Skeleton with Duck Shirt? Approved.
Also, that game reminds me a lot of Ebenezer and the Invisible World (probably mostly the art style + being a metroidvania).

My understanding is over the last maybe 10-15 years they've been shrinking (various rounds of layoffs), merged or shifted from one corporate division to another, downgraded from a major studio to "support studio" after lackluster sales, etc so much that it really isn't the old company. Most the big major players (and minor players, for that matter, with how much they shrunk or moved around) left several years ago.

I don't think I played 3D blast till some collections 15+ years later, and I didn't find it all that fun. Game seemed very slow and hard to control, very odd for a Sonic game.

I've been looking at listings of CIB Breath of Fire lately. The current listings on Price Charting show something I've been wondering about:
https://www.pricecharting.com/offers?product=6873
If you look at those you'll see one where the white cardboard the game would lay in is weirdly 3 sided, with one side mostly exposed and the opposite doubled. Another shows a 4 sided box, which is what I expect.
Did anyones SNES games come with such a 3 sided inlay? Is a sign of trying to pass off a repro as authentic?

In the sense that "the immutable copy you have will not get worse over time". Not immune to "new stuff is just generally worse and worse".
Though, that's not always entirely accurate either, as things like compatibility can get worse, and there's things like HDCP that will update tables from a new physical disk (like a new Blu-ray) that can basically brick a previously working player, or make it work less at least, if the company didn't renew their HDMI license.

Pyrotoad is on HUGE sale right now (under $1) on both itch.io and steam. This is a #indie #gameboycolor puzzle platformer, with some hard platforming. If you grab it from itch, you can get the ROM too to play your preferred way to play gameboy color games.
Itch: https://rikoclon.itch.io/pyrotoad
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3984130/Pyrotoad
This was made by a team of 2, including @npub18cf…yl9n who made my current pixeltuber and whose games I've demoed and streamed before (including pyrotoad). Worth checking out.

You can decide whether you like or do not like a game, even with some strong passion, before or without beating it.
This seems obvious enough to me, but apparently its an absurd idea to some.
However, this shouldn't seem that weird. How many people like Pac-Man and Tetris, and how many people beat those games?
A lot of us grew up in an environment where beating the game was just not going to happen. We rented games for a weekend, played at a friends house, and maybe got stuck on that 1 boss.

They actually had experiments, even public demonstrations/competitions between flat earthers and round earthers, to prove which was which using sophisticated measurement instruments and mathing it out.
Certain flat earthers often walked away claiming victory.
Now, this is largely do to some rhetorical and logical trickery of a charismatic leader of the claims, in some instances. In one instance due to an Encyclopedia with a very wrong formula for the curvature.

2026-09-30 06:11:01 UTC

- reply

There's some interesting history around how flat earth ideas became popular in the 19th century at least. Just... very interesting in several ways, including with testing it. There's a lot of draw due to being just entertaining to hear someone promote the idea, it seems, but also examples of a population with some extra knowledge, but not enough, leading to problems.

I'm only really familiar with this idea in two senses: Generic horror/puzzle video games that are churned out recently and I honestly just consider incredibly bland and boring spaces, rather than either comforting or particularly creepy.
Or the older idea of liminal spaces being the literal transition between rooms, like doorways (with some context of Medieval literature emphasizing this as places where you shouldn't stick around as you may slip between worlds of Fae may show up).

2026-09-23 20:48:35 UTC

Had this brilliant idea: what if we made games that relied primarily on audio instead of visuals. Audio Games instead of Video Games!
Then I though, "I bet those are already a thing."
They are totally already a thing, they have been a thing for a very long time, and there's a lot of them (granted, many of them are basically just text games + TTS):

There's some gems here.
I personally like the Might and Magic games, and you can get all of them very cheap here (note, these are NOT the Heroes of Might and Magic games).
Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy is $1 and a game I feel is an underrated gem, even if I wouldn't call it an RPG myself (though very weird). If you don't like things a bit weird, you probably won't like it, as that seems to be the biggest complaint I've heard about it. (Far from the weirdest stuff)

Duke Nukem Forever famously was announced in April 1997 and then was stuck in development hell "forever", eventually releasing on June 2011.
There's now been more time between the release of Duke Nukem Forever and now (over 15 years) and the announcement of Duke Nukem Forever and the release (over 14 years).

