#WordWeavers 10/2: Which character knows your MC better than your MC knows themselves?
Nobody. Or possibly the cat.

2026-09-25 06:24:01 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 25/9: Our next featured creator uses a separate Fedi account dedicated to their book. Do you use different accounts for different creative purposes?
I used to have a separate twitter account for the book I published under a penname. I tried to make the 'author' of that book into a character but I basically hated being deceptive and couldn't keep it up. I don't think I would have more than one account again, even without the deception, because it's way more organisational hassle than I care to cope with. I am definitely *not* an admin person.

2026-09-25 05:57:11 UTC

#WordWeavers 25/9: Do drugs or alcohol play a role in your story?
Not really. Patryk got drunk and threw up one time. That's about it.

2026-09-24 06:09:58 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 24/9: Our next featured creator will donate a portion of proceeds from book sales. Have you ever put proceeds from sales towards a cause you believe in?
I donate any money I get from my three pony books to the RSPCA. This is because I got fed up of people commenting in the negative about me 'making money' out of the original author's work (these books are fan fiction, published with permission from the originals' copyright holder). I don't think I've actually *made* any money from the books, after paying for cover art and such, but there you go.

2026-09-24 06:01:24 UTC

#WordWeavers 24/9: If your MC made a grand entrance, what fitting song would accompany them?
Lucy does not make grand entrances and she is not a movie character, so she doesn't have a soundtrack.

2026-09-20 07:20:16 UTC

#WordWeavers 20/9: How do your characters access water or whatever they need to drink?
Lucy currently lives in a house which is plumbed into the main water supply, as is her place of work. And she can buy a drink in a shop or a cafe or a pub. Later in the story when she is homeless, getting water will be more difficult, but there will be plenty available all the same. I think she is going to live in a tent in a wood outside town, but she will have some kind of job and money.

2026-09-20 07:03:57 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 20/9: Repossess?
Lucy is evicted from her house in the story although I haven't written that bit yet. It's not a repossession because she doesn't own the house. But still.

2026-09-18 06:08:55 UTC

#WordWeavers 18/9: What are three personality strengths your MC has?
Lucy is an expert at communication, especially understanding non-verbal communication. She is incredibly kind and she does not think to complain about things but just gets on with it.

2026-09-17 06:18:20 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 17/9: Link to or summarize yesterday's poll and reveal the answer.
I try to make these polls super easy because otherwise it's just a random guess (unless you have actually read my books!).
The rusty blue van is Billy's van in The Cliffhangers in which they travel for days on end (without Billy). The live-in travelling van is Alexander's van in Amber and Willem. Alexander is a travelling acrobat who Amber abandons her husband to work with and Willem... it's a long story. Arabella and the Pirates naturally features a pirate ship. She's called The Henrietta.
Haven't written a story featuring a convertible. Yet. Convertibles are something I associate with rich people (rightly or wrongly) and I don't tend to write about those.

2026-09-17 06:03:49 UTC

#WordWeavers 17/9: By the end of your story, how many injuries has your MC had?
She has a nervous breakdown although I wouldn't necessarily call that an injury. I don't think she will have any physical injuries. Maybe some blisters.

2026-09-16 06:17:40 UTC

#WordWeavers 16/9: If your MC was elected mayor of your own town, would you stay or move? Why?
Interesting question. I have no idea who the mayor of my city is - they change often and don't really do anything. In some places mayors have power and make changes, but I can't imagine I'd move away from MY city because of a politician. If there were a threat to the local area I'd be part of a movement against it. My MC would never be chosen as mayor though.

2026-09-16 06:03:59 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 16/9: Create a poll listing 2-3 objects that have featured in your work and one that hasn't. Ask people to pick the one that hasn't.
Which vehicle does not feature in any of my books?

2026-09-15 06:12:03 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 15/9: What's a situation where you feel a ';' definitely works better than a '.' ?
Whenever I want to show that two ideas are connected or part of the same 'sentence', but don't want to labour *how* they are connected by using a conjunction.

2026-09-15 06:02:02 UTC

#WordWeavers 15/9: Your characters get one completely ordinary day with no villains, quests, murders, wars, prophecies, romantic disasters, or impending apocalypses. How do they spend it?
My book doesn't have any of those things in it. Lucy mostly goes to work and watches YouTube.

2026-09-14 06:23:51 UTC

#WordWeavers 14/9: Your MC is offered exactly what they've always wanted-but accepting it will cost them something they love. What do they choose?
There is nothing that Lucy has always wanted. She would love to have a horse in a fantasy way, but not in real life - she doesn't have that kind of money, or the time, and she knows enough to know she would not enjoy the reality part of horse ownership. Lucy does not know what she actually wants, and in the story she loses everything anyway.

2026-09-13 07:06:26 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 13/9: How pedantic are you?
I just looked up pedantic. It doesn't mean exactly what I thought. I am not pedantic but perhaps people might think I am. I do not care about arbitrary rules or trivial knowledge, but I do care about language and communication. It bugs me when language is used imprecisely so that the meaning of words and phrases becomes less clear/useful. This is not pedantic.

2026-09-11 06:03:18 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 11/9: Our next featured creator is a group of three collaborators. Have you ever been part of a collaborative group for your creative work?
I collaborate creatively with my colleagues at work all the time - and the kids. I write books and songs all by myself usually, though I have co-written the occasional song. I love playing music with others. I just joined a samba band.

2026-09-11 05:59:10 UTC

#WordWeavers 11/9: What does your MC believe about themselves at the beginning of the story that turns out to be completely wrong?
All kinds of things. She thinks she is married and wealthy and that she has a horse called Grace.

