That 91% cheating rate is why the teachers I know rely on in-person work for grades now:

A look at how basically any website now has to deal with threats which previously were mostly limited to industries like commerce:

“It would be good to find a more lasting solution before the entire Internet is driven behind defensive walls, and the open network that inspired so much creativity is lost. The industry that is driving these attacks seems entirely at ease with turning independent web sites into smoking craters after having pillaged their contents — an attitude that extends to the planet and its economies as well. Some of us, though, object to that idea and will fight against it.”

Looking for recommendations for an 11 year-old who’s just suddenly developed a taste for serious books. He liked The Martian and Artemis, and would like recommendations for more plot-first, fast paced books.

“The reels of film were old and battered and no one knew what was on them.
They were from before World War I and had been shuttled around from basements to barns to garages and had just been dropped off at the Library. There were about 10 of them and they were rusted. Some were misshapen. The nitrate film stock had crumbled to bits on some; other strips were stuck together.
The librarians peeled them apart and gently looked them over, frame by frame…”

@nprofile…tkx6 @nprofile…rqx4 It's especially interesting given how Microsoft and Google raised prices to pay for those features—how entitled do you have to be to raise everyone's bill by ⅓ and expect them to thank you?

@nprofile…tkx6 @nprofile…93tu I'm trying look at it from the perspective of wanting future advocacy to be more effective. I'm not sure what the right form of advocacy is at the moment but there are more people who are reconsidering their relationship with the tech industry so I really want someone to hit on a message which resonates more broadly than those of us who've been talking about it since the 90s. It really feels like we're at a moment where that's possible.

2026-01-20 21:03:12 UTC

@nprofile…tkx6 yes, we can't say he should have fixed the industry but it's more than that we were “brainwashed”. A lot of mindshare was squandered without strategy, leaving a generation of OSS developers seeing the FSF as irrelevant or unrealistic. If I had to make an analogy, it'd be like looking at the number of people I know who adopted veganism _despite_ PETA rather than because of their advocacy.
And, yes, we all should have done more. I've found it depressing to ask how feasible that is now.

2026-01-20 20:43:34 UTC

@nprofile…tkx6 I have complicated feelings about that. Thinking about why I stopped donating to the FSF, it wasn't because I disagreed with a lot of the bigger picture but because it was kind of run as a lark for RMS which didn't seem to be focused on actually getting results. RMS felt like kind of a tragic figure even before the skeevy behaviour came to light.

“Incredibly, scientists were able to sequence the genome of the rhino, which revealed that this individual still had a high level of genetic diversity in its lineage, and no signs of inbreeding. Considering that woolly rhinos vanished from the fossil record around 14,000 years ago, this study suggests that they may have experienced a very sudden population collapse, rather than a gradual demise.”

“Some hold down second or even third jobs to survive, despite working full-time at one of the UK’s most prestigious cultural institutions. Nicholas told me that he spoke to one worker during the last round of strikes who had to leave the picket line to go straight to her evening shift. Others are so exhausted they “go and find a sofa to sleep on” during breaks. Several told the union they had turned to food banks.”

@nprofile…cg79 I found this so offensive as a young nerd, but at the time I assumed the people at the top would put an end to it if they knew. Direct experience with C-level types disabused me of that notion: it’s fake-it-til-you-make it all the way down with a handful of exceptions.

@nprofile…m624 Yeah, I was thinking it's a really tricky skill to develop since it requires nuance and realistic awareness of your limitations. Especially younger developers are going to have trouble around things like “just because it's popular doesn't mean it's the right choice for you” or appreciating the weight of maintenance chores.

2025-01-24 14:24:11 UTC

@nprofile…m624 I feel this a lot, but I also remember tons of security or Unicode-related bugs caused by people doing that, some of which are hard to fix if Hyrum’s law kicked in, and LLMs can make this worse since they don’t understand the problem domain.
It feels like a great expansion of this would be helping developers calibrate their threshold for doing this – e.g. terminal size=safe, OIDC=risky (last week I saw a auth bypass) – and sharing the long-term results to help educate the field.
