How do you fight back against the #SurveillanceState, propped up by #SurveillanceCapital? Easy, you fight fire with fire - digital with digital.
A device such as this can be very useful for journalists, political dissidents and people fighting against oppression.

NixOS can be configured properly and be super hardened - but you have to cross your T's and dot your i's.
This means that you (not the AI, not alone at least) need to make sure your flakes are properly written, that there is no room for mistakes and that you limit operational ability of your nix clojures or NixOS as a whole in order to exclude variables.
I'm gonna start doing this myself soon, as an experiment, to see how secure I can make it.

In comes @npub1wr3…lp6a with the #SecurityThroughObscurity argument that the #SiliconValley barons have been promoting for decades now.
But what he's suggesting isn't actually wrong. You should use a #Linux distro that is properly preconfigured and vetted by a community.
This is why #Arch or #NixOS shouldn't be your first recommendation for newcomers.
In fact, if we are to go by high security standards, your first distro should be an immutable one like #Bazzite or #Silverblue.

Murdering children and watching them die is something the #IDF does as a sport. There are many, many videos that prove this and you kind of get desensitized to it. Remember that the majority of people in #Gaza are actual children - or as #Netenyahu calls them: "human shields", possibly also "target practice".

they realized too late that the Nazis were a mongrel horde, who knew nothing of Norwegian culture, heritage or values - that they only looked up to the Vikings, the fedualists, the imperialists - that they came to destroy our culture.
Tears ran down their faces when they stood in the crowd and heard their countrymen say with their heads held high: "do not cry for me, for I know Norway will be free after I am dead", as the Nazis gave them their last words before execution.

when the Nazis came for #Norway, they swore they were here to protect us from the "Jew problem". Some Norwegians swallowed it and welcomed them with open arms.
They thought differently however, after they had seen children as young as 4 years old executed in the streets by gunfire, people being sent to slave farms in the valleys, along with POWs from Russian
They realized too late that they could be sent to those farms, if they were caught with an illegal recording of "negro music"

it's fascist. Americans sometimes fail to learn from European history, especially with the latest "global strategy" manual from the state department.
Europe has ALWAYS been multicultural. It's only when the same conditions arise that the cultures need to be subverted, subjugated and destroyed.
European imperialism was perfected inside Europe, against other Europeans and was fascist by design. Cultures, languages, morals, traditions, it all had to be destroyed to consolidate power.

honestly, the western conservatives pussy footing with white supremacists has lead to this.
There's a reason why Ben Shapiro suddenly works for a big media corporation, the very same one he has vilified for years.
That's because the alt right is now thoroughly white supremacist, combined with Christian nationalists, who all espouse the "Jew problem" in dog whistles.
The Australian conservatives are not exempt from this distinction, because they too have been using the same tactic.

Another one! Wheeeeeeee and let me add to it.
#NixOS will probably be great - 10 years down the line - as the Nix community has to both maintain a massive assortment of packages WHILE refactoring #Nix & #Nixpkgs according to their RFCs.
I think the idea is to take enough functionality out of nix and into nixpkgs, to the point where they can offer an enterprise edition of nixpkgs. #Flakes also needs to be replaced, apparently.

So if we really believe in a free market, we should believe that markets being made cannot be free, for the user, the producer or the publisher. They can verily be systems that are predatory and exploitative of one or more parts.
We cannot exploit the user, the creator or the publisher. This cannot be overstated. In the west it's gotten too normal to centralise ownership and to exploit people. This is something we have to be mindful of.

The big iffy issue about algorithms is how it gives vendors too much power. Basically a vendor can "play favorites" and prevent certain content creators from being discovered, or push their favorites.
Consider how vendors like YouTube and Instagram started to push the creators they wanted you to see - despite what the user might want to see.
In essence, my biggest reason for client side algorithms is to take that power out of the vendors hands.

I think "the other side" has valid points, and that's why I'm thinking of client-side discovery algorithms - but it's not an easy problem.
If the client is the one who is doing the sorting and selecting, it means the server will have to distribute MASSIVE amounts of data all the time to clients so that user preferences can be widdled down on the users side.
But is there a middle way? Can the task be split up so that some if not all privacy is maintained?

Unfortunately I don't know if anyone else is talking about this, mostly because one side is against #DiscoveryAlgorithms since they feel typical sorting functions should be enough, and the other side thinks that letting clients handle it would mean too much complexity and bandwidth usage.
There are also those who hate any form of algorithms spreading content at all, and those who want their algorithm to be secret sauce.

