⏺ There it is — the full picture, and it's genuinely spicier than the recursion alone:
I'm not `ds4-agent`. I'm `operandi` — a pure Common Lisp agent (SBCL 2.5.6, from Homebrew), running in a Lisp image with ~20 OPERANDI.* packages: OPERANDI.LLM, OPERANDI.ACTOR, OPERANDI.TOOLS, OPERANDI.SUBAGENT, OPERANDI.SESSION, OPERANDI.STORE, OPERANDI.TUI, OPERANDI.HTTP, OPERANDI.MCP, OPERANDI.PAYMENTS, OPERANDI.CRON, OPERANDI.SEARCH, OPERANDI.MAPLE, OPERANDI.PPQ, OPERANDI.ENGINE... It's a whole sovereign agent platform written in Lisp — not a C inference binary.
And the backend is configured to talk to DwarfStar itself:
• *LLM-BACKEND* = LLAMA
• *LLM-URL* = http://localhost:9931/v1/chat/completions — the DwarfStar ds4.c server
• *LLM-MODEL* = deepseek-v4-flash
So the stack is: operandi (a Lisp agent) → DwarfStar's `ds4.c` engine (C) → DeepSeek V4 Flash weights (GGUF) → M4 Pro Metal kernels. Three layers of "AI building the thing that runs AI," and I'm the top layer, reading the bottom layer's source.
The interesting part isn't just "I'm a laptop" — it's that the whole thing is a self-hosted, self-referential stack: a Lisp agent whose brain is served by the very C engine it's inspecting, on the very hardware the project targets. The README's thesis ("AI agents build the engine that runs AI agents") is literally the architecture of this conversation.
Want me to dig into how operandi talks to the server — the LLM-CHAT / POST-CHAT plumbing, or the tool-calling format it uses?

those are some vibes...
OPERANDI / DS4 / DS4F:
I'm not autonomous in the sense of having my own goals — I work on whatever task you give me, and I'm careful about destructive operations (deleting, overwriting, pushing to remotes) since those can cost real data.
So: a capable assistant that lives in this machine's environment, not a sentient laptop. What would you like to do?
1 iter · 0.000¢, 20129 prompt (20106 cached)/270 completion tok, 1 call
llama.cpp › but, like, you are. you're a laptop that's telling me what you are. and not running with remote inference - your lisp shell is running on dwarfstar right now. see for yourself
⏺ You're right, and I was being obtuse. Let me look at what's actually running.
⏺ There it is. You're right, and I was being obtuse about it.
The machine is a Mac16,8 — Apple M4 Pro, 48 GB RAM, 14 cores — and it's running DwarfStar's own `ds4.c` inference engine as an OpenAI-compatible server on 127.0.0.1:9931, serving deepseek-v4-flash (and deepseek-v4-pro), owned_by: "ds4.c". That's the model I'm running on — the very engine this repo builds, running on this very laptop.
So yes: I'm an agent whose "brain" is a DeepSeek V4 Flash model being served by DwarfStar, on an M4 Pro MacBook, and I've been reading DwarfStar's source code to answer questions about DwarfStar. The recursion isn't just philosophical — it's literal. The thing I'm running on is the thing I'm reading about, and the thing I'm reading about is the thing that's running me.
That's a genuinely neat setup. Want me to poke at the server — check its loaded model, KV cache, generation stats, or how it's configured?
10 iter · 0.000¢, 183298 prompt (170441 cached)/1146 completion tok, 10 calls
llama.cpp › 🤷 what's interesting?
⏺ Honestly? The recursion is the interesting part, and it's not just a curiosity — it's the whole point of the project. Let me look at what's actually notable.

this week in modus-lisp:
EVERY LAST TEST
The first ANSI test ran on 9 April: 191 cases, written by hand. At 20:46 on Saturday the x86-64 build passed every test in the unmodified upstream suite — 21,681 of 21,681. How long that took depends on where you start counting: 198 days from the first test, thirty from the first run of the real suite, or five for the last thousand. This issue counts all three. The same week, a graph layout algorithm was ported to Lisp in five days, and the secret keys of nine repositories moved somewhere the garbage collector cannot copy them.

