When political opponents are depicted being stabbed or beheaded, and the response is to double down rather than apologise, perhaps we should stop pretending One Nation is just another harmless protest party.
Fascism doesn't arrive wearing a uniform and announcing itself. It can creep in through dehumanisation, manufactured hatred and the normalisation of political violence, disguised as a joke.
Australia should know better than to laugh this stuff off.

Now the AFP commissioner is warning about the link between inflammatory political rhetoric and threats against MPs.

This is how it starts. In Nazi Germany, the Nazis systematically silenced independent media, shut down opposition newspapers and replaced scrutiny with propaganda. One Nation is now banning the ABC and The Guardian from its press conferences. History teaches us why a free press matters. Politicians who want power must be held to account, not allowed to choose who gets to ask the questions.

A bit concerning if you’re thinking about buying a BYD.
Four Corners got a cybersecurity expert to hack a BYD Shark 6. He was able to remotely control the lights, wipers, locks and audio, track the vehicle and activate its microphone.
The really worrying part? The expert says the access didn’t even require a password.
And Australia apparently has stronger cybersecurity requirements for connected washing machines and vacuum cleaners than it does for cars.
Maybe the rush to put computers on wheels has got a little ahead of the security.

This Murray River wetland is a glimpse of a carp-free future
Managers shut the wetland off from the river, dried it out to kill the carp, then carefully refilled it with screens that keep big carp out. Result: crystal-clear water, thriving aquatic plants, native fish, frogs, turtles & birds.
European carp still dominate much of the Murray–Darling (up to 90% of biomass in some spots) and the river downstream of the Darling is now listed as critically endangered. The carp herpes virus is still 2 years off, so these local exclusion trials are showing what’s possible right now.
A blueprint for other sites while we wait for the bigger biological control.

The irony here is hard to miss.
The article worries that anti money laundering laws might put downward pressure on house prices, but barely acknowledges the obvious question: how much of Australia’s extraordinary property inflation has been fuelled by dirty money in the first place?
AUSTRAC says real estate is a very high money-laundering risk, and the Australian Institute of Criminology says illicit funds can artificially push property prices higher and outbid legitimate buyers.
Maybe falling prices aren’t the problem. Maybe some of the prices were never legitimate to begin with.
Housing should be a place to live, not a washing machine for criminal wealth.

The latest Four Corners investigation is a damning indictment of how we're "solving" the housing crisis. We're handing public money, planning concessions, and loans to private developers—and in return, renters are getting "affordable" housing that often isn't affordable at all.
This isn't a market failure; it's a policy failure by design. When you outsource public good to profit-driven developers with zero accountability, this is the predictable result. We need genuine public housing, not corporate welfare dressed up as a solution.

Pauline Hanson calling this “the Norway model” is political marketing. Norway taxes the hell out of gas companies, keeps strong public control, and uses the profits to build one of the world’s biggest sovereign wealth funds for the public good.
Hanson’s version was launched at an oil and gas industry conference, scraps the PRRT, opposes stronger export taxes, and is wrapped around expanding offshore gas projects. Even Reuters noted she opposed Labor’s domestic reservation plan that gas companies dislike.

Labor has finally walked away from its promise not to touch negative gearing and capital gains tax. And honestly, good.
That “no changes” line during the 2025 election always felt more about protecting investors than fixing housing. The tax system has been rewarding people who already own multiple properties while locking younger Australians and renters out of the market.
This budget changes that.
Negative gearing will no longer apply to existing homes, while new builds stay exempt. The 50% CGT discount is being scrapped and replaced with an inflation based adjustment. Trusts will also face a 30% minimum tax rate.
The government says the changes will raise $8.1 billion over four years, with the money going into a $250 tax offset for 13.3 million workers.
Yes, Labor spent years insisting these reforms were off the table. But at least they’ve finally admitted the housing market is distorted by tax policy and decided to do something about it.
A progressive government should be willing to upset wealthy investors if it means making life fairer for renters, workers, and first home buyers.
Predictably, the usual “tax is theft” crowd will scream blue murder. But shifting the balance away from unearned property wealth and back toward people who actually work for a living is long overdue.

It's not 'immigrants bad' — it's reckless, profit-driven policy that flooded the market without building enough homes or infrastructure.
Australia, take note. Treating people as cheap labour for landlords and developers while young Aussies get priced out is failing us all.

