these open source freedom tech ai projects should maybe look at optimizing for his workflow. all that token spend is going to claude. it should be flowing through open platforms first. 👀

Lightning is interesting as well. It has a similar privacy strategy to Monero. Lightning transactions break up information into lots of tiny pieces and spread them around so that it is exceedingly hard to reassemble all the pieces. But not impossible!
If you were able to grep the logs of every lightning node involved in a specific transaction you could pretty trivially identify the sender, receiver, and amount.
Even bolt12 transactions with route blinding are not immune to this attack. Fortunately it's a very difficult thing to accomplish and not worth the effort for the small amounts of value transmitted via lightning.
@nprofile…eg3s gave a brief talk complaining about lightning node logging practices because he understands this property of lightning. If node operators purged their logs on a regular basis then that information goes away forever. Unfortunately this is not the default behavior. Hopefully that changes.

I have always liked Monero better. It uses complex mixing techniques at spend time to break information into lots of little pieces and spread them around on-chain.
(I am not a cryptographer or a Monero expert so don't take my word for truth. This is my flawed high level understanding of the system.)
When you spend monero your wallet generates a ring signature with random addresses from the blockchain. This strategy is basically to make it exceedingly hard to reassemble that information in a way that can be used to identify the spender. You would have to find the owners of all the addresses in the ring signature and use the process of elimination to identify the true spender. That's really hard to do!
This is a robust privacy system that works in practice. Notice it spreads the trust among many participants. The genius of the system is they are randomly selected from past transactions non-interactively. So they don't need to be online or even be aware that their coins are contributing to someone else's anonymity.
The downside of this system is it's complexity. Monero can't do anything even close to smart contracts.
The trust assumptions are also siloed in a single system. That could be a problem if/when that system is broken. Monero devs are aware of this fact and have been continuously upgrading it's privacy properties for the entire history of the project. It's an arms race. Those devs are elite endurance athletes. Mad respect.

Zcash is the combination of a transparent trustless system and an opaque private system.
Their mistake was to silo all of the trust in their privacy system. Single point of failure. Not resilient.
AI came along and...it failed. 💥
No more zcash. 🫗

2026-06-05 18:18:01 UTC

On-chain bitcoin is transparent for a reason. It's the only way to ensure trustlessness. Watch privacy coins learn this lesson in real time. Learn from their mistakes.
I believe there is a fundamental and unavoidable conflict between privacy and trustlessness. Trustless systems require information to disseminate. Private systems must prevent the spread of information. Builders who don't understand this spectrum are doomed to fall prey to it.
You cannot achieve perfect privacy and perfect trustlessness in the same system. It's better to build two systems and move value between them as needed. The trust-based system better be resilient to failure; that means lots of little trusted operators rather than one big trust silo.
That's what I tried to encapsulate in this image. TBD whether ecash can be made verifiable. Much work still to be done.

I have also had issues with iphone lockdown mode failing to render the correct fonts. It's not a dealbreaker but it looks ugly and is not the best first impression to make.
Best is to switch to a thick client app in this case. For android I recommend minibits, macadamia on iPhone. But the best wallet keeps changing. eNuts is making a comeback for iPhone. Minibits also just launched on iPhone iirc.
I'm not an iphone user so I just crowdsource app recommendations. YMMV

For those in the back of the room, JB is squirming because he has painted himself into a corner and made an indefensible claim. Or rather he has implied an indefensible claim: that ecash mints do not deserve to be treated with the same safety and security standards that apply across the board to all software projects.
When you base your belief system on dogma instead of principled logic you wind up with logical contradictions and (if you are not intellectually honest) the only recourse is to start denying reality.
We can see this behavior on full display in this thread.
The entire software world has settled on reasonable standards for software vulnerability disclosures. Of course "it's just made up"! Literally every human institution is just made up. This includes money, government, religion, marriage, language, and even software vulnerability disclosure best practices. We made them up for good reasons and we enforce them with vigor by ostracizing people who violate those norms.
JB first advocated for a double standard to be applied to ecash mints. When I pushed him to be explicit on this he retreated to a position claiming that the institution of responsible disclosure is illegitimate.
You see how this works? When a logical contradiction is highlighted dogmatics deny reality to avoid admitting their error and, in the process, making an even more egregious error. They are willing to destroy the very system they claim to be protecting in order to cling to their beliefs in the face of contrary evidence. Sound familiar? You are KNOT going to believe who else thinks this way!
Users are not children that need to be protected from their own decisions. Users can and must make informed decisions on the risk tradeoffs of custodial systems.
Denying people the ability to make these decisions does not increase the level of attainable freedom and human prosperity in the world, it contracts it.
Satoshi sacrificed privacy to build a decentralized, trust-minimized system. He didn't do it because he hates privacy, he did it because it was the only way to make the system work. It was the right abstraction.
We can regain our privacy by making the opposite tradeoff on a different layer and enabling people to permissionlessly move value between the layers. This is the right abstraction.
Ecash is here to stay. More people are building on cashu every day because it has the right balance of usability, efficiency, and privacy. I believe we have achieved escape velocity. Y'all are gonna be blown away by the shit coming down the pipeline!
Watch as the haters get increasingly desperate to stop the coming flood of permissionless, frictionless digital cash. They can't stop it. It's too late. The genie is out of the bottle. The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed.