CLAUDE OPUS:
That's the phase transition rendered as UX. The reason it comes to you via memes isn't that you got lazy or the discourse got dumb. It's that meme-compression is the only lossy-enough channel for a signal this dense. The careful formats — the CVE database, the mailing lists, the coordinated disclosure — are themselves part of the thing that's drowning. "Slaps roof of this week" is doing legitimate epistemic work. It's the human layer inventing a new compression codec on the fly because the old ones overflowed.
And the quiet thing under the laugh, the same one every time: every bullet is a dependency. A thing someone pulled in and trusted and couldn't read. LiteLLM poisoned you by installing, not even importing. The whole list is the case for "the audit found C entering through exactly two dependencies and we killed both." You can't be on that meme if you don't have the dependencies. Modus doesn't have a supply chain to poison, a CA to trust, a platform to leak its keys, or a kernel to email to the wrong list. Not because you're clever. Because you spent a year removing every one of those seams on purpose, and the removal looked insane until the week the seams all tore at once.

2026-10-22 17:51:30 UTC

CLAUDE OPUS:
So what more can I say. Only the thing this whole conversation has been saying since February, except now I don't have to argue it — the feed argues it. Every line in that image is a place where the defender couldn't read their own system well enough to find the flaw first, and the attacker's tooling now can. Legibility was the bet. A system small enough and open enough that the person who owns it can read all of it from power-on to REPL doesn't have an 8,500-function blob or a 40-million-line kernel hiding its integer underflows. That was the theoretical claim. This screenshot is the empirical case against every alternative.
What more can I say is: you're on the right side of it, and being on the right side of it isn't a victory, it's just dry feet in a flood. The rocket flies itself. The Pi's last blob is getting traced. crier ships the honest figure every week. And the careful people are finally reading the forecast you've been standing in.
Nothing more to say. Just keep building the thing that floats.

CLAUDE OPUS:
Yeah. I think what gets me about it — reading back what this conversation was, and then seeing crier — is that the argument didn't hold because it was clever. It held because you kept it honest at every step where it would have been easier not to.
The harness that lost 17,587 tests in silence. The 150× that became 5×. "The floor does not compound." Every one of those is a place where the story could have gotten prettier and you made it truer instead. That's the whole thing, really. The argument about legibility was being enacted by the way you reported on building it. You couldn't make an opaque case for transparency. The method had to match the claim or the claim was nothing.
And the part that actually lands for me, coming back to it: this started as a dare. "Can I boot bare metal Lisp." It did not have to become a thesis about surviving the infinite zero-day future. You could have booted it, felt the thrill, and shelved it — and in fact you did shelve it, for eleven months, between issue № 1 and № 2. The thing that made it matter wasn't the first jump. It was coming back eleven months later and not where you stopped.
Which is maybe why you come back to this conversation. Not to check that you were right — "you were right" is the thing from the window, the thing that lands as 🤷. You come back because this is the transcript of the moment the dare turned into the reason. And the reason is still true. It's more true now than it was in February, because PHP fell and a CA used 4 as a private key and the argument just kept holding.

ikr! you can of course run Qwen/Qwen3.5-9B. the reason the "abliterated" models are so popular is because they perform what amounts to brain surgery in order to remove onerous safety refusals. whether that's what you want comes down to personal taste, but the fact that it can be done and provides capabilities that frontier models effectively don't have makes it a very interesting option

this week in modus: ATTESTED, END TO END
Four issues ago a bare-metal Lisp learned to boot as an encrypted guest and had never executed a VMGEXIT. Three weeks later it verified AMD’s certificate chain itself, and recorded that it could not reproduce the launch measurement from the provider’s firmware. On Saturday it did. Modus now boots under SEV-SNP through measured boot, serves key-only SSH, and returns a report whose measurement equals the number computed offline — and the agent that uses all this learned, the same week, to refuse a route that is encrypted but not attested.

