I sadly just saw the announcement that #astrodon will be shut down. 😞
So either I/we migrate to another server or… yeah. What are we thinking?
I‘ve always appreciated all the interactions I got here. It felt less like a bubble (even though I am sure it still is 😆).
Where else are you guys? Where would you be interested to hear about #space/ #astronomy stuff?

Still processing… but you can call me Dr. Bibi now. 💅
I am eternally grateful to my supervisors, mentors, and everyone who supported me on this journey. 💜

I am finalising my PhD thesis at the moment, and it is "tradition" to have a quote at the beginning of each chapter. Now I want to be difficult: I want quotes from FEMALE astronomers / scientists talking about astronomy.

My brain did a backflip yesterday.
We were at an Italian restaurant in Sweden. My partner and I speak English to each other. The waitress brought the food and said: ”Bon appétit!”
Me: ”Danke.” ☠️
I am very proud that I speak ~6 languages, but sometimes my brain gets confused 😂

Hello friends! I was considering creating a #pixelfed account but I am unsure about the server. Thoughts? Thank you 🫶

2025-01-22 12:47:01 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…avns It's a bit more complicated here. The teaching language is either Swedish or English -- depending on the course. However, it is not required from a PhD student, researcher, and sometimes even higher to speak Swedish. Nonetheless, some boards operate fully in Swedish and if you've been invited to present something there, they just assume you speak Swedish too. In my particular case it is even more ironic, because I was invited to join as a representative of the diversity, equity and inclusion committee. :D

@nprofile…gjvz It is a mystery to me how some people just don't get it... Isn't this like common sense?

2025-01-22 09:09:26 UTC

I will die on this hill: If new people are joining a meeting at a university, you CANNOT just assume they speak the language of the country the uni is located in.
YOU ASK IF THEY DO.

Maybe I should just stop being on these platforms and go back to blogging on my own homepage… 😔
Like really. I love doing outreach, sharing my story but… not like this. Thoughts?

Hello #astronomy friends!
Here is the post from yesterday! (Reminder that on IG they are on time - mostly ;))
December 5: Trapped by expectations, driven by passion. 💫 Mary Somerville defied the odds to become a pioneer in science—proving that courage and perseverance can change the course of history. 🌟

Good morning #astronomy friends! December 3 comes with a slight delay… but here she is! Jocelyn Bell Burnell!
Did you know Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered the first pulsar as a PhD student in 1967? ✨
This groundbreaking find reshaped astronomy, even though the Nobel Prize went to her supervisor. Today, she’s celebrated for her work and her dedication to equity in physics, funding scholarships for underrepresented groups.

December 2 - Vera Rubin ✨

Her groundbreaking work on galaxy rotation uncovered the evidence we needed to show that dark matter exists. She also blazed trails for women in science, overcoming barriers and inspiring future generations.

To all #astronomy lovers,
The Leonid #meteor shower peaks this weekend, best viewed after midnight until dawn. They will radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere! The moon might outshine some of the faint ones.

The #Leonids are caused by Earth passing through debris left behind by Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. It orbits the Sun every ~33 years, leaving a trail of dust and particles. When the particles enter our atmosphere, they burn up and create bright streaks in the sky.
