I’m taking August off from doing an art challenge, but if you’d like to participate in one, here are some ideas ….
Smaugust - dragon art
Dogust - dog art
If you want a prompt list, Doodlewash has a new one every month: https://doodlewash.com/august-2025-art-challenge/
And Kick in the Creatives has an animal prompt list for August: https://kickinthecreatives.com/31-animals-august/
As always, this is just a suggestion - make any art you want: once a day or only once.
If you’ve made more art by the end of the month by participating in an art challenge than you would have, you win! 🫂💜

#nostrartstrJune2025 - Hot & Cold Hemispheres! 🌎🌏
For June 2025, I wanted to create an art challenge with themes that resonate for nostriches on both halves of the planet.
June 20th is the Summer or Winter solstice, depending where you live.
So for this month, I have a prompt list that can be interpreted as hot 🔥or cold 🧊; there’s two graphics (same prompt list) in case having a temperature-appropriate visual helps you create. 🏝️🗻
There’s also 2 color palettes, and a tracker.
As always, these are just suggestions- make any art you want: once a day or only once.
If you’ve made more art by the end of the month by participating in this art challenge than you would have, you win! 🫂💜
Please use the #nostrartstrJune2025 hashtag so other folks can find your work this month.

One a day is optional. You can set up your own challenge within this theme if you want…. 1 a week, every other day, as many as you can, etc.
Thanks for giving it a try! If you use the #nostrartstrMay2025 hashtag in your notes, it’ll be easier for other folks doing the challenge to find your art. 👍

#nostrartstrMay2025 - Flowers! 💐
For May 2025, I have a color palette (the most popular flower colors), 31 flower prompts, and a two page tracker of flower icons that match the prompt list (which also makes for fun coloring pages)! 🎉
All of those are just suggestions- make any art you want: once a day or only once.
If you’ve made more art by the end of the month by participating in this art challenge than you would have, you win! 🫂💜

#nostrartstrApril2025 - Celebrating Cycles!
For April 2025, I have a color palette, 6 textual prompts, and 6 related photos, to help you create something to celebrate the cycles we experience on this planet.
Create anything you want - a daily thing, or work all month on a single big project.
Use the tracker to celebrate your progress. I have a lot going on this month, so I'm going to try for 6 art things, one for each prompt, and just color in all 5 slots on the tracker at once.
Consider the color palette and the prompts as guidelines.
Remember, if you’ve made more art at the end of the month playing along with this art challenge than you would have otherwise, you win the art challenge.

#nostrartstrFeb2025 - Time to Color Our Collections!!!
From 2017-2024, libraries around the world contributed PDFs of coloring pages based on documents/maps/books/etc. from their vast collections: https://library.nyam.org/colorourcollections/
You can browse the PDFs in chronological order from the home pages of the website maintained by the New York Academy of Medicine, or go to the “Tools & Resources” page and checkout the column on the right that contains a lists of PDFs by year, and access to every library that has ever contributed to the project.
Take some time this month to express yourself without worrying about what to draw - just add color to some history!

The 100 Day Project has announced the start date for 2025 is February 23th …. which makes the end date June 3rd. 😅
https://the100dayproject.substack.com
I’ve tried this art challenge more times than I’ve actually finished it, but it’s fun to plan and see how far I get.
And, as with all art challenges I take on, I create more art than if I hadn’t tried, so that is always a Win. 🏆
I’ll have separate art challenges just for NostrArtstr for every month, but wanted to let you know about the 100 Day Project in case you want to give it a go.

Happy New Year!!! For January 2025 the NostrArtstr Art Challenge is A Month of Good Mornings.
Add “GM” to your art and share with the hashtag #nostrartstrJan2025
Here’s a free 31 day tracker for you to download and print to track your progress.
The Goal of these art challenges is, by the end of the month, to have created more art than you would have without taking on the challenge. So whether or finish 1 or 31 pieces, you win. And if you create one a day, you are more disciplined than me, because I usually binge and do a few every day. ;)

Fun - I’d never have thought of embroidery on canvas! This is my oldest art I still have: oil painting from mid 1980s.

Time for the NostrArtstr December Art Challenge: POST PAST ART!!!!
Since December comes with all of its own challenges and obligations, I wanted this month’s art challenge to be easy.
To participate, sometime this month, just once, post art you made this year. Or art from last year. Or art from years ago.
I’ve also made a tracker if you’d like to use it to keep yourself motivated (second image) - check the box after you’ve made your past art post to #nostr
And if you don’t have any past art to post …. maybe you want to make some art in 2025 …. ? I’ll be post monthly art challenges to this account if you want to follow along.
For all the past art you post this month, please use the hashtag #nostrartstrDec2024 - thanks!
* The little doodle people in the promo images is from a Skillshare class I took this year.