2026-09-10 16:30:50 UTC

#WordWeavers 10/9: Share a description from your WIP that establishes atmosphere without explicitly naming the emotion.
I spent ages this morning looking through the story so far. Came up with absolutely nothing. Turns out I don't really do description. Oops.

2026-09-10 05:56:06 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 10th Sept: Our next featured creator is an acronym. Do you use acronyms in your work?
Well, there is Ofsted...

2026-09-07 05:51:23 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 7/9: What 'character' (letter, number, symbol, punctuation, space) would make a great main character?
This just makes me think of Sesame Street.

2026-09-06 07:12:30 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 6/9: Have you ever listened to an audiobook where the reader had a good voice, but not the 'right' voice?
I've only ever listened to audiobooks for the kids when travelling in the car to places far away. The only one I can really remember is Martin Jarvis reading 'Can't you sleep, Little Bear?' and that one was perfect. My memory does not extend to the less good ones cos it was some time ago!

2026-09-06 06:59:27 UTC

#WordWeavers 6/9: What is your MC not very good at?
Lucy is poor at recognising and valuing her own feelings. It's a pretty common affliction amongst women of a certain age.

2026-09-04 06:14:25 UTC

#WordWeavers 4/9: What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of emotional weight?
A framed photograph of Lucy's daughter Penny with a horse/pony. The horse is Grace who was bought as a mother-daughter share, except that story totally falls apart and the horse is actually a pony from the riding school Penny went to for a while when she was a kid. The photo reminds Lucy of the past and swings her from one reality to another. There is also a photo of Patryk with a ginger kitten and a photo of an old woman with a horse called Minty which Lucy encounters in a house that is entirely imaginary but also a YouTube video.

2026-09-02 06:12:18 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 2/9: How do you think where you live affects your creative work?
I've lived in the same town/city most of my life and I consider it *my* city even though I wasn't born here. My city gives me places to settle my stories in and many of the ideas in my stories are rooted here. It's great to have lived in the same place a long time because its community affords creative opportunities but you also feel like you want to champion the place through art as well as working to make things better for everyone. This year I wrote three songs about my city and sang them with my school choir.

2026-09-02 05:55:33 UTC

#WordWeavers 2/9: What would your MC notice first upon entering a crowded room?
Whatever served the story. Most times in the story so far when she's in a crowded room I haven't written the part where she enters. One time I can remember writing her entering a crowded room she notices a bunch of things but I wouldn't say any of them are *first* or that the first thing would be the most significant. Surely the first thing one notices when entering a room (crowded or otherwise) is going to depend what is *in* the room, which would be different for each room??

2026-09-01 06:46:57 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 1/9: It's September. List 7 things about your creative pursuits (accomplishments, goals, etc.)
I am writing a book - halfway through first draft
I wrote 14 songs in February
I played out at a couple of open mic/stage things this summer
I've learned a bunch of new fiddle tunes
I'm thinking of learning how to play guitar in a ceilidh band
I'm hoping to finish two knitting projects this autumn/winter
I just joined a samba band

2026-09-01 06:20:15 UTC

#WordWeavers 1/9: What is something your MC desperately wants but would never admit to wanting?
Lucy has no idea what she wants.

2026-08-31 11:48:10 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 31/8: Choose an adverb to sum up how your month went.
Swimmingly.

2026-08-30 06:46:59 UTC

#WordWeavers 30/8: If you could interview one of your characters over coffee, what would be the first question you asked?
Since I made my characters up, there's nothing about them I don't know.

2026-08-29 07:51:47 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 29/8: At age 11, our TTMD guest answered 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' with 'Author.' Do you know what you wanted to be at 11?
Not for sure, but I probably wanted to be an actor or a musician. Or a professional horse rider.

Dear writing community - a question for those of you who publish through D2D.
Is it better to use free ISBNs from D2D or to buy ones own? What is your experience and advice?

holy crap, I'm British and I know what that means. Maybe you need a new editor!

#WritersCoffeeClub 21/4: What's a (maybe silly) hill you're willing to defend?
I love metaphors, I mean, a lot. But if you want to communicate something *clearly*, use plain language. There aren't any hills in Milton Keynes. There's one right next to my mum's house in Scotland that I guess I would speak up for if it was under threat. And actually, why should familial association be a factor? Fuck it, I'll defend any old hill. Up the hills and boo to anyone who wants to attack them.

#ScribesAndMakers 30/3: Do birds ever feature in your work? Give an example.
Oh most definitely. In Rum, Lily is turned into a blackbird by her jealous sister and remains a blackbird for most of the story. And there are loads of bird characters in Amber and Willem. Most notably Gilly and Garnet the ganders who tell Willem stories.

I used to hear voices when I was a kid. It was much better when they were silent. Happily that was most of the time!

I pretty much always read the first few pages of a book before I buy it. Or more. Some books don't seem like my thing, most, probably, so I don't buy them. Not the book's fault. Or even if it is, I figure I can only review it if I actually read it. The only exception would be if it was a highly recommended book and it was actually offensive.

2025-10-18 17:21:42 UTC

Would you review a book if you'd only read two pages of it? Seems a bit out there to me.

#ScribesAndMakers 13/9: Self promotion.
This book seems to have come up in conversation recently. Only available on amazon because basically, that's my affordable option...

#ScribesAndMakers 27/8: What is a genre or style that you think is underappreciated?
I wish more people would get a kick out of stories that don't conform to any particular style or genre. My favourite thing to read is something truly original where I have no idea what might happen and can find out about things I would never have imagined myself. But most people don't seem to be into that so it's hard to find.

schools in the UK vary on this. My kids went to different secondaries. The older one: branded everything down to PE socks where the younger one's school demanded no branded uniform at all except the blazer and you could just get the badge and stick/sew it on, so not expensive. Schools choose all of this stuff individually. I hate primary school uniform though, looks so dull.
