Hmm, if I get a "personal agent" from some kind of company, and that company goes out of business, can it be auctioned off to the highest bidder? Like my personal data apparently can?

Very interesting tidbits from the research @nprofile…nhrn performed recently. Such as:
"Respondents said they still commonly use other platforms often seen as antithetical to the fediverse – including YouTube (61%), Instagram (34%), WhatsApp (30%), and Facebook (15%)."
What if we designed our open social web software with the understanding that people use closed platforms, too? What would change?

@nprofile…twh5 Unions only started approx. in the middle of those 250 years afaik. Same for taxes, I think the US started out with flat income taxes.

Looking back over 250 years, if you had to plot a score for the "health" of the United States since its founding, what would that graph look like?
Which times were better than now? Which times were worse?
I'm afraid I don't know enough US history to really have a firm opinion on many decades.
(For some value of "health")

W Social seems to have been quite successful in getting a big part of the EU establishment to sign up. Congratulations!
One wonders though if the step from US social media companies to a EU social media company was big enough. Wouldn't a move to *your own instance* in the fediverse been better?

What if we did one better? Publish to PeerTube first, and YouTube only later?
(Does this strategy have a name?)

I want to applaud @nprofile…9ad5 and @nprofile…ruhq for appearing on stage together and expressing a desire to cooperate. As I've said for a long time, #Bluesky and #Mastodon, #ActivityPub and #ATProtocol should not be fighting each other. The real opposition are the oligarch-controlled, enshittified, manipulating major commercial platforms. We have no chance of making a dent into their dominance if the revolution fights itself instead.

If you've been interviewed by a member of the press who then wrote an article, you'll almost certainly have experienced that the final article wasn't quite accurate on some things. Not surprisingly because you are the expert, not the reporter, and they have less understanding about the subject than you do.
If you gave the interview transcript to an "AI" instead and had it write an article, it might hallucinate and not "understand" things either. But will it be worse? Anyone done the experiment?

We need to separate identity from servers in the ActivityPub world. It's time. I should be able to have a single identity and use it with lots of servers from Mastodon to Lemmy and beyond.
Then, various instances could reflect different communities with different people in them, different features and policies.
This also would elegantly solve the "instance selection paralysis" in @nprofile…3wy7 's Deadly Fediverse UX sin #1.
Fortunately @nprofile…kzgj is starting to assemble people to solve this.

One of the consequences of not seeing the same comments on a post on all ActivityPub servers is that some issue discussed already gets brought up again by people who saw the original post later.
That's bad enough when people don't read through comments before they post their own comment, but in this case, they actually can't!

Accept a plane as a gift?? Beyond the incredible corruption, anybody remember the Moscow embassy in the 80s where supposedly the microphones were in the very beams of the building?

Summer definitely has arrived. Criteria: I feel like melting in my home office after having been on calls for which I had the door closed. (It tends to get really warm in the summer if the door is closed.)

Excellent third piece in @nprofile…mpj6 's series on product strategies for the open social web.
Interestingly, basically nobody follows anything remotely close to this strategy that I'm aware of (if you are aware of somebody, I'd appreciate pointers). You may quibble with it, or disagree, but very worthwhile reading.

"... “problematic content” is not the main problem,... The real problem is that platforms obscure the social context of what we see, leading us to mistakenly believe that “viral” content reflects a broad consensus, when in reality it often reflects the views of a narrow community."

Rather “interesting” quotes from the report of the German domestic intelligence service on the AfD party being “confirmed right-wing extremist”.
If you make certain translations (say, immigrants from Africa vs from Central America) it sounds very similar to the rhetoric of the American right wing.
