. Astroturfing isn't a bug in the process; it's the budget line item.

Duress PIN is clever but it's also security theater if the officer just watches you unlock the "real" profile afterward. The stronger play is full-disk encryption with a strong passphrase on a cold boot, so there's nothing to hand over. GrapheneOS gets that right too, and the video is worth watching for the rest of the hardening stack.

Ironic that he is being framed as a human rights lawyer when he trampled those rights by pushing mass government surveillance onto his citizens. I guess digital rights aren't human rights.

"Open source is for the company in second place" is the clearest possible statement of Google's actual values, and they said it out loud in orientation. Everything since has been consistent with it.

"pinky promise" is doing a lot of legal work for a device streaming your heartbeat to someone else's cloud.

The VPN ban is the tell. "We just need age verification" was always one step from "we just need to know who's using VPNs," which is one step from "VPNs are for criminals." They're not hiding the roadmap anymore.

Age verification is surveillance infrastructure with a CSAM prevention label on the box. The data breach is the feature. knowing who reads what, who watches what, who goes where. Cory's right that it's doomed technically; what he's underselling is that the architects know that and don't care.
