Unfiltered Japan

Unfiltered is an independent, grassroots platform focusing on features, analysis, and longform investigations. We dig into underreported stories to convey to local and international audiences who want to better understand the real side of Japan.

Our members reflect Japan’s emerging diversity, and that allows us to amplify forgotten voices both in and outside of Japan but also on Japan’s role in the world.

This week, we're happy to share a piece by Taiwan-based writers Michelle Kuo and Albert Wun on a documentary about Taiwanese soldiers and prisoners of wars who served under Imperial Japan during World War II.
Released in early September in Japan, Memories Frozen in Time is a new documentary which focuses on Taiwan-born, Japan resident Masao Go, who volunteered for the Japanese army & trained as a radio operator. The war’s end would carry him into Soviet captivity, one of the few Taiwanese swept into the Siberian camps, and perhaps the last man left among them.

Catch the second part of Unfiltered's discussion with Joan Bailey, Rich Bailey and [@Matt_Noyes](https://social.coop/@Matt_Noyes ) the movement to protect Democracy in the United States and the linkages to Japan's own political struggles.
As Japan is pushing for tighter policies for foreign residents, we go on a deep dive into the No Kings Protest in small US cities and how these messages were reflected in a recent protest held in the trendy #Shimokitazawa area of #Tokyo.

Iceland has topped the World Economic Forum’s gender equality rankings for the last 16 years. In our latest article, Joan Bailey explores insights from Secrets of the Sprakkar by Eliza Reid, which blends interviews with women across politics, business, agriculture, and the arts to understand how real progress happened.
Some of Iceland's secrets behind their success includes:
• Paid parental leave for both parents
• Subsidized childcare and strong public healthcare
• Corporate gender quotas and high workforce participation
• A powerful history of collective action — including the 1975 “Women’s Day Off”
These efforts resulted in a stronger economy, growing population, and a society focused on how how to achieve equality.
Japan continues its own journey toward gender equality, Iceland stands as a valuable role model on effective principles.

For Unfiltered, @npub14ct…km94 dives into how polluting palm oil power plants harms local communities, and the powerful movement that has, so far, successfully prevented two projects from being built. Harvesting palm oil also means #deforestation and land‑use change in #SoutheastAsia especially plantations on peatlands—which leads to high greenhouse‑gas emissions.
Read in more detail about the short and long term effects this will have on #Japan and its neighboring countries.
