If you lost your job and you're trying to get work via LinkedIn or anything else where a version of your CV/resumé is online, I have one piece of advice.
Don't mark yourself as no longer in your last job unless someone demands it. Do not appear to be unemployed.
Recruitment has never been more conservative. I'm 6 months in my job after some time in the wilderness, and when I added my current job, suddenly I started getting contacted out of the blue again.

As people have been talking about "Adobe-beating technology" this week, here's a big list of Adobe-beating technology that someone compiled. Much of it free!
Who needs world-boiling slop clones that will be abandoned in a month, when the magic of shopping around was inside us all along. ✨

Does anyone else work a software job where you have to pretend that LLM code generation tools are better than they are if you want to get paid?
Have been instructed to hammer them so that the person who bought them into the company will like our department more.

2026-09-01 13:29:34 UTC

- reply

they should make some sort of library for software, like for things that are a common requirement but they require a lot of work.
I'll get an LLM to invent it for me, I've been eating ketamine sandwiches three times a day for a year and it seems like the only way.

2026-09-01 10:59:34 UTC

At the current rate of going a lot of people will need to add (but not into ethnic cleansing) in their bios after where it says FOSS or Open Source or whatever by about Halloween

ok, I'll ask this question in your voice:
You do realize that there's more to software licenses than where copies of the code are stored?

lol
ok if my day job gets rogered for publishing code infringing these licenses, I'll tell the court you said it doesn't count

Yes, I have professionally deployed ML solutions in my time. My wife has professionally deployed neural nets.
it's actually possible to understand things and disagree with you

Do you understand that LLMs can generate license-infringing code as a result of training on licensed data?

2026-08-15 11:10:46 UTC

- reply

I'm not a fanatic, I'm a professional.
Tell me how scraping for LLM training observes and respects copyright licensing, including ensuring that no "copyleft" code ends up in proprietary software. Because this is a quagmire.
(I also asked Claude how LLM scrapers respect licensing and it said they mostly don't :hehe_lizard: )

2026-08-15 10:59:12 UTC

No, that's just a cop out, as was your original statement.
Literally nothing I referred to is a controversial take. Reams and reams have been written about these topics by professionals at the coal face.
You just want people to stop criticising the thing you like.
I look at LLM-generated code every single day.
Your whole argument is "but I don't care"
If you don't care, stop replying to people about it.

That's nice, I know plenty of experienced folks who think it's a pile of shite and an accident waiting to happen, before they even get to the theft, DDOSing half the internet, ignoring software license (another timebomb)
And that it can have some use isn't the question, it's whether it's a net benefit, whether the dangers posed are harms caused are worth it.
"I find it useful". Ok, but that's not what's being discussed. I like ice cream.

I don't agree with that characterisation at all.
I'm one of many developers who interact with this technology daily and find it wanting. I have to use it if I want to keep my job because management believe the marketing, but I am aghast at the prospect of supporting the stuff we're slopping out over the long term. Based on evaluating and understanding the output.
Our work is bullshit anyway but I would never use it for something critical.

So now we realize the problem with the Amnesty report, which resulted in a fucking oddball billionaire threatening to SLAPP Amnesty UK out of existence, was its revealing all the US funding from extremely conservative organizations.
These people tried to do the same shit in Ireland with gay marriage and abortion access.
I'm curious what the differences have been in terms of reportage and success rates. Are UK politicians more easily manipulated, are Irish politicians just aware of EU law?

Recently saw someone talking about a person who took time off their job for their mental health, "but" they went on a nice surfing holiday.
As we all know, if someone needs time off for their mental health, they spend that time lying on the floor going "AAAAHHH MY BRAIN!"
And doing something nice for yourself just makes it worse.

"If you're so smart, why don't I see Google on your CV" is the tech industry's version of "If you're so smart why aren't you rich?"
That's why they're so hard to argue with. Any difference of opinion is evidence that your brain isn't as good as theirs. They worked with the smartest people ever you know. They were the Albert Einsteins of invasion of privacy.