Heartbreaking: Thousands of fluffy emperor penguin chicks have drowned as Antarctic sea ice shatters beneath them — too early for the babies to swim or stay warm.
The IUCN has now officially listed emperor penguins as Endangered. Record-low sea ice, driven by global heating, is collapsing their breeding grounds. Entire colonies are falling into the ocean. Chicks that don't drown often freeze to death, soaked and helpless.
This isn't some distant future scenario. It's happening now — in 2022 alone, four out of five colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea were wiped out. Scientists are calling them a "sentinel species": what we're doing to the planet is playing out in real time on the ice.
The emperor penguin’s move to endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes.

Agreed — Indian citizens aren't seeing any benefit from this either. This isn't about India or its people; it's about Adani Group using debt structures to shift Australian profits back to the parent company in India as repayments, avoiding tax here while paying some to India's government.
Article shows $1.27B revenue in Aus → $0 tax paid locally, but taxes flow to India (~$40M from Aus ops recently). Profits stay with the company, not trickling down to ordinary Indians or funding Aussie services. The issue is corporate tax avoidance across borders, not nations or peoples. Blame the loopholes and execs, not countries.

Oh look, another banner year for Adani's Carmichael miracle! $1.27 BILLION in revenue shovelled out of Queensland's dirt in FY25. Australian corporate tax contributed? A generous $0.00. Because, naturally, all those 'profits' are magically transformed into 'debt repayments' to the mothership in India. Who needs taxable income when you've got creative accounting that would make a magician blush?
Meanwhile, Queensland's LNP government just gifted them another royalty deferral sweetheart deal — because why collect what the public is owed when you can defer it indefinitely and call it 'investment boost'? Hundreds of millions potentially shortchanged on royalties (experts reckon up to $625M over a few years if they weren't flogging coal at suspiciously low prices to related parties). But hey, Adani promises it'll all pay back... someday... with interest. Sure. Just like that $22 billion in taxes & royalties they swore would fund our schools and hospitals forever. How's that going, by the way?
Gautam Adani loves banging on about 'transparency' in India — voluntarily sharing tax reports, setting benchmarks, the works. Here in Oz? Crickets. Ghosted harder than a bad tinder date. While the minerals council runs ads screaming 'Mining pays for medicare!', Adani's busy proving the loophole is mightier than the tax code.
Aussies pay their taxes so billionaires can play hot potato with profits across borders. Classic. Who's ready for round two of subsidising coal barons while our services crumble?

Thirty years on, Keating's words have never rung truer.
Howard didn't just change the government; he systematically dismantled the social contract. From housing (CGT discount + negative gearing) to wages (Work Choices), the results are everywhere we look today: stagnant pay, a generation locked out of homes, and gaping inequality.
The piece nails how his policies actively fueled division—using immigration as a wedge while creating the conditions Hanson thrived on. And the long-term fiscal vandalism? $115 billion a year in concessions that overwhelmingly flow to the wealthy.
It’s a crucial reminder that the problems we face aren’t accidental. They were engineered. Worth a read in full.

Aussies are stunned: Treasury just confirmed we’ll rake in $2.7B from beer excise in 2025-26… but only $1.5B from PRRT on our massive offshore gas exports. We’re one of the world’s biggest LNG exporters, yet multinational gas giants pay less tax than punters pay on a slab.
This is broken. Gas companies dodge super-profits tax with endless deductions while everyday drinkers get slugged. Time to fix PRRT, slap on real royalties or a flat export tax, and build a proper sovereign wealth fund for future generations—not corporate handouts.
Why are we taxing beer harder than billion-dollar gas rip-offs? Tax the extractors, not the exhausted.

Shocking new data: Australia is the MOST EXPENSIVE country in the developed world to send a kid to high school!
Families pay an average of $4,967 per year per child – almost 4× the OECD average of ~$1,262.
Why? Over 40% of high schoolers go private (2nd highest in OECD, only behind Chile), and fees average >$11k/year, reaching up to $55k at elite schools.
Public schools are cheap (or free), but the massive private sector drags the national average sky-high.
This didn't happen by accident. The privatisation push started under the Howard government: scrapping the New Schools Policy (allowing easy new private schools in existing areas) + generous funding changes that boosted private enrolments and let fees soar.
Result? A two-tier system where wealthy schools get huge public subsidies + high fees, while public schools face funding shortfalls and many families get squeezed.
We need radical reform – not more taxpayer cash to schools that don't need it.

The next BRICS summit is quietly planning a seismic shift. On the agenda: a new, independent payment system to bypass the US dollar and SWIFT.
This isn't just about efficiency. It's a direct, structural challenge to Western financial hegemony—a system used as a weapon for sanctions, coercion, and enforcing neoliberal order.
Faster, cheaper transactions are the selling point. The real potential? A tectonic crack in the architecture of imperial power. It could allow nations in the Global South to trade without fear of arbitrary exclusion or having their assets frozen by the US and its allies for stepping out of line.
Dollar dominance isn't natural; it's enforced. Building alternative rails is a necessary step toward a multipolar world, breaking a key lever of control.

