way back when i used to subscribe to zines and magazines, the first thing i always read were the letters sections. of particular interest were threads the spanned multiple issues
i've blogged a lot over the years and have never been able to get comments working like that

i eventually figured out how to do it, but i'm not new to my devices. been using apple devices since 1986! i used to do systems administration. and i had to resort to a web search to figure out the most basic of things. it gest better...
i had already done the web search before posting, and it was apple's support pages that made me surrender, because they said, to airplay from ipad "open apple music, podcast, or other audio app" which implies that non-audio apps like safari can't do it

2025-06-16 03:29:42 UTC

apple homepods are worse than sonos which was terrible
it is not possible to send audio to homepods outside of apple music and podcast apps
for example, i'm playing music on safari ipad and it is not possible to send audio to my $300 dollar homepod
fucking unbelievable

i am going to greece next week. i will be deleting social media, email, and messaging apps from my devices for the duration. i will be reviewing photos, files, and everything to make sure i have nothing obviously political or critical of what's happening. i will clear all browser history and caches. i will also be disabled facial recognition
never before have i been concerned about leaving or entering through US border patrol. but i am heavily tattooed and moderately pierced, all my clothes are black. i have a mildly freakish hippie goatee (i would shave it off but since i can't hide my facial tats or giant ear plugs, i don't think it will help)
honestly, i don't want to go, but it's a family trip that was planned long ago
i even plan to delete this message
i do not think i am over-reacting

long shot request for help
a couple weeks back i stumbled on a website. a guy makes custom and one-off audio pedals (some guitar, some for other purposes) and sells them. he had at least a couple dozen different devices for sale, maybe more. they all look home-made
i recall that only a handful of the devices were guitar pedals, but a search for those brough me to his page
one of his devices was a hand-held thing that picks up electrical and/or magnetic waves. the idea is to walk around city streets and pick all kinds of weird sounds from around you
i thought i bookmarked the site, but did not. can't find it in my history
maybe using the initials LS?
finally, of copurse,if you know of anyone else making and selling things like this i'd love to know about them

this makes me crazy. i build websites (mostly wordpress) and i have never found a single reliable all-purpose browser
since i'm an apple guy, Safari aint bad
FF was my primary but not no more. LibreWolf and WaterFox break on too many sites for me
Vivaldi is my favorite chrome browser. not perfect but pretty good
but truly, the situation is bizarre. for writing, notes, tasks, music, and many other purposes, there are a multitude of apps to choose from. but web browsers/browsing mostly sucks

was just at an auto glass garage. #TripleCanopy (#Blackwater) security guy walks in and pushes past people waiting in line. he's upset because someone smashed his window "JUST NOW." wants preferred treatment. woman behind the desk wasn't having it
i'm sure i'm the only one in the room who knows who these people are (fascist mercs). this is the company protecting Musk and preventing congress people from entering govt buildings
my heart rate spiked and i wanted to scream and smash more of his windows
why are these fuckers in my town right now? i presume whoever smashed their window knows who they are

ever tried copying text from a #PDF file? what a shit show. the resulting text is usually so garbled, it takes more time to edit than to type it yourself
thankfully, there is a new solution: take a screen shot of the pdf, then simply copy the text from the picture. OCR has improved to the point that PDFs are now obsolete
i'm seriously think of asking my #LitJournal contributors to send me PNGs of their poetry instead of PDFs

2024-12-19 04:57:07 UTC

ok so we all (mostly) agree that stories is it. what we crave. what drives everything. we need stories. we are addicted to stories. they drive everything. even drugs. we do them because of what they tell us, true or not
but what i want to know is why?
is it really just chemistry?
iow, do we (i) have any agency?
iow, how is addiction different from interest or curiosity?
how is reading the news different from spiking my arm?

mastodon meets my immediate personal needs but it looks like bluesky is going to be a better platform to promote my lit journals
i *liked* that twitter used to be a centralized public square, but i think we've all realized that that model isn't sustainable for too many reasons to list
community is what i'm looking for above all else, and using different services for different purposes (communities) is the way

2024-11-22 18:24:08 UTC

i’ve always said i understand the subscription model for software, so i subscribe to many apps
in moving away from mainstream/legacy media, i’m subscribing to many independent smaller sites (404 media for example), and a few individual journalist's newsletters
but now i'm drowning in monthly and annual subscription fees. it’s becoming difficult to keep track and impossible to afford
this is not sustainable and i can't imagine a solution
