Remember applying for a job, getting hired, being really excited, then getting bummed out that you had to show up? The new job was going to solve all these problems but also created others. The issue is not that there would be things they didn’t like. The problem is they weren’t emotionally prepared to deal with the unmet expectations they didn’t know they had. They’ve been dreaming so long and weren’t prepared for reality.

These are the data the app needs. And it accepts the inputs below which I imagine are something like an air rifle. I don’t know if there are much in the way of supersonic air rifles. I’m messing around with Applied Ballistics’ AB Quantum app. It’s a little overwhelming at first but I found applying it to a real world problem was helpful in getting more comfortable. I’ve not paid for anything yet (ever? I’m pretty happy with the features so far). First feature I like is the reticle database. I’m comparing the holds of 100 yard and 300 yard zeros. Notice how the 300 yard zero brings the the 300 and 400 yard holds closer to the horizontal crosshair? The makes holding for wind easier and more precise.

VV is available (as much as any powders are available) pretty much anywhere. For the price check I went to Midway. VV is Finnish and a part of the Nammo group that includes Lapua and Berger. Flow is lately determined by granule shape and will vary with burn rate and composition. N555 has a uniform, squat, square cylinder shape that meters very consistently with my Lee Perfect powder measure. It uses wipers. I’ve been throwing charges well within half a grain.

2024-12-03 19:48:05 UTC

This post is about VihtaVuori N555 but first, It’s odd to inadvertently find yourself as the top contributor to #reloading and #handloading. I hope I get other folks stoked on what they are doing to share their own progress and projects. What are y’all up to? What’s working? What’s cool? What sucks?
Ok. N555. My experience is still pretty limited but what I have so far, I like. I have had strings with extreme spreads (ES) in muzzle velocity (MV) of 5 feet per second! They were only 5 round strings during powder-charge testing but I’ve never had anything that low before. The load I’m using I have a 9-round string with 27.5 ES and 9.8 standard deviation (SD). That’s using an unremarkable, uncalibrated, beam balance. It’s not amazing but it’s plenty good for what I need. I’m hoping this next batch will be a little more consistent since I’m resizing the brass to be less loose in the chamber. I’m still full length sizing but I’m bumping shoulders back about 0.002” less than I did the last round. This could improve ignition consistency and I’m told by people with significant experience and impressive results that ignition consistency has a big impact on SDs and group size.
Back to N555.
The story is VihtaVuori developed N555 specifically for the 6.5 Creedmoor, what I’m shooting, and I’ve seen it picked up by multiple competitive (i.e. they often win) F-class shooters. What appealed to me about N555 mainly was its reputation for temperature insensitivity. I’m developing the load in moderate temperatures but expect to be using it in temps from 10-15° F. I don’t know how much that would impact a powder like IMR 4064 but I don’t want doubts running through my head while I’m taking a shot. I actually need the meat I’m hunting for.
VV says N555 has anti-fouling ingredients. I’ve not really pressed this with a high round count but the cleanup I’ve done after a range session has been noticeably faster than any of the previous loads I’ve used, both factory and my own.
Historically VihtaVuori powders have been a little more expensive and I was going to list cost as a downside but I just priced N555 against IMR 4064 and Reloader 16 and N555 is meaningfully less expensive!
The weird and unexpected thing about N555 is the cloud of smoke it produces. It’s definitely less than blackpowder but an old-timer at the range was wondering if it might be.
So, I’m very happy with N555 so far. I plan on buying it in 8 pound jugs. Not only do I save about 10% but that’s over 1,200 rounds from one lot number so I’m not wasting components and time verifying the safety and precision of a new lot of powder.
Do you have experience with N555 or other good powders for 6.5 Creedmoor?

Happy Sunday!!
I want to catch up with what I’ve been doing. I’ve been out to the range twice now! Not very much but when you have a real life and aren’t a gun toober you take what you can get and I’m stoked.
The first series are my load work ups (at 100 yards) for powder. I took it right to the max load of 41.7 of N555. The listed max MV (what I see as the true pressure indicator) is 2664 feet per second (FPS) and as you can see, I was getting about 2550 FPS. Tikkas are known for having slower barrels. I thought about chasing that extra velocity, but when I did the math, it didn’t get me very much difference in trajectory. I decided to stick with the max load at a safe velocity and that’s what you see in the last target with eight shots at 200 yards.
You can see the eight shot group is quite a bit wider than the same load at 100 yards. This isn’t just because it’s farther away, but also the barrel is light and as it heats up it begins pointing in different directions. I’m extremely happy with these results!
So what are you all up to? I can’t wait to hear from the other shooters what projects they’re working on.

