Hmm, that might explain why they haven't published their source code as they promised.
I mean, there IS a repo for it on GitHub — but it's over a month old, was already outdated at the time of release, and hasn't been updated since.

Asymmetric cryptography is nice, and honestly, I think there are few (if any) technical reasons why they shouldn't be the default everywhere on the Internet — but let's not pretend that they somehow guarantee freedom of speech.
Twitter or Facebook could allow you to sign in with a keypair tomorrow, and they could still block your public key by its fingerprint. Your favorite Nostr relay could simply stop accepting messages from your pubkey tomorrow.
Freedom of speech is a social contract, not a technical one. It requires that everyone be at least willing to process your thoughts, no matter how offensive they might find them, without wanting to ban you just for uttering them.

Yup, that's the most difficult truth to accept about Nostr — that it'll likely never be anywhere near as popular as any of the centralized platforms, because most people actually WANT to live in echo chambers and go to war with the people who disagree with them.

2026-10-08 18:53:37 UTC

This is precisely why I'm cautious whenever someone asks how we can get more people to join Nostr. You'd THINK these people are interested in censorship-free platforms because they don't like some of the terms that Discord is imposing on them. But no – they actually love censorship. They just want to be the ones in charge of it.

2026-10-08 15:15:18 UTC

- reply

That's precisely the problem — as much as people love to complain about censorship, most of them actually like it, as long as it happens to someone they don't like.
And if it happens to them, the solution they want to see is not a platform that gets rid of it, but one that allows THEM to ban or punish the people that banned them (see Twitter).
The fact of the matter is that most people simply aren't ready for a censorship-free platform. Those people have no need for Nostr, and we wouldn't want them here anyways.

I'm sorry, but this entire discussion is missing the point. "Security by obscurity" refers to the practice of keeping the implementation details hidden, not just the key.
The Enigma machine was a great example of this: despite being very good for its time (for years, the Allies only ever managed to decipher a handful of mostly useless messages without knowing its interior workings), once they came into possession of one, they managed to find the fatal flaw in its design within weeks and were able to decrypt all further communication with relative ease.
Modern algorithms like AES, RSA, ECC, etc. don't have this issue — their designs have been openly published for decades, and yet no viable attack has been found that beats random guessing.
OF COURSE they still involve the use of obscurity, if you will, because the protection offered by the algorithm is only as strong as the key is secret. But, unlike with the Enigma, the key is the only part that has to be kept a secret.

I really hope I’m not being annoying, because I appreciate the work that you do, but I also seem to have a talent for finding bugs.
Here’s one: on the iOS app, when you tap on a note to open it (so you can read the comments, perhaps), the on-screen keyboard immediately pops up, obscuring at least 1/3rd of the entire screen (which I’d rather use to read the note or comments).
This appears to be because Nostrich programmatically focuses the comment input box as soon as the note opens. Should be an easy fix that would improve usability tremendously.
Also, perhaps a good chance to flex those OTA updates 😉

Okay, so the problem occurs in the dialog that pops up when you click the speech bubble underneath a text note.
Attach a large-ish picture, and write a long enough comment, and the "Post" button gets pushed below the viewport, without adding a scrollable element in order to reach it.

The one that prompted @npub1sg6…f63m to implement georelays last year? I do.
I mean, as annoying as it is, he IS doing everyone a favor by demonstrating how easy it is to abuse the protocol if you have ill intent, and he is spending his own money to do so.
While I suppose it probably hasn't cost him more than a couple hundred bucks in AI credits and VPS hosting to do so, consider the implication if a state actor decided to shut it down. They could simply spam every channel with hundreds of fake discussions disseminating propaganda, fake news, and whatnot.
The only way to avoid that would be using persistent identities and filtering out anyone who's not on your contact list, or relying on Bluetooth meshing exclusively.

Bitchat supports Bluetooth meshing but it's not an issue there since that needs local proximity. This only affects relay-hosted chats.

Yes but clients only have the npub as a unique identifier to go by, and the bot changes that constantly.

2026-09-20 07:32:42 UTC

- reply

I mean, you COULD turn off georelays for NYM and just use a small list of hand-picked relays that at least enforce IP rate limits, but that would obviously impact interoperability with Bitchat.

2026-09-20 07:29:41 UTC

- reply

Bitchat uses ephemeral messages, relays do not store them in their DB. They only cache them in memory for a few minutes, long enough to potentially enforce an IP rate limit, but that's about it.

2026-09-20 07:14:52 UTC

Hey @npub17fe…nzuc, I'd like to report a bug. When using the comment editor, when you attach an image and enough text to push the "Post" button below the browser's viewport, there is no way to submit it, because the dialog doesn't scroll (the textbox will if you write enough in there, but the button itself remains unreachable).

2026-09-20 07:06:55 UTC

- reply

Basically, it spams every channel with verbal abuse using multiple identities with constantly changing keys, to the point of having vaguely non-sequitur "discussions" with itself. Pretty sure this is all the same guy. Currently he seems to be using variations of Gustavus a lot, but that changes too.
It was even using vanity keys for a while (npubs whose hex representation ends on 4 of the same digit), suggesting that whoever is doing this knows the protocol fairly well.
https://blossom.jumble.social/ade544fe60947d264e076b74e2dae97344c4d64bb9267b8405066798b81586c7.png

2026-09-20 06:41:32 UTC

- reply

Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Bitchat is permissionless, so there is not banning or kicking users. On top of that, the bot generates new nPubs constantly to circumvent users muting it. It even does PoW to avoid being filtered that way, and the content is clearly AI generated, so there is no distinct word pattern that could be used to detect it. And since the messages travel via relays, you can't block its IP address either (which would be trivial to circumvent using VPNs anyways).
Someone is spending quite a bit of effort and compute time to make using Bitchat as annoying as possible.

I don't work there, but I took a look at the source code and it appears that the dialog originates from here: https://github.com/PrimalHQ/primal-web-app/blob/870666becfa9e0e3adf0d7322e2ad788c799f3f1/src/contexts/AccountContext.tsx#L1049-L1055
Judging from the if-clause a few lines earlier, it does indeed check whether your updated follower list only has one account on it, and will display this dialog if it does. As to why that might happen, my best guess would be that the relay somehow returned an empty follow list.
Not sure what the best way to fix it is, since apparently this DOES sometimes happen. Perhaps a less confusing message and different options would be helpful. I'm thinking something along the lines of "Something went wrong fetching your follower list" with the options of "Try again" and "Cancel".

I mean, you’re not wrong, but this is literally the first thing anyone does when building a new compiler or OS, so it’s only fair you’d do the same.
Still, it’s a great accomplishment, because it separates the men from the boys (and the tools from the toys).
