@nprofile…fkq2 predictable anti-PHP snark coming out here while ignoring the fact that the biggest public service websites (Wikipedia, Internet Archive, etc) are PHP and do more good than virtually anything else on the internet.
It looks like a fantastic role.

@nprofile…gqp6 unfortunately I can't in the current climate. It's simply not conducive to long-term employment. Maybe I need a burner blog.

@nprofile…nz9s yeah, this is essentially the point of my evaluations. These are not knowledge tools that have been organically adopted by the community in a way that things like StackOverflow, blogs, static analysis, linters, etc were. At no point in the history of software did a bad tool imposed on teams by management lead to long term success. People like myself have to tread carefully though and frame these facts around lost hours, pissed-off customers and lost revenue. Even then it's an uphill battle right now and one prone to risk for anyone who puts their head above the parapet.

It's got to the point where I can't even recommend these tools for simple jobs. The amount of technical debt these things are going to generate is beyond comprehension. They throw away decades of software and professional standards.

As part of my job, I have to evaluate AI tools. Part of that evaluation is pushing them to their limit. Today, I realised Cursor has a setting where if you critique its work enough, it goes silent and refuses to apply changes.
It's a moody junior dev whose overconfidence and bravado quickly turn to surly silence when their work is questioned. The happy, helpful (and frequently wrong) AI is gone, replaced by a useless one with a bad attitude that won't make it past the next performance review.
Christ. I'm used to managing engineers, but I draw the line at managing AIs.

Why on earth is my kids limited YouTube time tonight getting hammered by Clive Palmer ads? At this point I will vote for anyone that brings federal election spam laws online with everyone else. You're not allowed to advertise alcohol or cigarettes, so why Clive Palmer?

@nprofile…2ye5 yeah, this probably more about the high cost of TFL cards. I used to spend 15% of my salary when I was starting out on my card (zones 1-6). Doesn't sound like it's got any better.

@nprofile…x759 I was thinking about this recently. It would be so nice to have some kind of portable encrypted auth package that you could host yourself or upload to a centralised provider that was your way of interacting with the internet without using Google or MS Oauth. I have no idea where you'd begin with something like this though.

While everyone is donating to Wikipedia to spite Musk, it's probably a good time to remind people he hates unions too.

@nprofile…x759 nice write up. I think my next laptop is going to be an X1. I've used XPSs for the past decade but I'm not a fan of the new keyboard so time to give something else a go.
