You get 15GB of common packages in the sets, extra shit you can get from 3rd-party repos or from Slackbuilds. It's an actually useful base system, it's got compilers and common tools, libraries and docs all on the install disk. Debian and Gentoo don't even fucking install *man pages* by default: you have to get everything from the repos. So dependencies aren't a distro issue, you aren't pulling in 500 packages for a little tool on a fresh install because all your system knows how to do is boot.

It fits on a DVD. Full install is about 15GB uncompressed.

That's a feature.
All of the libraries you're going to need are on the install disk, so it doesn't matter in practice. No dependency hell either, packages are just tarballs and rolling them back is easy. Sbopkg can also fetch dependency trees and queue builds for you.

Isn't that where poast is hoasted? I know @p@fsebugoutzone.org runs FediList on one of their boxes but I'm not clear on what their relation to fedi is. Last time I checked they were out of VPSes so if they're back with a better deal I might seriously consider it when FBE enters Phase 2, as it is right now I've still got >1 year worth of credit with Vultr so I'm sticking with them till then.

2026-02-18 22:00:34 UTC

:nonfree::drinkfluoride::dancing_f::dancing_b::dancing_e::heymateyougottaloicense::drinkin:
This probably isn't of much interest to anyone outside FBE, but it's an entertaining anecdote of the kind of stuff a would-be instance owner has to deal with.
So the other day I got a rude awakening when I checked my email and saw an abuse report from Vultr, the hosting provider FBE uses. Now the way they'd worded the email that went to me made it sound like it was coming from Vultr themselves: "Our automated detection system has identified activity on your account" blah blah blah, so I immediately started thinking worst-case scenario that they want to get the instance canned cause they aren't a fan of some of the admittedly top-notch content that's coming from their box. Who knew?
So I log into Vultr, look at the abuse report, and it's actually coming from somewhere else: someone manually reported FBE to Vultr themselves. Still in the same frame of mind, I just need to do whatever to keep Vultr happy: Best-case scenario I'll delete the bad posts, Vultr looks and sees they're gone and they tell me to have a nice day and fuck off. So I do that, drag @sampler (the other admin, and the guy who's bankrolled this instance since its inception) and @MK2boogaloo (the guy who made these problematic posts to begin with, keep up the good work) into a war-room DM and let them know what's going on inside my head, I tell Kero to lay low and be prepared to pack his bags (in my head I'm still not sure what they want, if they'll want him out of here or what, so I figure it's best to make it look like he's not doing anything.) until the situation's been resolved, so he goes to post over at FSE for a bit.
It's not until a few hours later that I decide to dig a bit deeper into the nature of that abuse report. The only obvious thread I can pull as to its origin is the name it's signed with, not guaranteed to lead me anywhere but I give it a tug. That leads me to this post, from the same guy:
https://toot.community/@mijndert/116080995229269674
So this guy, instead of being reasonable and blocking instances he doesn't like (or even more so and just blocking Kero, the "full of people" he speaks of is only really comprised of him), decides to take it upon himself and complain to my hosting provider. He says he sent one to Namecheap too, but I haven't heard anything from them, and I figure they have a finer screening process for abuse reports anyway: it's not against US law to host content that someone from the Netherlands doesn't like (it's always like the Netherlands or Germany with these guys, what's up with that anyway? Must be something in the water over there).
Not only that, but he points out his interest to "dox the ever living shit out of them". Hilarious. Having thrown any good faith he might have had out the window, I let Vultr know about it and tell them I won't be responding to any follow-up requests. With a lid still under all of this, I wait and see what Vultr has to say.
And this morning Vultr gets back to me, thanking me for cooperating, ticket's closed. Well that's simple, best-case scenario.
So now that the situation's been resolved I don't think I have much to say other than even if you yourself don't cause problems, other people will do it for you. Lessons in running an instance. Now it's partially my fault for not having the foresight to predict something like this happening, but since causing me problems is pretty much the only breakable rule around here, why I shouldn't be able to export my rules onto someone else if he wants to do the same for me? I don't have an axe to grind against this guy (I'd prefer if he just blocked FBE and left me alone), but I don't think he should get to complain when he pulls stunts like this against people who do. The irony is that if he just left his name out on the report I might've not ended up with more (admittedly, public) information on the guy who wants to "dox the ever living shit out of" me than he does on myself.
I hope this was the slightest bit educational or at least entertaining for everyone involved. If there's anything that needs to be said for the other side of the story I'm open to discussing it like adults, but it's not my problem if this gets to mijndert so I'm not going to tag him. If he was smart he would've blocked us by now. :strangelovesmug:

