We are moving to a rolling disclosure model now

2026-10-18 19:55:11 UTC

I think we are slowly realizing there is a huge drift in the FOSS space.
There are people that want to do cool shit with their community together and the social aspect is the important part
And then there are some that only want to create things for users and they don't care about the community aspect
And then there are the ones that only do it for the fame and don't care either about the project nor the people
And then we have a lot of folks that are somewhere between those extremes.

Not sure I agree with pausing the conversation for 24 hours is the wrong move there.
Having those discussions is difficult and hard and without proper moderation and people that genuinely want this to be constructive it's not going to be a great discussion.
There were far-right trolls on that thread, which I'd consider bad faith attempts at derailing. So something had to be done in regards to that at least.
Though I dislike the messaging there.

2026-09-21 22:42:28 UTC

Consensus finding 101:
If something disagrees with my opinion and I don't have valid arguments against it it's political and outside of the scope of this discussion.
If something disagrees with my opinion, but I have "good" arguments against it, it's in scope, but I win the argument.
No matter what I win. That's how we create consensus these days.

What is interesting though that the temperature sensor jumps sometimes really really weirdly... Like..
The CPU isn't doing anything, just idling...
and then sometimes 45ºC -> 103ºC -> 45ºC within a second?
And nothing is going on at all on the system?
I'd just assume that sometimes this trips over some thermal protection thing in the CPU maybe?

so a wrong vbios could e.g. inverse the applied voltage and lead to instabilities... one really shouldn't mess with those things ans especially not tell others they are interchangeable...

2026-07-16 01:44:44 UTC

- reply

on nvidia the VBIOS also encodes: perf levels, voltage curves for clocks, voltage controller configs (which GPIOs to hit or how the PWM ones are set up), connectors (including eDP), GPIOs (for e.g. signalling power alerts to the GPU), power sensors, power budgets, thermal limits, etc...
it just contains about everything that could be product specific
It even contains a device specific initialization script that e.g. setups thermal emergency shutdown thresholds

2026-07-16 01:37:42 UTC

- reply

people still claim that GPU *BIOS doesn't contain board specific stuff? oh wow...
On nvidia each VBIOS really is product specific (not model, not chipset, but product specific)
So you can't really expect a random one from the same GPU "model" to just work unless you get lucky

2026-07-04 11:32:12 UTC

2026-03-22 22:32:17 UTC

- reply

I can also do it manually, because with HDR that's at least standardized, so I don't even need to fiddle with ddc.
Just wished there is something that could reduce the brightness automatically depending on time or something if no light sensor is available.
But it's also a laptop so a sensor should be somewhere, it's probably just not wired up.

2026-03-22 17:27:23 UTC

Now if I could make my displays brightness adjust to the brightness of my room or at least the time, that would be really great!

it's great for driver development though... I have my eGPU set up in a way, that I can unload the GPU driver any moment and power cycle the case without rebooting!
So that's kinda working, but yeah.. do not unplug the cable 🙃

- reply

The horrors of fixing the mess...
though at least through runtime power management it _might_ be doable already, just requires Userspace to do a thingy 🙃 and most people plug their displays on the discrete GPU anyway (or don't even have an iGPU in the first place)...
_but_ we also already have eGPUs and that's already a huge dumpster fire.

2026-03-12 14:33:20 UTC

- reply

yeah, doing that in Userspace does sound like a good approach here if we'd need to rely on databases. If it's a standardized interface doing it in the kernel might be good enough + adding quirks for hardware where it doesn't.
But I'm now more surprised that this hasn't happened yet and I'm wondering why.

2026-03-12 14:25:33 UTC

- reply

okay interesting, that one indeed seems to work on the display I've used previously.
So now I'm wondering why it's not really set up for Linux desktops to use, or why there isn't a sysfs backlight device entry for this?
Or is the problem that you need a database of supported displays and it's all custom per device?

2026-03-12 14:12:11 UTC

- reply

interesting.. and that just works properly out of the box on linux desktop systems?

