Thinking about this post, there's a lot there. As far as I know, kids are not in greater danger from deliberate attacks by kids or adults than they used to be (but that's affected by the issue in the post, naturally).
We definitely *hear* about everything bad more than we used to.
There are of course more cars than there once were.
Expected parental behaviour has changed: if you are a parent, imagine something bad happens to your 8 year old a mile from home. Of course you would feel terrible, but also you would fully expect your fitness as a parent to be absolutely slated.
And kid ability has gone down - can an average 8 year old navigate a mile from home confidently even though they've never been allowed to before?
I don't know how we "re-wild" kids as a whole without just pulling a "didn't do us any harm" and denying responsibility.

Whatever you put in, it says "soup".

That idea that there are the Real Guys who know what they're doing is horribly pernicious in my mind. I have had the experience of being in a room where someone said, "fortunately we have an expert to help us resolve this" and thinking "oh thank fuck", then realising they were referring to me.
On the flip side of that, some of the more productive conversations I've had are when I got open and technical with someone who would count as several rungs higher up because I simply had no idea who they were - social obliviousness can be a boon!

@nprofile…7ppx a quote I love is "quantity has a quality all of its own". Take a big enough pile of data and you can extract all kinds of surprising things. This feels like a counterpart to it.
The classic slasher trope of young couple meeting an untimely end while getting amorous is a great example: narratively you just need a reason for them to be (a) isolated and (b) distracted. Societally you don't notice the sex=death message, or that they're all heterosexual and white because that's the water you swim in. It's only once it becomes a cliché that you can draw (quasi) statistical conclusions.

When I think about what the social internet is, which for me goes back to IRC and COMMODE and ICQ, I go back to that Steve Jobs bit on computers, "it's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds". I think that being able to reach out and talk to and listen to people that aren't you, that aren't like you, can be a bicycle for empathy in a similar way to reading novels and biographies.
Modern capitalist computers are no more a bicycle for the mind than surveillance networks are a bicycle for empathy, of course. But if we think about how things *could be*, we have a direction, even if we never actually finish the journey.

I try to tell our younger devs they should care about one layer above and one layer below the thing that they're actually working on. What's the platform your code runs on, and what does the thing that calls your code actually need to do, for example. Or how does the TLS connection get to your server, and how does it talk to the database.
You can't be an expert in everything, so one-up, one-down is a way to focus and ration your attention.

Grab a couple of dice. Roll them.
If you get below 5, those are rookie numbers. Shout at the dice, let them know they're underperforming.
If you get above 9, that's what we want to see! They're good dice, and you should acknowledge that.
Repeat that and keep a record. You'll notice that negative feedback often results in better performance on the next roll. Positive feedback, conversely, can make them get lazy.