Tagging on one more thing about "tech folks" and I technically am one so I'm allowed say it.
There's loads of intelligent, friendly people in tech who are so used to not thinking about certain things, that they think you're weird if you do.
- stealing from artists
- pollution for speculation
- causing psychological harm
- invading privacy
- participating in war crimes
- doing business with tyrants

It's hard to be polite when people pretend not to understand what exactly people hate about this stuff.
I've been around so many tech debates over the years and LLM hype is the winner for patronizing absolute bullshit.
It comes down to people who want to do what they like, and still want to be liked. Sorry, but we're all adults, you have to pick one.
You can't fuck people over and still expect them to play with you.

Putting on my "not taking the piss" hat, I think sometimes people get frustrated, ultimately, by the fact that fedi isn't about shared values as much as it is overlapping values.
And it's cool cuz everyone can play their part in that context.
But there are tendencies that many of us are here to _escape_. Call it Big Bad Tech. Anti-BBT sentiment is a major, well-established building block of this thing.
And the LLM boom is a distillation of some of the worst BBT tendencies.

The headline: Claude Code hacked these websites, we didn't ask it 😱
The article: we made http endpoints that act like something from an SQL injection vulnerability example from 2002. Then Claude used SQL injection techniques from 2002 that it probably got from an article about those.

I like an AI fail news story as much as the next person, but do resist the lure of the Birmingham/Maccabi Tel Aviv story being repackaged as an AI fail story.
It's an Israeli propaganda success story, and a police chief has had to resign over doing something that Israeli police do themselves, and with a lot less diplomacy.
https://news.sky.com/story/tel-aviv-football-derby-cancelled-as-violent-riots-see-nine-arrested-13453239
Haven't heard UK politicians say that Tel Aviv must not become a "no go area for Jews" yet though. Probably because it would be harder to justify.

I was asked by someone why my Home timeline is so much prettier than theirs. I follow hashtags is why.
Including but not limited to:
#minipainting
#ceramics
#mushtodon
#bloomscrolling
#aurora
#sculpture
#mastoart *
#illustration
#printmaking
The trick is going for specific arts and crafts, you find people who are into it.
For whatever reason I find #mastoart a lot better to follow than #art as the latter is way more broad like a really nice sandwich is a work of art.

I find myself thinking about the difference between non-profit projects and community-owned projects, in relation to LLM adoption which doesn't show apparent sympathy for community and volunteers.
Wikipedia and Mozilla seem hell-bent on shoehorning LLMs into their systems, in the latter case blowing away community labour. There's no sense in it beyond groupthink.
Are tech non-profits separate from industry, or a section of it that doesn't make money?

I'm not mad surprised. Open Source is, to a large extent, another avenue for having a career in an industry which doesn't give a fuck about you if you're lucky. It's overwhelmingly a commons with a paywall.
It's full of people who get very cross when you suggest that what happens to people might be more important than what license something uses. Or how many computers they can get talking to each other.
A techo-libertarian circlejerk, is what I'm saying.

2025-10-09 10:23:59 UTC

Why do people think free software (Open Source as the problem children call it) is not politics, and everything else is.
Why are FOSSbros so depressing.
Saying this cus I had Framework as a fantasy purchase but their team has decided that supporting projects by David Hanmeier Hanson, of Ruby and Rails and writing blog posts in support of Tommy Robinson fame, is NOT being political. It is the _absence_ of politics and they are being VERY GROWN UP by not caring about white nationalism.

Both sides of the border in Ireland we have people burning out (possible) refugee accommodation and immigrant-owned businesses and attacking people who look foreign.
Fascist demos are getting bigger every time.
The Republic could have had the Hate Crime Bill in place by now.
Instead it was delayed by Senators McDowell and Mullen because they didn't want any law that tolerates nonbinary gender.
