My parents got their Covid shot this morning.
My mom only gets it because I practically begged her to keep getting it every year.
My dad only gets it if my mom brings him along.
They don’t even get any negative side effects like I do.
This year for whatever reason my dad declared he wouldn’t get the shot.
He is notorious for being contrary just because. Like a pouty toddler who just wants to say no.
You know what convinced him to get it?
My mom told him about the research she read that it can help ward off Alzheimer’s. His mother had Alzheimer’s so he’s seen first-hand what that looks like and he doesn’t want to experience it.
So if you know an elder who needs some selfish reason to get the Covid vaccine, that might convince them.

Fedi folks I need guidance on where to direct someone who is seeking therapy in Ottawa, ON, for a divorce that seems to have been triggered by the one admitting to exploring gender non-conformity and the wife not handling it well. They are both Muslim and are fairly new immigrants.
I don’t have direct contact with this person so I’d be passing on some suggestions. It seems like they have the means to pay for private practice if needed. It would be for individual counselling (not for the wife).
It also sounds like this person isn’t out or open about their gender exploration (so I’m not sure an LGBTQ centre would be their preferred place to find resources), but has expressed a wish to be in a woman’s body and in women’s clothing.

Something I didn’t know about Canada: only 1/4 of Canadians get their mail delivered directly to their door.
So if you live in a house and have your mail delivered to a mailbox next to your front entrance you are in the minority.
In the next 5 years 4 million addresses will switch to shared mailboxes (like we apartment building residents have in the entrance lobby or like in rural areas where there’s a cluster of mailboxes when you enter town).

I love documentaries and l I also love football (soccer) so I was excited to watch one that includes women’s football (not too many out there, especially ones that don’t focus entirely on the US women’s national team).
I’ve only watched two episodes but The World According to Football (2023), narrated by Trevor Noah, is one of the best I’ve seen.
IMDB rating is low because the men who gave the rating thought it was about their faves kicking a ball around instead of a social commentary on how “The Beautiful Game” mirrors society.
The documentary doesn’t shy away from criticizing the US sports infrastructure and capitalism.
The 5 episode series talks about marginalized athletes and starts right away with a focus on women. The first episode made me cry. It was beautiful.
The second episode includes a segment about the Portland Community Football Club founded by a trans man named Kai Lightner (see the post in the thread above with an article about PCFC and Lightner) and interviews ex USWNT and #NWSL footballer Crystal Dunn who has been supporting the club for about 4 years.
I found the documentary on Paramount+ and I believe it’s also on Apple TV. Ignore the whiny boys’ ratings and go watch it. You don’t need to know much about sports or football to enjoy the series.

When I was briefly an assistant manager for the Hyatt Hotel coffee shop I found out the expectation from higher ups. They crack down on managers for wage expenses in their departments.
Managers don’t even have to clock in and out (and are often expected to work longer than 8hrs/day) but closely supervise employee timesheets. Wages are the most expensive part of running a café (especially with union-fought wages as opposed to most cafés’ minimum wage).
Even the most awesome manager will turn into a “Karen” when they have GMs breathing down their neck about every extra minute they pay employees.
Corporations are greedy fuckers and I was swept up in it for a few years.
I was never the one to send those emails because I was the assistant and refused to be promoted but even in my role I felt wrong about so many things asked of me.
Now with my greater understanding of life I wouldn’t even be able to do the job. It has made me very unhireable.

Queer people creating good news for queer kids. This is what community care looks like:
«Portland Community Football Club founder Kaig Lightner, a 44-year-old trans man, organizes youth soccer teams based on skill level, instead of sex or gender.
[…]
PCFC welcomes players ages six to 18, so long as they promise to accept their fellow teammates.
The organization is also dedicated to making sports more financially accessible to all young people, moving away from a “pay-to-play” model and instead getting support from partner organizations at the local and national level.
[…]
The club also offers “wrap-around” services, including a food pantry, language translation services, and rides to practice.»

