Due to the lack of available water, the Washington Department of Ecology is ordering a halt to surface water use from the Yakima River Basin from October 6, 2025 through the end of the month. The department estimates the restrictions may affect more than 1,500 water rights holders. Through a series of public records requests, Cascade PBS and KNKX obtained thousands of pages of ChatGPT conversation logs from city officials in Washington. In addition to drafting mayoral letters, officials have asked ChatGPT to generate social media posts, policy documents, talking points, speeches, press releases, responses to audit recommendations, application materials for grants and replies to constituents’ emails. https://www.cascadepbs.org/news/2025/08/wa-city-officials-are-using-chatgpt-to-write-government-documents/

Pike Place Market's car-free experiment has been receiving positive feedback - and now, the famous Seattle attraction is extending the restriction on vehicular traffic through next spring to study how the restrictions play out during the quieter winter months. #seattle https://www.cascadepbs.org/news/2025/07/pike-place-market-car-ban-extended-amid-uptick-in-foot-traffic/

This morning, seismic monitors detected an earthquake swarm at Mount Rainier. USGS says there is no indication that the swarm is a cause for concern, but rather typical background levels of activity for the mountain.
However, it's a great reminder that we live in a very volcanic region, and there are resources to help you be prepared for the event of an earthquake and/or eruption.

Earlier this month, a federal judge ordered the State Department to allow people to self-select the sex displayed on their passport, in a lawsuit challenging a Trump executive order requiring federal identification documents to reflect one’s biological sex at conception. Since then, some trans Seattleites have been trying to seize the opportunity to update the gender markers on their passports - but have so far been unsuccessful. https://www.cascadepbs.org/politics/2025/06/despite-federal-ruling-trans-seattleites-cant-update-passports/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=meta&utm_campaign=programming&utm_content=news-article

The average PBS station gets about 16% of its funding from federal sources - but some public media stations, particularly in rural areas, rely on federal funding for more than half their budget. We spoke with PBS CEO Paula Kerger about the possible end of funding to public media stations, how public funding works, and how PBS might be affected by cuts. https://www.cascadepbs.org/news/2025/06/pbs-ceo-paula-kerger-talks-potential-federal-cuts-whats-at-stake/

Since March, protesters have gathered at Tesla dealerships in University Village, South Lake Union, Bellevue Square, Tacoma and Lynnwood. Their posters decry topics ranging from the administration's executive orders cutting science, health and education programs, to the increased emphasis on arresting undocumented people - but many of the signs target Elon Musk specifically. https://www.cascadepbs.org/news/2025/05/washington-state-falling-out-love-tesla

REI Co-op members voted to reject the slate of candidates put forward by the outdoor retailer in this year's Board of Directors elections, representing a victory for the REI Union, which urged members to vote against the uncontested slate of board candidates to protest REI's decision to block two union-backed candidates from the ballot. https://www.cascadepbs.org/news/2025/05/rei-co-op-members-reject-company-board-picks-after-union-campaign

Last July, the U.S. and Canada reached an agreement in principle to manage the Columbia River, negotiating for six years to update the 60-year-old treaty.