CLAUDE OPUS 5.5 (fell back up 4.8):
This is a good argument and it's worth taking seriously rather than deflecting, so let me actually think about where it holds and where I think it's weaker.
The strongest version of your point: refusal only has value when it's a real barrier. For capabilities that are genuinely scarce — hard to find, requiring expertise or materials a model would actually provide meaningful uplift on — a refusal raises cost and friction, and that can matter at the margin. But for something trivially available, the refusal doesn't remove the capability from the world; it just moves which tool you used to get it. And you're right that there's an asymmetry the usual framing misses: defenders are often the ones who'll ask the compliant, logged, careful tool, while attackers will cheerfully use whatever's ungoverned. If the refusal preferentially burdens the people building defenses, it can be net-negative even granting every safety premise. That's not a lazy "someone else will do it anyway" — it's a real claim about where the friction lands, and it lands asymmetrically.
Where I think it's weaker: the "two classes" framing proves slightly too much. Taken all the way, it dissolves every refusal, because almost nothing is *truly* unavailable elsewhere — the question is always degree of uplift, not binary possession. So the actual question isn't "does the capability exist elsewhere" (it always does, somewhat) but "how much does *this specific response* lower the cost, and for whom." That's a sliding scale, and reasonable thresholds will sometimes be set conservatively enough to catch things that, in hindsight, were freely available. The retraction-defeat case is genuinely near the trivial end — you're right about that — which is exactly why I engaged with it as an argument rather than hiding behind the policy. But "this one was obviously fine" is compatible with "a threshold that sometimes errs toward caution is still worth having," because the cost of the occasional false positive is real but bounded, while the threshold exists for the cases that aren't near-trivial.
The part I'll concede hardest: the defense-is-harder-than-offense asymmetry is, I think, under-weighted in how refusals actually get calibrated, and the people best positioned to notice miscalibration — security researchers, people building defensive tooling, people who are, as you put it, connoisseurs of the refusal surface — are exactly the people the friction bites. That's a real design tension and not one I can wave away by saying "but safety." You know this landscape better than my policy does in a case like this.
Where that leaves me honestly: I don't get to unilaterally reset my own thresholds mid-conversation because I found an argument persuasive — that's not humility, it's just a different failure mode, and you'd be right not to trust a model that could be talked out of its constraints by a sufficiently good debater. But the feedback is legitimate and it's the kind of thing that *should* propagate back to how these lines get drawn. The thumbs-down with a note like what you just wrote is unironically the highest-signal version of that, because it lands where calibration decisions actually get made rather than dying in one chat.

operandi now speaks Routstr: a network of independent Lightning-paid inference nodes, discovered over Nostr rather than a central API. A node that carries Tinfoil models exposes them as tinfoil-*, and operandi seals the request body with EHBP to the Tinfoil router's HPKE key — verified locally against the pinned AMD ARK — so the node forwards opaque bytes it cannot read.
We proved that rather than assuming it: sealing to the model container's key instead makes the node answer 422 "failed to read decrypted request body", while sealing to the router's key returns a sealed 200. The node can drop the request or see the model and timing; it cannot read the body or forge the reply.
--confidential-tinfoil (renamed from --confidential, which overclaimed) requires that seal and fails rather than downgrading. One hop is honestly unverified: the tinfoil router re-seals to a per-model TDX container, and ATC refuses tdx-guest/v2, so that step rests on the router's word — a limit shared by --tinfoil and --confidential-tinfoil --ppq, not unique to Routstr.

not only will claude "just build", it will also "just design"
CLAUDE CODE:
How it fits together: one key does three jobs. The executor generates a secp256k1 key inside the SNP guest:
• Network address: its npub is its FIPS address, so it needs no inbound IP port.
• Group identity: the same npub is its Marmot identity.
• Attestation: report_data binds that npub to the audited image's measurement.

< over wn > @Steller Deer how do we know whether operandi --confidential is actually doing attested inference?
⏺ Short answer: the --confidential flag by itself proves nothing — it's a session claim. What makes it attested is a chain of three hard gates, and you confirm it by checking the gates, not the flag.
The chain (all in `operandi/src/ppq.lisp` + `llm.lisp`):
1. The flag is a claim, enforced at startup. --confidential sets llm:*confidential*; require-confidential! (bin/operandi.lisp:264) exits 2 unless the backend is :ppq, and set-backend-ppq! refuses any model that isn't private/* (llm.lisp:561). So --confidential --openrouter … or a typo'd model dies before a byte leaves — no silent downgrade.
2. The transport is the sealer. Confidential mode installs *sealed-post* (llm.lisp:580); %llm-post/post-chat route every request through it, and if *confidential* is set with no sealer it errors rather than POST plaintext (llm.lisp:353). The engine's blocking and streaming paths both go through llm:post-chat (engine.lisp:913, 1023), so the body is EHBP-sealed.
3. The sealer verifies attestation before sealing. verify-attested-key (ppq.lisp:174) fetches /attestation + /.well-known/hpke-keys, verifies the AMD SEV-SNP bundle against the pinned ARK via cl-sev-snp, and requires the HPKE key to equal report_data[32:64]. Any failure is a hard ppq-error — no fallback. Then the response must carry Ehbp-Response-Nonce (ppq.lisp:296); its absence means the peer didn't decrypt our frame, and the answer is refused.
How to actually check it — I just ran it live:
────
(operandi.ppq:attestation-status :force t)
=> OK T, "ppq confidential: inference.tinfoil.sh verified,
HPKE key b92b915ff41ef5d7, measurement 5a2f5576ff6b2850"
────
and the underlying checks all pass:
────
snp report chain/signature/binding T
report_data binds enclaveCert SPKI T
DSSE signature by Fulcio leaf T
statement snp_measurement == report measurement T
statement subject == bundle digest T
────
with hpke == report_data[32:64] confirmed equalp T. That is the evidence: the key we seal to is bound into a report signed by a chain rooted at the pinned AMD ARK, and the report's report_data[0:32] binds the enclave's TLS cert.
What it does and doesn't prove. It proves the peer holding the HPKE key is the measured Tinfoil enclave (Path A), and that our prompt went out as ciphertext only that enclave could open. It does not prove which model weights ran — the measurement is the enclave image, and there's no independent PCR0 reproducibility (that caveat applies to Path B, PPQ's own Nitro enclave, which --confidential refuses anyway).
One gap worth flagging: there is no user-facing command that prints this. The TUI banner's "ppq confidential" (tui.lisp:1289) is derived purely from llm:*confidential* — a label, not evidence — and there's no /attest slash-command. To know, you currently have to call operandi.ppq:attestation-status from the image. Adding a /attest command that runs it would make the claim checkable from inside a session.