While some will still work, and a Xeon processor in particular is likely to work as it's a server/workstation CPU, 15 years is well past the usual life cycle for most CPUs, especially if they are trying to do heavy/contemporary gaming.
Uncharted 4 all I can find on that is someone maybe got it working with a hack but it ran terribly as far as I can find? Current specs still require AVX2 processors.
Could a company potentially do it? Possibly, but high price for low returns.

2026-09-16 23:34:55 UTC

- reply

Ok, turns out I had misheard what you said as 3.6 Ghz rather than 3.4 Ghz. Now it all makes a lot more sense.
Yea, that released before AVX.
So, yea, the thing isn't a matter of power so much as the processor even understanding what it's being asked to process. This likely comes down more to the tools they used to develop the game (Engine, Compilers, language even) rather than the developers direct decisions. Most seem to wait many years before using new instruction sets.

2026-09-16 20:43:35 UTC

Alright, after watching this there's a lot that could prompt long discussions (probably only interesting to people like me) about game design philosophies, market preferences, historical shifts in the game industry, etc.
However, I'm instead going stick with:
What the hell processor do you have [@Oregon_Pacifist](https://retro-gaiden.com/@Oregon_Pacifist ) !? I've been trying to track down those specs without AVX2 way too long!

Huh, and only now realizing the logo and the 9 are at least vaguely similar. That's going to be coincidental (especially since they end the spiral at the top-ish, more like a 6, rather than at the bottom like a 9). But still, considering how big a deal they were making about 9s, it _seems_ intentional.

E-ink displays only crossed got to the 60Hz mark last year, and then only a few such displays have hit the market. The ones that have are VERY expensive, far more expensive than comparable size LCD/LED. I haven't found latency numbers on those, but most E-Ink wave modes are high latency, with the fastest (most ghosting) still being 120 ms.
Eventually, they may be ready. Not yet though.

"right" is commonly the translation of Japanese "Ne?" in shows I've seen from before 2020, particularly Midnight Dinner: Tokyo Stories (or the original), where 3 women friends would commonly go "Ne?" after every sentence. But I've seen it in other Japanese shows too.
Otherwise, I've noticed certain people in real life doing this, but not content creators, so it may just be the "popular" ones I don't pay attention to.

The 360, especially early on, was a great system. I'm not super happy with some of the things that became standard in the game industry as a result of Microsoft policies with this system, but it started great.

That's a lot amount of DDR3 RAM for 2012. Along with a Xenon processor, someone was using this for production, it sounds like.
For a MAC, I'd normally expect that production purpose to be video editing or something along those lines, but that Radeon 5770 in 2012 would be a weird choice alongside everything else.

It's probably the biggest reason for CGI use in movies (and tv) after it, and the death of many more practical effects and especially claymation. The dinosaurs were originally planned to be claymation by one of the most well respected claymation artists of the time, but the CGI guys managed to impress Spielberg with stuff they weren't supposed to be working on.

I could go either way on that, but mostly because I think the neon lights on the right are hurting my eyes. That comes down to a lot of factors though, and looks like the screenshots are from different in game times of day, so that could be it.
Regardless, I think the nostalgia factor comes up a lot with considering old games. Even knowing how some games utilized scan lines, and not minding them, I've never really understood the preference for scanlines in most games at least.

I'll say the font choice for the new one does seem to fit the name/theme better. First one makes me think of a racing game, second makes me think of taxis.

The weird thing to me is that he seemed to object to the idea of a pack in game at all, for any system. I wonder if prior NOA just didn't let him know they were doing pack in games previously.

The full interview is included in the link and has some other interesting points. Another highlight to me: According to Reggie here (granting memory and double translation issues), Miyamoto seemed to object to including Wii Sports as a pack in game, or even the idea of 'giving away content for free'. Reggie was able to say when he bought a SNES Super Mario [World] came with it.
I wonder if that wasn't done in Japan, and Miyamoto was oblivious this whole time.
