A little bit of context: someone came up with publisher feeds to prove publishership of RSS feeds.
Later, vc-funded companies who publish other people's feeds for a living decided that they needed to use publisher feeds to gather their artists' feeds together, as publisher feeds are the only way to prove links between feeds.
Meanwhile, small-time labels saw the word "publisher" and assumed it was reserved for publishers who publish, so they used it for their label's artists.
And here is where we are today: sometimes the link means artist, sometimes it does not, and anything else (arbitrary strings) is unproven guesswork.
My proposal is to let indexes not have to guess what the (only provable) link means; specify the link type. This way, we can prove and link whatever we want forever and all the time.

Hi Oscar. I run musicindex.org, a music index of V4V feeds. Fountain feeds are the best case in it: each of the 330 Fountain albums names its publisher feed, and the 70 Fountain publisher feeds list their albums back. Only one fact is missing: whether the publisher is the artist or a label.
Would Fountain write rel="artist" or rel="label" on both sides of a publisher link? The publisher chooses once: Not stated, Artist or Label. "Not stated" writes nothing. Kolomona proposed the attribute in namespace discussion #579, and it waits for implementations: https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/discussions/579
I have a full description with XML examples, if it helps.

The government doesn't want you to know this but, V4V music is basically Music Side Project.
Podcast apps may or may not support new tags and technologies musicians and listeners want, and that's because they are podcast apps getting podcasts from the podcast index.
The HeyCitizen Experience is a product of its time. The artist name is in the album title, because how else would you find it? It's a podcast.
I'm working on building a music index to begin addressing these issues. Artists are much more than podcasts or publishers. They may have Bandcamp, Musicbrainz and nostr identities. The only way to get that sorted out is to make it easy for the artists to submit that data properly.
This is the great power and responsibility of MSP and MSP2

Hey @npub13ql…qcg7
Do you ever reflect on how talking crap about #YouTube #AppleMusic #Spotify is hurting the artists?
Most artists are trying really hard to earn a living on these platforms, and what you and Dave are doing is not helping them.