Australia now has 48 billionaires (up 8 since 2020, because why not?), and these 48 people collectively hold more wealth than the bottom 40% of the entire population — that's roughly 11 million everyday Aussies combined.
Meanwhile, the average Aussie billionaire's wealth grew by almost $600,000 per day over the past year. That's right — while rents climb, groceries hurt, and 3.7 million people (including 757,000 kids) live below the poverty line, the ultra-rich are casually printing half a mil a day. Totally normal, totally moral.
Oxfam is calling it what it is: inequitable, unsustainable, and amoral.
Their big ask? A 5% wealth tax on billionaires alone could've raised $17.4 billion just last year — enough to fund universal cheap childcare, extend energy bill relief for years, massively boost humanitarian aid, and actually ease the housing/childcare squeeze that's crushing everyone else.
Throw in scrapping negative gearing, killing the capital gains tax discount for the wealthy, and maybe a broader progressive wealth tax on the top 0.5%, and suddenly there's real money to fix the things governments always say "we can't afford".
But sure, let's keep protecting the system that lets 48 people out-wealth 11 million, while the rest of us argue about whether $2 milk is a human right. Classic Australia 2026.
Tax the rich. Disrupt the vicious cycle. Make billionaires pay their fair share for once.

Calling Wilcox’s cartoon “unacceptable” misunderstands both satire and journalism. Political cartoons are meant to be provocative, compressed and confronting. They exaggerate power relationships to expose hypocrisy and danger, not to offer polite balance.
This cartoon does exactly that. It highlights unchecked US imperial behaviour and the hollow language of “freedom and security” used by institutions like NATO while aggression proceeds regardless. Discomfort is not a flaw, it is the point.
If a cartoon criticising military power is deemed unacceptable simply because it offends those aligned with that power, then the problem is not the cartoon. It is a shrinking tolerance for dissent and satire in public debate.
Wilcox is doing a great job.

It is absolutely infuriating to see the US securing an exemption from the OECD global tax deal. Once again, the interests of multinational corporations are being prioritised over global equity.
While the rest of the world attempts to set a floor on the "race to the bottom" by implementing a 15% minimum corporate tax, the US is carving out a loophole that allows its biggest companies to continue dodging their fair share. This isn't just a technicality; it’s a direct assault on the ability of nations to fund public services, healthcare, and climate action.
We cannot build a fair global economy when the wealthiest nation on earth acts as a shield for corporate greed. We need international solidarity that puts workers and communities ahead of billionaire shareholders.

For years, Christmas Island’s iconic red crabs were pushed to the brink as invasive yellow crazy ants spread across the rainforest. What was once a living, moving forest floor became a silent battlefield, with billions of ants overwhelming native species and collapsing entire ecosystems. Conservation teams tried everything: poison baits, traps, physical barriers. Nothing worked.
Then came an unexpected solution. Scientists introduced microscopic parasitic wasps that targeted the ants’ hidden food source, cutting off their power at its root. Slowly, the ants declined. The forest breathed again. The red crabs returned.
What followed became one of the most dramatic ecological recoveries ever recorded. A reminder that smart science, patience, and working with nature, not against it, can reverse even island-wide environmental collapse.

China has planted billions of trees in its ambitious reforestation projects. But there's an unexpected, widespread consequence.
New research shows that all that new vegetation is using massive amounts of groundwater. This is now pulling water away from agricultural regions and population centers, changing the entire country's water distribution.
It's a powerful lesson in the complex, interconnected nature of ecosystems. Massive interventions, even with the best intentions, create cascading effects.
We can't simply "plant our way" out of environmental crises. True ecological restoration requires a systems approach, working with natural processes, not just adding trees.

Shocking to read that Tassal has had a major fish-kill at its barramundi farm in the remote Buccaneer Archipelago/Cone Bay region of WA while simultaneously pushing ahead with plans to ramp up production.

The booming NSW blueberry industry has a very dark underside. Behind the glossy fruit in supermarkets are stories of withheld passports, visa loopholes, overcrowded and unsafe housing, and wages far below the legal minimum.
This isn’t an accident — it’s a system designed to squeeze vulnerable workers while corporations and farm owners profit. NSW still refuses to licence labour hire companies, a reform other states like Queensland have already adopted. Without it, dodgy labour contractors flourish and exploitation continues unchecked.
The government looks the other way because cheap labour means cheap exports, but the cost is paid by workers living in conditions that border on modern slavery.
If we can regulate unions, if we can regulate welfare recipients, then we can certainly regulate big agriculture and labour hire firms. Protecting workers’ rights should never come second to the profits of agribusiness.

