For my birthday, my brother-in-law gave me a 4992-digit hex number that, when used as a seed for Python’s random number generator, makes it so that printing a sequence of “random” ASCII characters actually prints a birthday greeting.
I find it rather amazing that this is possible!
This is the program he sent with the seed:
with open("seed.txt", encoding="ascii") as handle:
seed = int(handle.read().strip(), 0)
r = random.Random(seed)
pending = ""
while True:
character = chr(r.randrange(128))
if pending + character == "\x1e\x1f":
break
print(pending, end="")
pending = character
print()

@nprofile…uy2p In this particular example, the dual map has order 4. You can more or less see that from the two-color model: the dual map represents a rotation by 90°.

You can pretty much see just from that photograph that passing from the polyhedron to its dual corresponds to a 90° rotation; so of course doing it twice must correspond to a 180° rotation, rather than to the identity transformation.

I’m trying to understand the precise nature of the self-duality of these polyhedra. Since the polyhedra have no symmetry, it must be involutive, so there are three possibilities. (Either the two polyhedra are related by central inversion, by a 180° rotation, or by a reflection in an equatorial plane.)
Here is one of them with its dual. It is apparently related to its dual by a 180° about some arbitrary-looking axis.

A tangent from my main thread: here is a surprising fact about polyhedral self-duality.
It’s possible for a polyhedron to be self-dual, but only in such a way that applying the duality map twice DOESN’T return the polyhedron to its starting position.
Here’s the paper (from 1989), but because it’s 2026 I’m going to make a 3d-printable version of this polyhedron. Hopefully that won’t take tooooo long – bear with me.

You can think of the quad graph as being a combination of the original planar graph with its planar dual.
Now, a (spherical) polyhedron is self-dual if and only if it’s isomorphic to its dual, or equivalently iff there is a part-reversing automorphism of its quad graph.
So that’s what I mean when I say that self-duality is akin to symmetry. Precisely, it is a symmetry of the quad graph. Since our original polyhedra(l graphs) have no symmetry, the only symmetries of the quad graph there could possibly be are part-reversing ones, i.e. dualities.

2026-01-20 18:51:55 UTC

- reply

That’s interesting, because self-duality is almost a sort of symmetry.
Let me explain. Given a polyhedron P, which for these purposes we can think of as a graph of vertices and edges drawn on the surface of a sphere, we can construct another graph, a bipartite one, that has two types of vertex: a vertex for every of P, and also a vertex for every face of P. Whenever a vertex is on the boundary of a face, we connect the corresponding vertices of our new graph.
It would be nice if there were a standard name for this derived graph, but every paper I’ve read that uses it gives it a different name. Archdeacon and Richter call it the radial graph; Felsner and Rote call it the angle graph; Ziegler calls it the quad graph.
Of those names, I think I like ‘quad graph’ the best, because it describes an important feature of this graph, which is that all of its faces are quadrilaterals. So for now let’s call it that.

2026-01-20 18:43:04 UTC

- reply

Since they have the same number of faces as vertices, and their defining property of asymmetry is preserved by duality, they must either be dual to each other or both be self-dual.
It’s easy to see they are not dual to each other. For example, one has a pentagonal face, and the other has at most 4 edges meeting at each vertex.
So they must both be self-dual.

We hear so much about symmetrical polyhedra. What about their asymmetrical cousins?
Here are the two simplest – I think – convex polyhedra that have no symmetry at all, even combinatorially. In other words, they have no non-trivial automorphisms as graphs.
Both of them have 7 vertices and 7 faces.

@nprofile…hmdu @nprofile…udvu Yes, I think that's the underlying effect. @nprofile…f5cp I’m struggling to access your intuition that it isn’t obvious! Is there any way you can make it seem less obvious to me?

@nprofile…cz9e I agree it's not helpful writing, but I don't think it's trying to be helpful in that way. It's aimed at a reader who already knows perfectly well what a reflection is, and its purpose is to fix terminology and notation.

@nprofile…cz9e Thanks for letting me know. Interesting. I’m not seeing any z-fighting there.

I couldn’t find one online, so I sketched a very rough approximation of the Toblehedrone here: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/enneahedron-06563f7881d34b23b7708e2c3419a135

@nprofile…f38c @nprofile…eljp What a good thing they made sure C didn’t have any obvious footguns! :-)

@nprofile…f38c @nprofile…eljp Thanks, that must indeed be the reason. (Though I suspect it would usually have worked ok in practice, as long as the the comparison operators returned 0 for false and ~0 for true.)

@nprofile…eljp @nprofile…f38c Considering that C was initially extremely minimalist, and did not have a boolean type separate from int, it’s curious that it had a logical negation operator distinct from bitwise negation. I wonder why.

@nprofile…f38c I don’t know which programming language was the first to use ! for negation, but it can’t have been C because C’s immediate predecessor B also used it: https://web.archive.org/web/20150611114427/https://www.bell-labs.com/usr/dmr/www/kbman.pdf

@nprofile…a9a8 This one seems to work well; or at least if there is a false solution, it isn't significantly easier to discover than the true one. I'm afraid I didn't take a note of how long it took me to solve, but I do remember that I failed at my first attempt and returned to it the following day, so it wasn't trivial.

@nprofile…a9a8 I messed about a few years ago with trying to design puzzles based on geometric packings, mainly of circles into rectangles (which I implemented as bearing balls in a wooden tray). I ran into the problem that there very often exist alternative packings that are only micro-fractionally worse: for a good puzzle one of course needs a decent gap between the intended solution and the next best packing.
(I was rather encouraged to see that Stewart Coffin's Five Fit puzzle has the same flaw.)