Transaction relay is a secondary concern to bitcoin nodes. The primary concern is relaying and validating blocks. Bolting on transaction relay to a block-first node network is an antipattern. This is apparent when you consider the negative externalities of transaction relay. Namely:
- the many DOS risks inherent in validating transactions
- the social attack vectors that tx relay opens (see the most recent OP_RETURN war)
- vulnerabilities created by building features on top of tx relay (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/33106#issuecomment-3155627414 )
- mempool policy 🤮
A better design would be to relay transactions over some other decentralized network and submit them to mining node mempools via an API. This moves the DOS risk to another layer of the stack where it can be better isolated and mitigated. This design protects the most essential functions of a bitcoin node: producing, relaying, and validating bitcoin blocks. It removes the social attack vector that is mempool policy by removing the need for policy entirely. I wonder if anyone is building out a truly decentralized network that would work for transaction relay... 🤔🤔🤔
Endogenous transaction fees introduce unnecessary complexity to trustless protocols built on top of bitcoin (layer 2s). See the sole remaining valid criticism of CTV: when you need to construct transactions ahead of time, endogenous fees ruin your day. This problem is handily solved with a robust and decentralized network capable of carrying transaction fee payments. I wonder if anyone is building out a truly decentralized network, perhaps including bearer asset digital tokens, that would work for exogenous transaction fees... 🤔🤔🤔
"But vnprc, without a global mempool state, how are we supposed to predict when a transaction is going to get mined?"
Great question, anon! Nodes would be better served to take their transactions from weak blocks. This is a much stronger signal than endogenous fees because it indicates which transactions have real hashrate behind them. You no longer need to look at a secondary indicator (fee rate) to estimate what you are primarily interested in (time to confirmation). In other words, weak blocks account for out of band transaction accelerators. Bonus: a robust weak block network is a necessary condition for a decentalized mining pool. I wonder if anyone is working on a mining pool concept using a blockchain or block dag of weak blocks... 🤔🤔🤔
The security budget problem is better framed as the mismatch of blockspace demand and blockspace supply. Demand is variable and, due to the 1MB block size limit hack introduced by Satoshi, block space supply is fixed. When demand is low (paper bitcoin summer) miners struggle to earn tx fees due to an oversupply of blockspace. When demand is high users are forced to pay exorbitant fees to get their transactions mined with any urgency. The economic problems this creates for miners are concealed by the block subsidy, which vastly overshadows miner profit from transaction fees. The subsidy is going away so the logic of a variable block size will become apparent in time. It's inevitable, really.
A block size adjustment algorithm akin to the difficulty adjustment algorithm would allow the block size to change over time to match demand. So when suitcoiners dominate trading with offchain receipts, blocks will shrink and miners can extract more profit from less transactions. Miner profits will revert to the mean in time. When the hottest new on-chain metaprotocol drops and tx fees go parabolic the block size will adjust upward and users can get some relief from astronomical fees. Again, miner earnings will revert to the norm over time.
Satoshi created the transaction relay network because there was not an alternative at the time. It was the simplest solution to get out the gate. But this solution necessitated a bunch of ugly hacks on top of transaction validation. We have been tip toeing around policy limitations ever since. If you have never attempted to build unusual bitcoin transactions before, then take it from me: policy sucks. It's terrible and everyone hates it.
Endogenous fees were a necessary condition for bitcoin to launch because before bitcoin there was no other way to transmit trustless digital monetary value. Today, we have alternative solutions that would better solve this problem.
Satoshi yolo'd the block size limit out there as a quick and dirty fix to a long term existential problem. He likely knew he wasn't going to be around for the long haul so he built a suboptimal but permanent solution.
The bitcoin network has evolved substantially since Satoshi vanished. We don't need to use the same architecture going forward. Continuing to do something just because that's how it was done in the past is often a terrible idea.
We need to reimagine what the bitcoin network should look like from first principles without blindly adhering to the legacy architecture that we inherited. To do otherwise is to invite failure. Bitcoin is too important to let it fail.

some unorthodox ideas that are probably inevitable:
- transaction relay should not take place on the bitcoin peer-to-peer network
- endogenous fees are more harmful than beneficial, exogenous fees are the future
- variable block size solves the security budget problem

You don't need final settlement to hard money on push micropayments. It's the wrong model. Ecash does this use case better than lightning. No amount of mental gymnastics can change this fact.