In both teens and older adults, nature felt non-judgmental, easing self-acceptance and sparking personal growth, agency, and belonging—not just to people, but to all living things. It’s not simply a mood boost—it helps shape who you are.

This feels deeply wrong. The world’s first commercial octopus farm, planned in Spain’s Canary Islands, has sparked global outrage—and rightly so. These extraordinary animals are intelligent, curious, and sentient, yet destined here for a cruel fate.
Octopuses rival dogs in cognitive capacity, with arms that can solve problems independently. And yet documents reveal plans to kill them via ice slurry—condemned by scientists as agonisingly cruel. Over 100 experts have spoken out against it.
Beyond ethics, the environmental impact is dire. Octopuses are carnivorous; farming them requires huge amounts of wild-caught fish, fuelling overfishing. Stocking solitary animals together risks stress, aggression, and cannibalism.
This isn’t innovation—it’s exploitation. Washington State has already banned octopus farming, and similar bans are gaining momentum. Lawmakers, scientists, and activists are uniting to say: some lines must not be crossed.
We face a choice: profit or compassion. Octopuses remind us that sentience comes in many forms. The question is whether we will respect it—or industrialise it.

Melbourne: A rare house price oasis in Australia’s overheated property market.
While most capitals are pricing out first home buyers, Melbourne is quietly becoming more accessible — thanks in large part to Victoria’s investor-targeted tax regime.
No praise, of course, is given to the state government for:
• The Vacant Residential Land Tax (discouraging empty homes)
• Higher land tax rates on investment properties
• The windfall gains tax on rezoned land
These measures have cooled investor demand and helped keep prices within reach of everyday buyers. Other states take note.

Privatising healthcare is a dangerous path—look at the US, where basic medicines like asthma inhalers cost 10-40x more than here. In Australia, we pay as little as $7.30 for life-saving meds thanks to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). In the US? Over $500 without insurance.
When healthcare becomes profit-driven:
* Prices skyrocket
* Accessibility plummets
* Health becomes a privilege, not a right

Is Australia’s middle class falling behind? With inflation and skyrocketing house prices, financial stability feels out of reach for many Australians. Even households with six-figure incomes are struggling to pay rent or mortgages, let alone afford any luxuries. Some are postponing retirement or taking on extra work just to make ends meet.

Australia had the potential to be an export powerhouse, the richest country in the world—full stop. We have everything we need. But instead, we're facing the greatest erosion of wealth in the developed world, with a cost-of-living crisis like no other. We've practically given our resources away, and now, someone else is reaping the benefits.

A massive 7-metre red banner has been put up to block prized views of #Sydney Harbour after nearly 300 trees were illegally cut down. Councils across NSW are cracking down on this destructive practice, labelling it "the worst act of environmental vandalism."

I completely agree with you. #WhatsApp's ties to #Facebook and its questionable data privacy practices are major red flags. #Signal, on the other hand, is built specifically for #privacy and #security, with end-to-end #encryption and no #dataharvesting. It's the better choice for anyone serious about keeping their communications private. Joining a WhatsApp group just isn't worth compromising your privacy.

A new Aussie study reveals why a magnesium-rich diet is vital for our health, lowering the risk of DNA damage and chronic diseases. Researchers from the University of South Australia found a strong link between low magnesium and high levels of the genotoxic amino acid homocysteine, which can increase susceptibility to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, various cancers, and diabetes. #Health #Magnesium #AussieResearch #DNAProtection #ChronicDiseasePrevention #UniSA

I was educated in the 70s and 80s in Australia, and all education was free for me, including university. Back then, there were private schools, but the majority of Australians attended public schools. The focus was on equal access to quality education for everyone, regardless of their background. It’s disheartening to see how much has changed, with growing inequality in our education system today.#AustraliaEducation #PublicEducation #FreeEducation #EqualAccess #ChangingTimes

In Australia, we've unfortunately copied much of the American blueprint when it comes to education. Our private schools are now better funded by the federal government by a factor of three to one compared to public schools. This has created a widening gap in access to quality education, where private schools thrive while public schools struggle with underfunding. If all students, regardless of their background, attended the same schools, we'd see a fairer distribution of resources and opportunities, preventing the deepening divide that exists today.

Finland's education system stands out as the best in the world because it prioritises equality and excellence for all students. With no private schools allowed, every child has access to the same high-quality education, ensuring that wealth doesn't determine success. Finland's focus on teacher autonomy, holistic learning, and a balanced approach to academics fosters creativity and critical thinking, making it a global leader in education.
