The german media reporting about the massive #France protests agairnst the cost of living is ridiculously small. Even CNN in the US is more extensively reporting with live updates, as is BBC, and then also Aljazeera, as evolving top stories. Tagesschau or Spiegel? An article somewhere further down without much depth. And this is DE biggest EU partner and neighbor. What is wrong with german media that it always tries to downplay leftist happenings and only reports if it can't be avoided?

It's been a while since i published a new #Python tool but here is a fresh one i am increasingly using myself "srcloc":.
It's for those of us working with source trees, git and testing and care about good balance. srcloc shows info about how many lines belong to tests, code, comments/docs, supporting Python, Rust, Java, and a host of other languages.
It's a pity btw that no one got around to bring some #pytest features to Rust but i digress :)

Most national states are reverting in front of our eyes to their inner authoritarian cores, waging war against and terrorizing their own populations. More police and more military powers, shifting to war economies, shitting on healthcare, human rights and social services and ecologic diversity, ignoring and fossil-fuelling the climate heating catastrophe, and engaging in century old tropes of "the foreigners are the problem". And it's all not even hidden but reported and observable in daylight.

2026-05-05 07:42:23 UTC

So the German gov wants to build the largest european military until 1939, sorry I mean 2039 and engages in fossil fuel, pro-billionaire and anti-immigrant politics, strengthening the AFD who might take over governing ~2033?
No further questions, your honour.

@nprofile…l8gu Why do the failures of gpg imply that openpgp and rfc9580 are bad? Have you looked at modern ways of doing openpgp and email like https://chatmail.at does it?

There are also many broken ways to implement signal protocols but they are not useful as examples for discrediting signal.

@nprofile…5lue if the state has an "anlass", like a suspicion accepted by a court, there are already laws that allow inspecting a phone or launching a trojan. I think "Anlasslos" is a key part of the chatcontrol pushed by Denmark, Spain and other states. So I am not sure how you would substitute that word and still arrive at mass surveillance.

2025-10-07 20:19:04 UTC

@nprofile…5lue it's not 100 percent but the CDU parliamentarians faction went on public record opposing chatcontrol innits current form which makes it hard for the gov to agree to it, even if formally possible. There could still be changes and more efforts from the danish presidency to get some variation through I guess but it's uphill now.

#afdverbot is a discussion in Germany about whether to attempt to prohibit a rising fascist party. The question is raised whether it's good democratic style to prohibit thembecause they get 20% of national vote. I don't care. If you can prevent Nazis from taking power again in f***ing germany then the respective laws and leverage put in place 70 years ago need to be exercised to maximum extent. They are always going to paint themselves as victims until they mass-kill again. Gloves off.

Back when i studied cryptography in the 1990ties, my wonderful professor gave an intro lecture and one of his first points was: "Securrity" by itself does not exist. You have to state the property you want to secure, and describe the attack model. Moreover, claiming "security" as a generic absolute feature marks someone who does not really know what they are talking about. Can't unforget this lecture ;)

all humans on planet earth can stand next to each other on *Mallorca*, a small island in the Mediterranean sea. It'd be a bit cozy (2-3 people on each square meter) but it's useful to have this scale in mind when someone talks about "overpopulation".

There are two types of countries when it comes to accountability of top politicians -- Brazil https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/apr/25/brazil-fernando-collor-just arrested a former head of state and France are known to not shy away from prosecuting former top politicians. On the other end of the spectrum, Germany, the UK and the US consistently fail to prosecute top politicians and corruption at the top. That's at least my rough view. Maybe there is a scientifically done survey?

Regarding the many snitch lines that authoritarians have (and currently do) setup to inform their brutality: It mirrors middle age European "witch hunts" madness but note: it eventually stopped because convicted witches could implicate conspirators and used it to take revenge on powerful figures. In german Würzburg three percent of the city population was killed from increasingly many walks of.life, including the powerful. Poisoning snitch lines might be today's equivalent action?

While deranged billionaires phantasize about a town square they control and direct as mob leaders, town squares are really everywhere, on every street corner, shop, git issue, web site/forum and the fediverse. Planet wide town squares are already massively distributed but the most populous town squares are the least interesting and often most toxic. I am on a long running quest to disregard the popular and seeking or adoring popularity, and orient arounds fringes, shadows, friends, affinity.

2025-04-10 07:24:16 UTC

The social democrats advertised the last three decades "we can regulate capitalism and through reforms get a more liberal, equal society" and now face the absolute desaster of their politics .... "Preventing the extreme right from taking over" is now the only empty remaining content ... While implementing far right authoritarian politics that align with billionaires interests, and resisting many popular movements that demand fundamental change.

#reichinnek

Do you remember February and March 2020? I was walking around the neighborhood today at 5am just as I was five years ago. A feeling of impending dramatic mass-scale changes rising. This time it's a political, a self-inflicted pandemic but no less severe and profound in terms of mass-psychological shifts. What is the equivalent of masking up today? Maybe it's about turning away from macro politics and engaging in micro politics and mental health care with neighbors and friends, in solidarity?

Turns out that computing power does translate to political power. See inauguration pictures of tech billionaires and political office holders. The old "we come from cyberspace, your ruling does not apply to us" stance aged badly or needs to be followed up, reworked. Computing is political. Which networks and algorithms are at play and who runs and controls them does matter. It created billionaires who then double as political state-aligned actors, usurping politics or getting usurped.

Most new interesting projects in the social media or messenger space get started by few or even single people. That's totally fine. But if years into development, with a sizable user community, a very hyped project is still centered on a single person with no cooperative dev community to speak of I consider it a warning sign. Mid to long term it is not (only) individual genius but cooperation abilities and practises that allow evolving a sustainable alternative app or service.

2025-01-10 10:36:17 UTC

Any social media, including the fediverse, is prone to create "hate mobs". They may not be algorithmically amplified and not be driven by bots but humans aiming for "takes that go viral" and reinforce a certain sentiment (be it against maga, be it against AI, be it against billionaires) go some way. Just saying. See also "extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds" from Charles McKay, an incredible journalistic book from 1840ties where nothing like social media existed.

Friend of mine just arrived at Strasbourg station, the European capital, and witnesses racial profiling .... France, Germany, Italy governments are jointly destroying what was hailed as "the peaceful European project", returning it to its colonial racist roots, with many self stylish progressives involved.