I think instance mutes are the better option but I'm not running a single user instance either. My only gripe is that muting whole instances can cut whole sections of threads from view, so I don't really do it unless a particularly bad instance. Poast is far from the worst behaved ones, a lot of annoying guys come from there but there's a few I don't mind. Some adjacent instances (you know who) are just complete fed shit where I've never seen a post coming from there that's worth reading.

Because I don't want to do a legal thing, I want the furthest thing from a legal thing possible without any scruples. I think making courtesy a legality is stupid and controlling.
> Yes, it is mostly performative but who the fuck cares? Why so adversive to performative things?
I care because I don't. Being performative wastes energy, it adds negative value to things that are worthwhile, like sharing information.
Something performative I did a while ago was draft up a license that makes fun of this issue: the joke is taking it seriously, I really doubt it would hold up in court.

GOATSE PUBLIC LICENSE
Perversion 0.604753, December 2023
Copyright (C) 2023 Gikopoi Intl. Superstructure
This document is made available under the terms of
the Goatse Public License, perversion 0.604753, or
(at your option) any later perversion.
Prelapse
The licenses for most software are designed to take away your freedom to
expose it to as many people as you can. By constrast, the Goatse Public
License is intended to guarantee your freedom to expose -- by guaranteeing
your freedom to include Goatse within free exhibitionist software. This
Public License applies not only to Gikopoi, but also to the license itself
by virtue of happening to be an executable program. (Try it for yourself!)
When we speak of free exihbitionist software, we are referring to freedom
to expose, not price. This Public License is designed not only to make sure
you have the freedom to expose as many people to Goatse as possible, but to
also allow you to freely express your thoughts about humorous and surreal
images through the distribution of copies of exhibitionist software.
To protect your rights, we need to make restrictions that forbid anyone to
deny you these rights or ask you to surrender them. These restrictions may
burden you if you distribute or modify copies of the software.
For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or
for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that you have. You
must make sure that they, too recieve or can get a copy of Goatse. And you
must show them these demands so they know their rights.
Also, for each author's protection and ours, we want to make it clear that
everyone understands that there is no warranty for this software. If the
software is modified by someone else and passed on, we want its recipients
to know that what they have is a copy of Goatse, and any problems brought
on by this will not reflect on the original authors' reputations.
Finally, any free exhibitionist program is threatened constantly by those
with influence over what you're exposed to. To prevent this, we make it
clear any patent must be licensed through my anus or not licensed at all.
The shockingly precise terms for duplication, distribution and dissolution
follow.

DESIRES AND DEMANDS FOR DUPLICATION, DISTRIBUTION AND DISSOLUTION

of the aformentioned image.
If in the event the inclusion of said image data is undesirable -- the following

terms are preserved within any subsequent licensing of the software or published

> Don't blame the license for turning it into a legal thing. Even CC0 is a legal dance.
I am doing it, cause in legalese it says that it forces you to do something, while CC0 is just the equivalent of saying "do what you want" for people who live in ass-backwards places without a concept of public domain. I'd just as soon throw the legal stuff in the trash, but it's a courtesy for those aformentioned people, and I don't have to think about it afterward: no one from bumfucktown is gonna try and force their broken laws on me, nor does anyone have to care if someone wrote my name on something.

> Like for example having to retain the original copyright notice is alright because it at least gives credit to the original author.
That's what I mean by performative, it's fine to give credit but it turns it from a courtesy into a legal song and dance, for something that makes no actual difference. Oh it's my legal duty to attach a notice to this 10 line shell script, like who cares? I'd rather just have nothing on it, but that's my preference.

I support GPL but I think if you have a good reason to make something permissive you should just make it public domain/cc0, anything else is just performative