2026-03-12 14:08:30 UTC

- reply

yeah.. but I have rarely seen it used by external DisplayPort displays outside of OLED, but maybe I just got very unlucky?

2026-03-12 11:09:47 UTC

- reply

Well, laptop displays generally do have interfaces (ACPI/WMI/GPU/custom, it's a disaster) for the brightness, just external displays didn't really. But you should be able to tell if the image just gets darker or if there is less light.
I think OLED displays also have a standard interface for brightness? Not quite sure.

2026-03-12 00:27:53 UTC

The biggest killer feature of HDR is to have finally working brightness controls for displays 🙃

2026-03-07 17:51:30 UTC

Honest question: why are we still defaulting to swap partitions in Linux distributions?

2026-03-04 23:14:50 UTC

the sad truth is, that people don't care about the girls that died, but only about trash talking the US and that's the only reason people talk about them.
And please don't bother pretending that's not the case. You didn't care about a single Iranian life before the war. You haven't even bothered listening to any Iranian person.
I'm just disappointed by the hypocrisy and the instrumentalization of lives and deaths.
We should do better.

2026-02-18 16:09:27 UTC

The part of "you're right" that is off putting isn't because it's a clear indications that it's written by AI, but rather that we as a community feel disturbed by somebody acknowledging having said something wrong or doing mistakes.

2025-12-15 21:17:36 UTC

"Member of far-right AfD party charged with making Nazi salute at Reichstag"
Right members of the "totally not a nazi party" party, are making a "totally not a nazi salute" salute.
Hopefully folks manage to ban that party before it's too late 🙃

some people certainly do, and it's often from the MAGA/Linux crowd
Like I've seen forks happening, because they didn't agree with projects advocating for respecting basic human rights and do it only based on culture war reasons.
That's out of malice, because the inherent goal is to divide the community by claiming other reasons for their forks.
It happened in the past and it will happen in the future.

2025-11-29 23:17:13 UTC

- reply

Claiming that systemd is bad because of "being monolithic" or "not the UNIX way" or whatever random nonsense reason you come up with is all a political game whose purpose is to divide us.
All those have _zero_ relevance. You are just made to believe they matter, even though they absolutely don't.
Focus on the real technical problems, limitations, drawbacks. Not some artificial "tech ideals" that have no relevance.

2025-11-29 23:12:46 UTC

- reply

You think it's a coincidence that 90% of the anti-systemd distros are lead by absolute shitheads? Think again...

2025-11-29 23:12:00 UTC

- reply

Every accusation of them is a self-revelation. Period. Every. Single. One.
Also they weaponize political ideals to harm them. Things like "neutrality", or "everybody is welcomed" or "tolerance" you name it. They use those terms to undermine the ideals behind them and sow disagreement on purpose.
Every technical disagreement is weaponized to not let us focus on the important things. And yes, most of the anti-whatever sentiments are reinforced by them.
Don't fall for it.

2025-11-29 23:06:12 UTC

So some people are wondering if whatever the MAGA/Linux crowed is up to is planned and on purpose.
Yes, it is. They accuse us of what they would be doing themselves. Wayland, systemd, etc.. it's all a conspiracy to them _because_ it's the way the approach things and accuse us of the same.
They always weaponize disagreements within the broader community for their political agendas. Every project of them is like this.
It's sad to see how many do not understand those dynamics.

2025-09-14 11:19:48 UTC

If you want to follow people for their tech, you also have to follow them for their cringe

2025-09-08 02:05:30 UTC

ah yeah, fair, somehow my tired brain wasn't able to parse that out 🙃

2025-09-08 01:55:56 UTC

I just hope they learn that wasting political capital like this isn't worth it. But also "just following orders" wasn't and never will be a valid excuse.
Like they had to decide that enforcing a rule, which they don't have to begin with, in this particular case is worth it.
Sure individuals might not want to risk their job and all that, I get it, but getting fired over this would be ridiculous.
Like just say there was more important things to do or something 🙃

I was wondering for a while how I can put the "objective arguments are a lie" in nice words, but I think I kinda figured it out.
What persuades people to accept your technical position aren't your "objective" arguments, it's the trust relationship between you.
If you don't trust each other, you won't trust your arguments anyway, no matter how good or right they are.
And now go wonder why arguments in FOSS spaces are always a disaster if there is a strong hostility between the groups.