Alright! Back at the bench. I’m now working up my final hunting load. I landed on VV N555 for powder (running a 6.5 creed) and Hornady ELD-X 143gr bullets. I know this gun will shoot these bullets well and I’ve seen them get the work done in the field but I have misgivings about them being cup-core bullets and not bonded.
What bonded precision bullets do you think are worth looking at? All I’ve found is Nosler Accubond.
This is powder development. I have just one round for each step working up to velocities I’d be interested in, then 5 rounds in 0.3 grain increments to max load.
I don’t have a great powder scale so I used my phone to remove parallax. I don’t know if it matters but I’m loading for precision (whatever I can get from a factory barrel) and I want to practice the best methods I know.

I’d like a response to the following that argues the United States is not a constitutional republic. I’d like the response to be in the voice of Ernest Hemingway.
The United States is indeed a Democratic Republic. Here’s why:
Constitutional Framework: The U.S. operates under a Constitution that establishes a system of government where power is divided among elected representatives. This framework ensures that the government is bound by laws and principles that protect individual rights1.
Democratic Elements: The U.S. has strong democratic traditions, such as regular elections where citizens vote for their representatives at local, state, and federal levels. This allows the people to have a direct say in who governs them2.
Republican Structure: The U.S. is also a republic because it has a system of representation. Citizens elect representatives who make decisions on their behalf, rather than voting on every issue directly. This system is designed to balance the will of the majority with the protection of minority rights3.
Historical Context: The Founding Fathers intentionally designed the U.S. as a mixed government, incorporating both democratic and republican elements to create a resilient and balanced system4.
In summary, the U.S. combines democratic processes with a republican structure, making it a Democratic Republic. This system ensures both the participation of the people and the rule of law through elected representatives.

Great show! There is another angle about the attempted assassins. Just like the trick has been not being killed by the secret service, if you send in a real hitter, that is the result you get; a professional hit. Sending these nutters in gives deniability if they succeed. The utility of the hit is reduced if they know who to blame.
Not saying this is true, just an angle and obviously these acts/attempted acts of political violence are immoral and horrific.

We need messaging for groups. Does Damus already do this? I’m kind of a knuckle dragger.

Thanks! Nostr.build isn’t connecting but my point wasn’t to ask for help (but I appreciate it!). If we want Nostr to grow, and I do, the information you have there needs to be readily available and people who are used to just tweeting can make the information work. crApple didn’t just market and grow well but they had a product and ecosystem people could access easily. I know these are still early days but that is where we need to get for broad adoption.

When I started I posted regularly with an eye to adding value in hots it would grow. I’m not tech savvy. But it was easy I just followed the prompts and I could share anything. Apparently hosting videos at scale is expensive and I was no longer able to share videos I wanted. I have tried subscribing to paid relays but not only did they not end up allowing me (with my limited tech knowledge) to share video content, they were expensive for a guy like me: casual user. I wouldn’t balk if I were a company. I’m surprised I can’t pay to simply host a video and then pay again to host another.
Nostr will grow from many efforts and one is addressing problems like this so Nostr just works OR resources are available and findable for folks like me to overcome these problems.

Hey @npub1tsg…htk4 , the following are Democrat arguments that the Republican policies listed below are racist. What would the Republican counter-arguments be for each policy if they were to respond in the voice and style of Groucho Marx?
The policies are:
Voter Suppression Laws: Several states with GOP leadership have passed laws that critics argue disproportionately affect minority voters. For instance, Texas has implemented strict voter ID laws, reduced polling locations in minority areas, and purged voter rolls1.
Rhetoric and Campaign Strategies: Some GOP candidates and their supporters have used racially charged rhetoric. For example, former President Donald Trump and other GOP figures have promoted the “Great Replacement Theory,” a conspiracy theory suggesting that nonwhite people are being allowed into the U.S. to replace white voters2.
Immigration Policies: The GOP has often taken a hardline stance on immigration, which has been criticized for its racial undertones. Trump’s comments about immigrants “poisoning the blood of our country” and the party’s general stance on building a border wall are examples2.
Attacks on Political Figures: GOP leaders have sometimes used racially insensitive language when referring to political opponents. For instance, some GOP members have referred to Nikki Haley by her birth name, “Nimarata,” emphasizing her Indian heritage in a derogatory manner.

I’ve been here for a while and wondered what #zapathon was all about. Finally I got the explanation I’ve been looking for.