My grandmother on my dad’s side gave my brother and I all the Tintin et Milou books which I did like back in the day, but I love Astérix et Obélix. I loved the play on words for their names.
Looking back on Tintin with adult eyes, though, I can see so many cringy racist portrayals of non-white characters all over the world. Lots of sexism too.

2025-07-18 01:44:51 UTC

Just watched the latest “Astérix et Obélix: le combat des chefs” on Netflix and it was a lot of fun.
The animation was more artful and beautiful than I expected and there’s some anti-colonial messaging as well as some Avengers references.
If, like me, you grew up on the books you’ll find the 5-episode show satisfying. There’s plenty of adult humour and inside jokes that most young kids won’t notice.
One warning though: there’s lots of flashing (every time they take the magic potion - which is a LOT especially in the first and last episodes).
I had to look away in those scenes. If someone is very sensitive to flashing it’s maybe best to skip it, but you have a split second warning because they swallow the potion before the full screen flashing.
Another pleasant surprise is that the show has a really good soundtrack.

2025-07-16 17:18:14 UTC

I keep thinking of @npub1jay…80k8 when I see auto translate show things like this.
Maybe not a big deal if someone can see the image of a cute baby deer (aka fawn) but confusing if someone can’t.
I ran the original German in another translator and it said:
“Photo of a small fallow deer, a few weeks old. Delicate fur, sugar-sweet big eyes and ears.”
Makes much more sense than a “small dam brain” 😅
Now imagine this kind of error by artificial “intelligence” in a government context. Yikes.

It’s looking pretty rainy next weekend in Vancity so possibly also in Hope. 15°C from what I see but wet in 15 or less is not fun. I’d prioritize warmth and dryness over fashion.
If there’s a dinner and dance I assume that’s indoors? Surely they must’ve thought of some rain contingency.
You can all get fashionable on the dance floor. Shake off the wet hair like a shampoo model 😂

Are they having the wedding outside in 10°C? Yikes. Might rain too.

It all started to go downhill with automatic windows. I remember my mom telling me that having a manual rolling window might be the only thing that saves you if your car is submerged in water.
I also don’t own a car but I think about that all the time when I’m in a rental or in someone else’s car.

I spent way too long redoing the water trying to get the reflection looking the way I wanted and in the end I just had to stop and be at peace with it. It’s hard to kick the perfectionism out.
One day I’ll get it to look like I have it in my head and I’ll probably cry tears of joy 😅

Every year there’s a post about the latest UBI (Universal Basic Income) experiment (I’m convinced the “experiments” are going to be perpetual to avoid actually implementing it anywhere).
Every single time there’s some qualifier like “people didn’t lose the will the work” or “productivity didn’t go down” or “people went back to school for training” or “poor people didn’t even spend it on alcohol” or some such capitalist BS and it makes me rage that we still think people are only worthy of survival if they are employed or busting a gut trying to be employed.
I wish we’d change the name so the word “income” is removed. Universal Basic Survival Rate isn’t a sexy term but that’s basically what we’re trying to say when most of us want UBI.
It’s the bare minimum amount to be able to afford a basic quality of life given that we still put a price on housing, food, healthcare, education, etc.
It is NOT a replacement for improving access and quality of housing or food or healthcare or education.
It is NOT only for people who can or want to work. It is for EVERYONE. Otherwise it’s no better than what many of us have now.

Must’ve been quite the cleanup job. I guess you now also need a new dish. Will that make you cautious about using glass in the oven again? Maybe get a ceramic one to appease the ghost

Sometimes I hold back from responding to a recent post that has a typo to give the person a moment to catch it and edit quietly. Always makes me smile when I see a few minutes later that they made the change 😁

I was invited by my parents to go out to a pub for a Saint Patrick’s Day dinner.
At the end of our meal I asked the server if they had port (it wasn’t on the menu but their bar looked fully stocked).
He looked confused like he’d never heard of this thing called “port”.
He checked and, yes, they did indeed have port. He came back to the table with a red wine glass with at least 5oz of port in it and my jaw dropped.
If you don’t know, port is usually served in a small glass and it’s usually about 3oz.
He charged us only $6cad for almost a double portion 😅
