BTW there is some progress on suspend on RK3588. sigrid and josch (and some others) on the mnt-reform IRC channel have s2idle working. for me it almost works, but my NVMe doesn't come up properly after resume. it seems like this can be solved soon though.

i've been struggling a lot to make USB-C DisplayPort alt-mode work on the RK3588 MNT Pocket Reform with MB2.0, incl. charging and USB hub functions of the monitor, all over a single cable. this included partially reverse-engineering and implementing the vendor defined messages (VDM) for activating these modes in system controller firmware, and patching RK3588 drivers. it's not yet 100% reliable, but when it works, it's quite nice

OK, our little computer/server/NAS is online at Crowd Supply: https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt-research/mnt-station
The main idea was to have a high-end enclosure for the classic MNT Reform mainboard to give it a second life, but you can as well build an open hardware computer from the parts.
We're also publishing 3D printable versions of the cases, and there will be more photos and use case details in upcoming campaign posts.

as a linux integrator and power user, i want full control of display modelines/frequencies and color space selection on mainstream desktops (gnome). right now i have an issue of extreme color banding on qcs8550+an IVO panel on eDP and kms debug says that something selected "YCbCr limited range" and i have no (known to me) way to influence that

2026-08-15 11:44:16 UTC

so... did anyone have success installing the new firmware version + kernel combination on MNT Pocket Reform? i know two instances where it went badly, both were on the unofficial Debian stable/trixie image. would be good to hear if it went smoothly for you and on which hardware.

2026-08-14 17:43:12 UTC

i think one of the biggest timewasters on the linux (gnome) desktop for me right now is that programs/the system has a hard time remembering previous "save as" folder locations. i desperately wish these last used folders would appear in "Recent" in the file picker, or in a new "Recent Locations" or sth... and no, the bookmarks/faves aren't good enough, because this quickly gets cluttered and has to be manually audited. also that doesn't work across UI toolkits...

2026-08-13 13:50:06 UTC

hmmm mnt gitlab is down-ish because it's pummeled by crawlers because iptables ipset doesn't seem to work anymore? i get a lot of "ipset v7.19: Element cannot be added to the set: it's already added" from my realtime blocking script, which shouldn't be possible as these IPs shouldn't be able to pass the firewall in the first place

2026-08-12 16:29:46 UTC

the 10 first MNT Pocket Reforms with preinstalled Mainboard 2.0 are ready to ship (from MNT Shop orders). this reduces the lead time to <6 months (our website shows 8-10)

2026-08-12 15:32:28 UTC

root caused the backlight flicker (above certain brightness level which i clamped in firmware) on some pocket reform display v2 panels: the seller of the panels made this flex adapter for us to make the pinout compatible with the display v1 (eol, made by jdi), which has a pwm controller boost converter/led driver (?). the trace carrying 3v3 input supply is too flimsy for the potentially large currents. bypassing with a wire fixes the issue...

just writing something down that just occured to me, might be old hat, but to not forget it later:
- llms are not turing complete, or at least their runtime is severly bounded (expensive)
- there must be a limit to which they can reliably apply chained word/symbol replacement rules ("translations"), in one shot
- same must apply for "reasoning" about call graphs, because that's modeling control flow or compilation, i.e. constructing an internal stack
- overflow this stack

PSA update: i missed to include the following update command in my original instructions:
`sudo apt install reform-tools`
You need reform-tools 1.88 or newer for the new mnt-sc driver to be included in initramfs. Otherwise, the display only turns on very late in the boot process, and isn't able to reset properly nor control the brightness on display v2.

the idea is to have a case where you can mount a pair of these, put in 8x 18650 LiFePO4 cells and have a slot where the 2 picolock cables can come out. we're launching the MNT Station soon, which is a desktop/server case for the MNT Reform mainboard, and it has holes on the back where these cables can go in.

it doesn't make any sense. linux and the gpl have no technical reason to exist. one could've just bought a copy of unix, right? oh, some people couldn't afford unix, or wanted a bit more control about their own computers? just took some pictures of the new MNT Pocket Keyboard (small standalone USB-C keyboard with integrated optical trackball and RGB backlight) that's coming to our shop at some point next week. the case is a mix of aluminum (top plate) and Multi Jet Fusion printed Nylon (HP PA 12 S). in my opinion it feels really nice in the hands. open source hardware, of course.

my bose qc gen1 earbud's case recently stopped working (3 flashing leds). looks like it's totally unrepairable and replacement case costs like 80 eur/$99. are there any earbuds with repairable or generic charging cases, or other recommendations? also considering cabled usb-c earbuds if there's such a thing

having some memory/recall issues. i had trouble recalling the word "hypocrite" for like 10-15 minutes. i knew the meaning i wanted to express and had a feeling it has "hy" or "hyp" in it but it was shadowed by words like "hubris", "hyperbole", "hypochondriac". i had to resist to google it and while showering i tried to describe the word in more detail in my head, and then suddenly it was there. recently i also couldn't recall the name "kurt vile". i wonder if normal/stress/age/nutrition

last night i was sitting until almost 4am battling that damn usb-c to displayport cable... i was able to record the PD communication on the CC lines between my phone and a display, and it all looks perfectly reasonable. but i can't yet get the cable to respond to pocket reform's fusb302. it just doesn't respond, and fusb302 doesn't want to send it any more messages after trying a couple of resets. my guess is i'm still holding VCONN wrong/my patched in vconn line doesn't work

it's so silly that every SaaS app has now pivoted to "the XZY platform for developers *and agents*" or "the best XYZ platform *for AI*". if everyone does that it's not a differentiator, if you really need that crap you can put it in a checkmark in your feature table...

this is the culmination of an 8-months part time effort, mostly by @nprofile…g0vp who ported all the missing display drivers and did a lot of bugfixing and polishing, with some little spikes by myself here and there. also thanks to @nprofile…9gys for the friendly support navigating @nprofile…tts2 code.

working on a tricky upside-down solution to integrate 2 extra USB-C ports in MNT Station, so that you can drive 3 displays from it using RCORE RK3588 (1x HDMI + 2x DP). this can also be adapted for the classic MNT Reform