Colors & Emotions & Meanings, oh my!
If you’re interested in which colors tend to have what significance and relate to which emotions (with some differences across cultures), here’s a quick article with some basics: https://99designs.com/blog/tips/how-color-impacts-emotions-and-behaviors/
If you want to freedom to pick a specific color (my personal favorite is Navy Blue), then check out the Canvas Color Meanings & Symbolism webpage: https://www.canva.com/colors/color-meanings/ …. to read a few fun facts, see related color palettes, and all the numbers you need to create that color including the traditional Hex, CMYK, web safe and binary (?!) values.
Maybe even take time over the next few days to play with colors that soothe and relax you, just in case there might be some incoming stress in your life at the end of this month.

If you like a simple doodle style of illustration, Johanna Basford (who got the world into adult coloring books) has several free downloads on her blog:
https://www.johannabasford.com/downloads/
I really like her Small Victories set.
Great, easy way to participate in the November Art Challenge if you want to download some illustrations and just color.
Other fun options ...
- pick one illustration and color it only in a single color
- use that same illustration and color it again, this time with a different single color

If you’d like to see how one person did a single color challenge, check out this video playlist from Ten Hundred: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjvuq1J91QkYE2Nv-QQopXXv0mPKsagKh
He painted some awesome stuff using shades and tones of a single color. There are 4 videos: pink, green, blue, and yellow.
And if you thought TurdSoup.com gives you interesting random word prompts, this guy got his prompts from doing an Instagram Live, so yeah, lots of stuff going on in his paintings.

Ready for the NostrArtstr November Art Challenge?
This month is about playing with color.
If you want a 30 day goal, spend 5 days with a color. Basics are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
Or pick your own colors, if you prefer pink, brown, turquoise, black, white, or peridot.
It’s your art challenge, make it something you want to accomplish.
I’m going to be swatching out tubes of watercolor and …. doing something with the swatches. Not sure yet what.
I’m more of a binger than a daily person, so my goal is 30 bits of art by the end of the month. Given that the day is half over, I’m going to clean my art desk and start swatching tomorrow.
Free tracker available at https://www.nostrartstr.com/ if you want one to print and keep visible during the month as a bit of a poke … I mean, motivation. ;)
Please use #nostrartstrNov2024 if you share your art - I’d love to see what you create.

I've added 6 word lists to the Turd Soup Marketplace: Red Things, Orange Things, etc., for the November NostrArtstr Challenge: Play with Color.
https://turdsoup.com/ is a random word generator created by @npub12r0…9qrx - very cool stuff where you can create your own word lists or import word lists from their Marketplace. If you get stuck on what to draw/paint/create, playing with random words can help kickstart your creativity.
- My word lists are listed as Rustypuppy in the Turd Soup Marketplace
- Click on the really long gray number to see the words in any list and to Import that word list so Turd Soup can use it as a source for a random word
The “Ultimate Puff Puff Paint Word List” by @npub1tx5…hd8g and the “Random Nouns” by @npub1ymt…pxnz are great lists of stuff that could inspire your art, so be sure to check them out.

#pastchallenges - as of this date
My first art challenge on Nostr was November, 2023. I used the hashtag #nostrichnovember on my Rustypuppy account (https://rustypuppy.npub.pro/tag/nostrichnovember/) to create French Fashion Nostriches of the 1920s.
In 2024, I started this account, NostrArtstr, with the November Challenge: Play With Color, using the hashtag #nostrartstrNov2024

2024-10-23 19:38:38 UTC

The first NostrArtstr Art Challenge will be this November!
#huevember is a common art challenge online, one I did a few years ago. For NostrArtstr, I’ve simplified the colors down to the basic ROYGBV: red, yellow, orange, green yellow, blue, purple.
If you want to participate every day, spend 5 days per color.
If you want to participate every 5 days, spend a day with each color.
The amount of art stuff you do it up to you, because the Purpose of a NostrArtstr challenge is that, by the end of the month, you’ve created more than if you hadn’t taken the challenge.
As for What to Do …. That’s also up to you.
Paint, collage, create color swatches (what I’m doing), make a color wheel, create color palettes, draw with markers or crayons In Real Life or digitally, cut up strips of fabric, knit, crochet, braid colored string - whatever you want to interact with color in your chosen way.
In the coming days, I’ll be adding links and downloads to the NostrArtstr npub.pro website.
For now, think about how you’d like to participate, because I’d love to see what you create.
