I’m eternally fascinated by this public safety poster that shows up around the British rail network, which suggests you might wonder of a stranger “Why have they been hanging around for so long?”
Surely to wonder that, you must’ve been hanging around for at least as long, and are therefore just as suspicious if not more so?

Near where I live, there's a tower on a hill on the horizon. This is a photo I didn't take of that tower, standing proud in the evening light, the moon alongside it peeking through a gap in the clouds.
I knew my phone wouldn't do it justice, and I knew if I went back for my SLR the moment would've passed before I got back, so I just enjoyed it for myself, and then continued on my walk.

I tire of the everything box
I crave the tactile
buttons should feel like buttons
not fingers on glass
the only thing it does right is letting me adjust the volume without looking
remember buttons?
remember owning something and knowing it so intimately that you could identify each button, each knob, each switch, from touch alone? I love my film SLR
every button, every switch, every dial has a purpose
I can adjust the exposure compensation without looking because It’s a physical knob with click stops
same for the aperture ring on the lens
same for every single aspect of it
every function is a distinct mechanical part with its own feel
I could probably load film into it blind if I needed
maybe I’ll try that sometime

bought another film camera (oh no) and this one's got that feature where it can stamp the photos with the date, and i've finally figured out why those datestamps were always reddish orange
it's because the date is projected from the pressure plate onto the back of the film
the layer structure of color film means that light coming from the back is only going to expose the red-sensitive layer and maybe the green-sensitive layer
(for those who know what redscale is, it's that)

so apparently glitchsoc has a feature that lets you share a post only to your local instance, and prevent it from federating to the wider fediverse
whether a post is local-only or not is made available to clients via the not-in-vanilla-mastodon local_only: bool field in the Status struct returned by the api
on the surface, this is a neat idea, however the execution is... something.
as far as I can tell, if a post is to be local-only, the glitchsoc frontend silently appends the eye emoji (👁️) to the end of the post body, and the glitchsoc server interprets this as the signal that the post shouldn't federate
what this means in practice is that if you're on a glitchsoc instance and you explicitly make a post that ends with that emoji, the post won't federate, regardless of whether you toggled the local-only setting or not

reading up on the technicolor process again
i knew it recorded red/green/blue onto three separate strips of b&w film, but i always assumed it was splitting the light in three directions, through filters, and onto identical strips of film
turns out it's much cleverer than that, and only has to split the light in two directions
one path goes through a green filter and onto a strip of film to capture the green image, as i'd assumed, but the other path is wild
it goes through a magenta filter to block any green light, and then hits two strips of film pressed against each other - an orthochromatic film captures the blue image, then a layer of red-orange dye blocks any residual blue light, and then finally a panchromatic film captures the red image

I think I'm gonna die mad at Olympus's marketing division -
Consider the OM-1, a film camera released in 1972 by Olympus as part of their OM System product line, not to be confused with the OM System OM-1, a digital camera released in 2022 by Olympus subsidiary OM Digital Solutions Corporation.
Oh, and they use completely different lens mounts too, so good luck trying to find OM-mount lenses for the OM System film cameras because half the search results are micro-four-thirds lenses for the OM System digital cameras instead.

While today it’s near-ubiquitous to have both, early CPUs often featured a ‘mul’ instruction while lacking a corresponding ‘div’
Meanwhile, as of 2024, HTML is the only major language to feature ‘div’ but no ‘mul’

2024-11-18 20:37:20 UTC

You may be familiar with an oft-repeated factoid about the word bear, referring to mammals of the family Ursidae. It typically goes something like this:
Did you know that “bear” doesn’t derive from the creature’s original name? It was feared that speaking its true name would summon one, and over time the original name fell out of favor as people adopted “the brown one” or similar as a euphemism, which eventually evolved into the “bear” that we know today.
The historical truth of the matter is, of course, far more nuanced and the subject of much debate, which I won’t attempt to unravel here. But regardless of its accuracy, it’s a fun story, and it makes me kinda sad that this sort of thing doesn’t really happen any more.
After all, in these enlightened 21st century times, we know there aren’t any creatures that sit patiently watching, listening, waiting to be summoned by one who would speak their true name.

Delivery options, as someone with ADHD:
⚪️ Next day (extremely convenient)
⚪️ Two weeks (you will forget and be pleasantly surprised when it arrives)
⚪️ 3-4 days (you will be stuck in waiting mode, constantly checking the tracking information, unable to do anything until it arrives)

an observation:
the Game Boy Camera captures 128×112 @ 2 bits per pixel → 3,584 bytes per image
3,584 bytes × 365 days → 1,308,160 bytes → ~1.3MB
if you take one Game Boy Camera photo a day, you could fit a year of photos on a single floppy disk