2025-03-08 20:18:11 UTC

- reply

yeah.. so "if the driver is broken and you got RCE you can also exploit the HCI interface on the device" but at that point.. you already got full access so whatever.
Anyway.. "Chinese vendor put a backdoor into billion of devices" is sure good clickbait.

2025-03-08 18:41:35 UTC

Soo uhm... the recent esp32 bluetooth "backdoor" stuff kinda smells like a nothinbgurger and people jumping on it because of Sinophobia...
maybe I'm wrong, but uhm.. it feels like it's just a lot of noise about something nobody will talk about in a week after some clarification were published explaining why it's not an issue at all.
So they issue commands the way drivers do and it looks like debugging features?
Could be exploited by a broken bluetooth driver, but what else?

I'm formally stepping down as a nouveau kernel maintainer.
I want to stress out this is only for the kernel side of things and has and will not have any impact on my involvement in mesa.
Don't really want to add too much here, just that things need to change. Recent events (tm) is just another example of the deep disagreement.
I won't be able to convince people I made up my mind on my own here, so I won't bother with it anyway.

luckily I didn't have to deal with those users, but it's also sad if I have to tell users that their software is very outdated and that I can't help them and it's up to debian to do the work. 😢
Even more sad if debian devs don't do anything, because they don't have the devs and time to look into what to backport, etc....

2025-01-03 23:08:23 UTC

Soo.. I think I've implemented SVM in rusticl properly and the supported drivers are iris (Intel), radeonsi (AMD) and llvmpipe (CPU).
This also means you can have a context with Intel and AMD GPUs in them and SVM works properly across them all.
Which also means this is the first OpenCL implementation supporting SVM across vendors? Are there any others?
Just need to clean up that mess and merge it tho.

2024-12-10 00:55:05 UTC

we slowly reach the point where "AI advocates" need to be added to list of what constitutes being a "climate change denier".
AI leads to big data centers being build, which leads to massively higher power consumption, which means we get off carbon slower.
And the "counter argument" is that the benefits of AI will offset any damage done by climate change, which is simply 1. wishful thinking and 2. untrue.
It's just techbro culture at this point.

2024-10-29 10:37:58 UTC

The removal of Russian linux maintainers working for sanctioned companies is a prime example of how one creates collective trauma by not being careful on how to convey the message proper.
The messaging were terrible, yes, a lot of people understood immediately why it happened, no, you can't look at it rationally and say "people will know". Your own collective trauma stood in the way.
Some people lost trust, others feel deeply betrayed, not due to the step itself, but by the way it was done.

2024-09-03 08:01:54 UTC

I was following the debate just briefly, but one argument brought up against rust did strike me a bit:
"rust is just like java being a hip language nobody cares about in the future" (I've seen various variants of that one)
Which... is kinda weird, because that tells me those things:
1. you don't know what happens outside your bubble
2. you never bothered learning java
3. you never bothered learning rust
And besides, Java is probably more used in engineering than C.

oh sure, I was just curious, because I haven't considered that to be a problem at all.
But yeah.. the recovery path being accessible on macos sounds like an important feature, even if that's just a side effect.
However there are people working on using a slim Linux boot environment instead of grub, so that could also solve this issue, but I've heard that the kexec way of doing things doesn't work on apple silicon devices.

2024-08-19 10:11:52 UTC

so that would mean that grub needs to become accessible in order to catch up, or does it already have accessibility features (though I think I already know the answer).

As people seem to discuss Code of Conduct stuff again, please keep in mind that decisions are normally not purely made based on specific "wrong doings" or "having the wrong opinion".
What matters as well is how one behaves if confronted about things and if a constructive and reasonable discussion is possible with the person in question.
Reasonable people are entirely fine with having those discussions and we can together find a path forward and figure something out working for everybody.
