from Wikipedia article (because I was surprised as well):
"The form Excellency was used for the governors of most of the original Thirteen Colonies, and the practice formally continued after independence. For example, the term was formerly used in Georgia on the state governor's letterhead, the text of executive orders, any document that required the governor's signature, and informal settings. However, in most states the practice fell out of use (or was never introduced) and the title Honorable is now used instead.[31]"

so, I'm not saying this is a good thing, just a potentially interesting one (better you than I 😜), but: hundreds to thousands of years from now, assuming we haven't bombed ourselves back to the stone age, I imagine future anthropologists/historians will find the continuity and abundance of your posts to be quite valuable.
Of course, if current trends continue (though I'm still optimistic they won't), said posts will just be used to build an LLM of you 😛

do you have any thoughts on/insights into the following? I think you've been doing a better job keeping abreast of this topic than I have.
Am I likely to be correct in assuming that, regardless of what Linux does or does not implement, all Web/Internet services are going to start querying the client's OS for this age-data? Or does the legislation place mandates on the OS providers, but leave utilization up to the service providers' discretion?

I feel like you would've already thought of/tried this: but if it didn't work, then that means I've been using rsync wrong and I'd like to know about it: if you pass the `-a` flag to rsync (or go dig out the specific flag from all the ones 'a' turns on), that should make rsync match the timestamps on the new file to the timestamps on the old file.

one thing I've always appreciated in the intersection between coding and computer-science/mathematics is, when you can use a naïve approach initially, to get answers fast; but then have to switch to a more sophisticated algorithm to have any hope of scaling. I'll see if I can come up with some specific examples…

something I haven't seen specifically mentioned is, if this nonsense continues, we won't HAVE any more open-source software: not just because the current scrapers will wear them down; but because, if "AI-coding" becomes the only coding, then subscription-based development will become the only programming & only corporate programmers (if they're even allowed) will be able to contribute open-source code.

@npub1lq6…nf7e if you wouldn't mind sharing your perspective: I've read several accounts of historical fads relating to AI, that all ended with AI Winters. Do you have a sense of how this round of hype compares to previous ones (e.g. in the 80s, for "expert systems", IIRC)? I wasn't old enough to follow along in realtime.

so, I'm a bit embarrassed to even admit this in public, but: I've seen _most_ of the Highlander films (I don't think I ever saw the [2nd?] one that was in the future); and I'm still a bit bummed that they tied in the TV series in the final movie and had Christopher Lambert defer to Adrian Paul 😛

out of curiosity, what does "private cloud" mean in this context? like, giving extra money to a cloud provider so nobody else's VMs are on the hardware? or is it just a fancy phrase for their own "data center"?

again: "so far".
But if those bipartisan measures succeed (and I really hope, along with you & the tech companies, that they absolutely do not), then they'll open the door for e.g. law-enforcement to go directly to ISPs & data services demanding info: which Google will have in spades.
Of course, maybe I'm wrong: maybe they'll just pay for Google AI to tell them who all the "criminals" are 😝

Lauren, it's precisely because we're teetering that this is so alarming: do you really think Google can't be compelled to hand over a list to law enforcement of who's e.g. in Texas and been searching for abortion providers or abortifacients?
that much personal information, collected in one place, sold/shown to anyone else or not, is too much.

what does that entail, exactly? are you having to tear out drywall? or are you pulling new wires through the walls via the old? Is it just the wiring, or are you trying to drop new power sockets/ethernet ports/etc?
