oh I didn't mean to imply that legislation necessarily held any of this up (I have no idea), only that hitching the release of hearing aid features to an FDA approved hearing test is unimpeachably prudent, which is how the company needs to operate now that its underdog days are so far behind it.

I learned about Nura headphones' ability to measure the ear's mechanical frequency response (which IIUC doesn't account for hearing loss) in 2019 and it gave me such a sudden realization that a user-tuned EQ expands headphones' reach to cover (most of) the in-ear hearing aid market.
It took longer than I expected but—to your point about Apple at its best—it's no surprise that the feature's timing coincides with an FDA-approved hearing test.

My EPM sent out a message about how my project is now "at-risk…due to the recent changes in staffing" and I'm loving the euphemism but also it's ok! Everybody knows it's because the engineering DRI got hit by a car! 🫠

Oh they *used* to be in Emeryville, now in Boca Raton, FL. fne.

TIL Helite (the people who make my airbag vest) has a 1-year crashes-included warranty and their office is in Emeryville, about 3 miles from my house. I don't think I'm inside the warranty, but I ought to drop in and shake *everyone's* hand.

The elder kid visited me on Thursday before surgery. He had a lot of questions and has been very careful! Processing things pretty well, all things considered. Meanwhile, the baby doesn't seem to think anything has changed.

As for the bike, I haven't seen it since the crash, which also means no dashcam footage yet. We'll see tomorrow, I'm supposed to be mostly off my feet until then anyways.

I've been a believer in boots ever since a car hit my ankle in 2013, breaking my motorcycle instead of my leg. I have no idea what my boot saved me from this time but the damage says it did its job.
My Aerostich wore through in two places from the slide but kept me protected. Ablative armour!
My gloves have some scuffs and my hands have no damage despite breaking my wrist and arm. Maybe I could have used a lower grade of protection, but I make my living with my hands.

Helmets are known to prevent injury, but airbags are a more recent development, especially off the track. The first thing I felt when I came off the bike was my body and neck becoming immobilized by its deployment. I mostly landed on my hip, then back, which were both covered (my hip got injured anyway, but it could have been worse!). The secondary hit to my head almost certainly would have included a neck injury without it. Probably saved my spine, 10/10 extremely underrated.

Starting with my helmet. I'm told I had quite a flight, and the damage on the back of my helmet indicates that my head bounced off the ground *hard*. Despite the distance I slid, the scratches in the shell are very short, and inside them you can see a crease from where the foam gave away underneath, absorbing the blow. And it worked: no sign of head injury/concussion.
Helmets: 10/10, appropriately-rated safety equipment.

I wear a lot of gear when I ride, and basically all of it was destroyed, each contributing in their own way to prevent a worse outcome.

Welp, I missed #xoxofest this weekend because I got hit by a car on my way home from work on Wednesday. Spent the night in the ER, surgery the next day, and back home since Thursday night with a plate in my arm.
