@nprofile…5ds9 I am actively lobbying parliament. Unfortunately my good contact there is now part of the committee of the hearings about covid. Have to wait for that to end first.
He is part of the coalition and he said he would be the perfect member of @nprofile…gd38 he once replied to me on stage: does not own a car, no intention to.
But the legislation will be tricky. Because exactly what causes a problem in Amsterdam - no discipline and criteria for taxi drivers - is exactly what is the solution elsewhere in the country: those sweet volunteer/underpaid taxi drivers in the countryside who drive taxis to bring special needs kids to their specialised schools in the morning. Do something else during the day and drive them home during rush hour in the evening. With stressed parents eager to complain...
Some kind of complicated, perhaps incoherent, legislation is needed. Which might not survive a legal challenge by companies like Uber...

In Orlando a lady in a huge monster truck drove her machine on top of a Lamborghini sports car in the parking lot of Crunch Fitness. Because she couldn't see the car.

@nprofile…4jyh Ondertussen heb ik delta.chat ontdekt. Geniaal.

https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/artikelen/meer-verkeersdoden-hier-door-handelsdeal-met-vs-europa-versoepelt-veiligheidseisen-voor-grote-amerikaanse-autos-161867
Journalist (in the 1st fragment) also tried such a car and explains 'You are a danger for others on the road, you are mostly busy trying not to hit something, it constantly beeps'.
In the 2nd fragment some figures. Since 2010 36% road casualties in the EU and an increase of 30% in the US.
Conclusion after driving a Dodge: "we were the most hated on the road."

1. BRT-Netwerk.

@nprofile…g8y8 In the sixties Houten wanted to protect the quiet character of the village when it was chosen by the government to expand. Bike lanes as a conditional backbone for traffic were negotiated by the elders of Houten. Currently 450 professional visitors, like city planners, per year come to see it. See the civil servant who guides them in action https://www.rtvutrecht.nl/nieuws/3875045/waarom-de-hele-wereld-komt-fietsen-in-houten (some fragments in English, starting at 20 seconds in the video from RTV Utrecht).

@nprofile…t4l2 This reminds me of my (only) visit to a 'big box' store near Amsterdam this year.
I rented a car to get mousetraps because they were sold out in all local shops. It would be 20 minutes by bike and it was half an hour before closing time.
The parking lot is on the ground floor, the box is build on top of it. Solid concrete structures, it will probably stay there for many decades.
I didn't stay long because the rented car is cheaper if you return it quickly.

New mobility policy in the Netherlands. Local situations are no longer calculated with 'hours lost in traffic' but instead with an index of reachability of 8 key destinations (work, school, hospital, supermarket, etc.) using the 5 modalities: car, bike, bike+public transport, just public transport, and by foot.

Tree roots are pushing up bicycle lanes in Amsterdam (also elsewhere?).
Please think with me. Could it be a solution to lay an iron mat over the tree roots composed of a grid filled with short vertical bamboo stems, which are then periodically horizontally cut?
The stems are pierced with iron wire to prevent them from sinking down were there are no roots.
Bicyclists then always have a perfectly level surface to drive on. Just a short bump, but very gradual. The tree can grow and gets rain.

27% of households in the Netherlands has no car. For 650.000 out of the 8 million this is for financial reasons. The institute that did this research to answer the question ‘why do people have a car?’ concludes “For many households without a car the money is of no or little concern.” At https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/visualisaties/dashboard-bevolking/bevolkingspiramide I see the 20 somethings and elderly who can easily do without a car. @nprofile…g8y8 https://mastodon.nl/@ikbenautovrij/114216550897934282

@nprofile…g8y8 What argumentation will you choose? Try to find something unique for the situation with a sense of urgency. I demonstrated that the clutter of bicycles on the pavement made it difficult to pass while many pedestrians go to the supermarket through that spot. In combination with increased bicycle ownership.

I quickly got an e-mail from the civil servant dealing with this. Although I do not exclude the possibility that he did a web search on my name and then realised I was extremely well connected to everything about this topic. And probably one handshake away from him.
Imagine ‘Jason Slaughter’ as a query.

In my case, a nearby GOW street had little space for bikes but many addresses. So people would park just round the corner in my street.
The 'fietsvlonder’ was first used in de Kinkerstraat and just became available to be used somewhere else.

Allowed as an exception because the car does not have space for the larger Dutch ones. The car model should have “kentekenplaat model 18.2 toegestaan” in the RDW database.

@nprofile…g8y8 Did you know that the Jeep, Dodge en RAM trucks come from an Amsterdam-based car factory? https://archive.ph/IlVdt Actually, it is not Amsterdam but two train stations south of it: Taurusavenue 1, 2132 LS, Hoofddorp. The train station is behind it! There is a small but still underused car park if you really want to go there by car. @nprofile…g8y8 In spite of this problematic ruling coalition in the Netherlands we still have relatively independent institutes producing reports with excellent research questions. This one asks the question who benefits from choices in infrastructure. Does it favour the rich or the poor? An improved bike lane, does it increase the number of schools children can choose from? Do manual labourers benefit from a new metro? https://www.kimnet.nl/publicaties/rapporten/2025/01/09/verdelingseffecten-van-mobiliteitsbeleid Throw the pdf in your favourite translation tool...

@nprofile…g8y8 In Amsterdam I would feel entitled to just take over the road and bike in the middle of it. Don't expect much anger from the motorists because they can see there is no alternative. Would not be fined I am sure, for the same reason. Luckily the bike lanes are cleaned and I never felt the need for such a stunt. Probably the city understands what a mess it would be if bicyclists are all deprived of their bike lane and start using the main road.