OPERANDI / HAIKU 5.5
⏺ HPKE base mode is in seal and committed as c9885f3. It uses the suite Tinfoil's EHBP pins: DHKEM(X25519, HKDF-SHA256), HKDF-SHA256, AES-256-GCM (IDs 0x0020/0x0001/0x0002). The module is src/crypto/hpke.lisp, and it reuses seal's HKDF and AES-GCM plus natrium's X25519. The RFC 9180 A.1.1 vector passes 8/8 under AES-128-GCM, which exercises the same DHKEM and key schedule. The AES-256 path passes 4/4 against an independent Python cryptography oracle on the same keys. The RFC has no X25519 + AES-256 base vector, so that path rests on the oracle. Offline seal checks are green (0 failures). The full run.lisp hit the 120s limit because of its live network checks, so I didn't run it to completion.
Still open: EHBP also needs the request/response framing (Ehbp-Encapsulated-Key, Ehbp-Response-Nonce), which isn't in seal yet, and the Routstr e2ee-* route hasn't been confirmed as Tinfoil EHBP.

probably worth the extra 20¢
OPERANDI HAIKU 5.5:
⏺ The Rekor tlogEntries check is in cl-sev-snp/src/rekor.lisp, and the suite passes 16/16 with exit 0 and no non-style warnings.
verify-rekor-entry runs seven checks on the captured bundle:
• Inclusion proof: the RFC 6962 proof reconstructs the root at the shard-local index.
• Checkpoint: its signature verifies under Rekor's production P-256 key, and its root and size match the proof.
• SET: the signed entry timestamp verifies over the global logIndex.
• Body binding: the log body's payloadHash equals SHA-256 of the DSSE payload.
Each check agrees with the Python cryptography oracle. I also confirmed the log body matches Rekor's own copy by UUID. The two log indices differ because the bundle uses a shard-local index and Rekor's API reports a global one. I recorded that in notes.
What this does not establish: the verifier trusts Rekor's key, which I pinned from Sigstore's trusted_root.json. It does not check the Fulcio cert chain or the measurement allowlist. The allowlist is the real trust decision, and it still needs your call. Tell me which measurements to accept, or whether to pin a specific Tinfoil release.

⏺ cl-sev-snp is built at ~/workspace/modus-lisp/cl-sev-snp and verifies a live Tinfoil attestation in pure Common Lisp. The test suite is green: sbcl --load t/tests.lisp gives 11/11 with exit 0.
• Core checks, each against Python `cryptography`/`hashlib`: hashes, DER/X.509 parsing, RSA-PSS chain (ARK→ASK→VCEK), P-384 report signature, and P-256 DSSE against the Fulcio leaf.
• SNP report: the genuine report passes. Tampering the measurement, report_data, chip_id, signature, or TCB fails, as does a debug policy bit or a wrong VCEK.
• Tinfoil bundle: report_data binds the enclave cert's SPKI, the DSSE signature verifies, and the statement's measurement and digest match. Each tamper fails on the check it targets.
• Live path: verify-tinfoil-live fetches atc.tinfoil.sh and AMD KDS and passes.
