We are in the beginning stages of migrating our storage from MinIO to garage. After a month of sync only 4.5t of about 40t completed.
We are now restarting with different options and doing the important directories first, then at the end will do the giant federated cache directory.
Once we are ready to do the initial cut over there will be an announcement.

Must, "resist," impulse to offer puns.
Due to misbehavior, this PSU was, "grounded."
Don't give it a chance to get, "short," with you.
It is unable to, "rectify," itself.

If you have already enabled 2FA you can ignore this announcement.
Hello people (and a few bots) of DCS! DEF CON Social will require 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) for all accounts by the end of July 2026 to enhance security and dissuade automated credential stuffing.
To prepare for this requirement you will need a One Time Password (OTP) calculator, sometimes referred to as a “Google Authenticator App” or “Authenticator”.
- Set Up 2FA now: You don’t have to wait for the end of the month, you can set it up on your account now. Settings → Account → Two-factor Auth (https://defcon.social/settings/two_factor_authentication_methods)
Mastodon supports two types of 2FA:
- One Time Passwords are referenced as using the “Authenticator App” which is a OTP calculator. You will scan a QR code or manually enter your time seed, verify it works, and away you go. For iOS I prefer the excellent “OTP Auth” by Roland Moers. (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/otp-auth/id659877384)
- Security Keys: Once you have your OTP app working Mastodon then unlocks a more secure way of protecting your account, the final stage boss, physical Security Keys (SK). Sometimes called WebAuthn tokens, with YubiKeys being the most well known examples.
By the end of the month everyone will need to have an authenticator app set up, after that you can also decide to use a Security Key for maximum security.
Please direct any questions to support (https://defcon.social/@support) if you need help or advice on this transition.

Sorry for the short network interruption, when adding redundant power to a switch a network card got confused. It showed link as up, but was really down and only a power cycle got things happy.

Big excitement in tonight extended maintenance window, we will consolidate the different servers into one rack, our file server, DB server, and main front end server. During each move there should be a few minutes of down time.

If your intention is to contact the @npub1vdk…60v4 from defcon.social, you will need to complete the full name @npub1vdk…60v4 when messageing from defcon.social as just using a bare @npub1xfn…xjzf when messaging from defcon.social causes a message to be sent to the mostly unused @npub1xfn…xjzf account.
If your goal to reach the official support on defcon.social the web page https://defcon.social/home reports it as @npub1u6a…wvuq which is just @npub1u6a…wvuq when messaging from defcon.social.

Sorry for the temporary outage. Seattle had a wind storm and a circuit breaker popped, and a UPS drained. Everything is back up, but we are now making a shopping list to be able to diversify over more breakers and have better alerting from the UPS systems.

We have been suspending a lot of inauthentic bot accounts that post non-stop about conflicts. Many of the accounts are connected with each other. Some start by boosting posts for a while before posting themselves, many were also connected on the blue sky bridge. We are sure there are many still to be found, just a heads up to everyone.
We are not an instance for automated propaganda, influence, or blatant marketing posting, we are for real humans.

A lot of inauthentic Russian propaganda bots signed up in the last day or so, I think we got them all. Also a trend of emotionally charged anti-Europe news posting bots, suspending them as we discover them.

Automated Russian propaganda bot accounts will be suspended as they are discovered.

Our #DEFCON.social .onion service has been fixed and all Tor services working again.
It turns out our custom default style used an absolute instead of relative path and it broke rewrite rules, which broke the integrity hash, which broke the instance for Tor users.

We have turned on FETCH_REPLIES_ENABLED for #DEFCON.social! Our users should start seeing more and better context around posts they make or interact with. Please let us know if you see a difference!

Yes. What @npub12ts…x422 wrote.
You should be able to post up to 10 attachments per post, but I can confirm there appears to be a limit of 4.
We have a maintenance window Tuesday, May 13, 2025 between 8-9 pm pacific. I'll see if an applied patch restores out 10 limit attachment.
Thanks for the report!

We had never run “tootctl accounts prune” since #DEFCON.social came on-line, and it has pruned 110,880 accounts out of our database and storage.
“Prune remote accounts that never interacted with local users”
https://files.defcon.social/dcsocial-s3/media_attachments/files/114/403/542/106/482/058/original/259a337a2b0f6c4a.jpeg

Posting images should be happy again. We continue to free up space by removing remote headers and pruning remote profiles older than 2 years old.
Meanwhile the first new 60TB disk will be synchronizing with the older 30TB. Once that is complete we will start the process again with the second disk and get both MinIO servers up to 60TB. #DEFCON.social

2025-04-25 10:03:53 UTC

We are in the midst of getting ready to migrate our MinIO servers to larger disks 30TB -> 60TB to address unexpectedly running critically low on space. The metadata overhead for all the small files consumed almost 1/3 of all our storage space, and is not reflected in Mastodon statistics!
The first step is cleaning preview cards, trimming them back to 1 year, to get us some head room and buy us some time for the migration. It is pegging a CPU core at 100% and should take another 17 hours. It should free up almost 800Gigs.
We will keep everyone up to date as we progress to more storage Nirvana.
#DEFCON.social

2025-04-25 03:36:39 UTC

Problem identified with our storage server, dashboard show 10TB free but disk is full. We are still investigating courses of action: Media clean up to buy time to install bigger disks, and to understand why the dashboard is so far off telling us about disk use.

Six new accounts signed up, six new accounts suspended for fake company spam, Thai gambling sites, and the usual mix of bogus SEO activities.

No detected problems from the switchover to the new database server! 🎉🍾
It’s a purpose built system with really fast unlimited write endurance SSDs in a mirror. The old server only had room for a single NVMe, so it is nice to get the redundancy.

In working to clean up the last spam wave I discovered an account “instance.actor” that has 0 followers and 0 posts, and is present on 3,223 different instances. Any idea what that account is all about?

Hello,
Our maintenance window is complete. We have upgraded from Mastodon 4.2.13 to Mastodon 4.3.1 (with equivalent patches for features.)
Some changes between 4.2.x and 4.3.x:
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/
One patch has been changed with this upgrade. @npub12ts…x422 decided we should move from a 1000 char max to 2000 character max per post. That should be live. Other changes for max attachments, and max resolution for images/video should be present. The number of links to other accounts in profiles should also be like before.
As usual, if you notice problems, please let us know.
Thanks!

Anyone know of a way to export the list of publishers allowed in the trends/trending links/Allow Publisher ?
With a couple years of curating allowed publishers it Gould be great to be able to see what we have allowed and possibly edit or remove some.
It would also be a great way to share with others. “Here is a list of good science publications” “Here is a disallow list of bad publishers” etc.

We haven’t had to delete anything in storage since we started #DEFCON.social, currently sitting at 12.8 TB.