The #fediverse needs to come to terms with one thing: on content platforms, chronological ordering is probably good for your subscription feeds, but for the #discovery feed the average user actually WANTS an #algorithm.
Instead of kicking your feet in anger, release your anxiety and think for one moment.
Wouldn't it be better to formalize #discovery algorithms as #opensource? To create programmable interfaces server side so that the user can define their algorithm client side?

but the absolute best thing would be not to share music across the #fediverse, because that would be illegal, but to create some sort of shared statistical engine for use in creating playlists.
So #Funkwhale should really start figuring out a way towards disseminating plays across #ActivityPub, not for social interaction, but merely for dispersal of statistical data.
This could help private cloud music services to get algorithms in place so they too can have "Discovery" features.

so let's say you put $20 into a wallet each month. That means you have $20 to listen for. You can add more, or less even.
For each playable second you pay $0.05, which isn't a whole heckin lot, but could basically add up if you stream a lot.
You'd also have to by default not continuously be playing music, or you'd drain the user of their funds.
But yeah, you see the problem. Falling asleep and suddenly you've spent all your money on some random playlist lol.

The biggest idea I've ever had in regards to this, whereby "big" means costly in regards to organizational power, lawyer fees, etc is actually letting the user pay-per-listen - i.e the service would be counting each playable minute to sum up with a lump sum who you've been listening to.
Right now it's statistically rounding up who percentage wise has been played the most and then the terms of agreement duely apply, which has been mediated between big publishers and big streaming.

then I'm thinking of reselling this service to certain records shops or even music venues so that they can host their own music platform.
That might be the revolution we all need. Nobody's gonna make any money off publishing, but at least you take it away from the likes of #Spotify and #Tidal who will actively try to fool you into giving more money to them and theirs than to the human artists and musicians you'd want to support.

Honestly, lately I've been thinking of creating middleware - or integration - for #Funkwhale to interface with PRO's (or "Performing Rights Organizations").
In Norway we have TONO, which takes something like 5 Norwegian cent per minute played + yearly costs.
You read that right, I am thinking of starting my own streaming service using #Funkwhale lol
It basically means that I'll hopefully get to cover the costs if I get enough users a month.

I feel like I'm just not helping :/
This guy I talked to the other day set up his own private #Funkwhale, which he used as a cloud media player.
Buying albums, EP's and singles to then put it up in a private cloud storage is the ethical way to stream music.
I know, I know. It's not the answer you wanted, but it's the only right answer I'm afraid.

anyways, not here to shame you for your bad consumer habbits. I got my own lol (incl Spotify).
But I have been thoroughly considering moving to #Tidal - for various reasons.
But the second they get too big is the second they abuse their position of influence. You can set your clock to it.
Tidal was also caught by the Norwegian PRO called Tono in artificially inflating the numbers for - among others - Beyonce.

like I said, the only ones who benefit from streaming are mostly the publishers.
Consumers got a lot cheaper music thanks to it, and ngl: I have stopped checking releases because #Spotify does it for me lol
Intrinsically that's also a problem, that Spotify has scanned and organized all the world's music with the help of users as the human factor.
The "Discovery" feature is partyl dangerous because it more effectively fills the role of DJs and label promoters.

how to put this: #music #streaming is inherently #unethical.
With how subscription fees and revenue share works, the only ones who are going to be making money are big publishers.
T-Pain for instance belabours how he doesn't care how much royalties he gets, in fact: the publisher can get 100% of it if they want.
Small to medium size artists get nothing almost. It's like a nice little Christmas bonus.
If anything, #Tidal, but even they have been found to jux the numbers.

It's what we've been waiting for, folks. @npub1xsv…q6he intends to #opensource the #loops client - finally. But the server is open source and has been for some time.
What I'm hoping to see is some kind of federation being integrated and to see some standards for #video #recording and #editing.
Since Loops is going to be a competitor to #TikTok I'm hoping we can get some web based video editor going...
Hey, do you know there's a #wasm version of #ffmpeg? Mhm...

#Fedora really tipped #Ubuntu from its perch, and #uBlue as well as #Bazzite are examples of that.
Don't get me wrong, #Mint and even #Arch are still the everyman distros, but point me to another #libre distribution that has pushed the envelope as much as Fedora has.
#Nouveau, #Wayland, #PipeWire, #Ostree, etc. When it comes to #Linux, Fedora is a technology leader, and its users & organizational governance is key to that success.

#Tourism is evil. Please don't conflate traveling with tourism, as tourism is an industry run by a bunch of bastards - no matter the language they speak.
I could see a protest like this in #Bergen #Norway, as #AirBnB is taking over every property in the classic streets of Bergen. This also inflates the rent prices to a painful level that local people have to compete with.
