One last point about trusting machines over African people, writing and scholarship:
The fact that African studies programs specifically are being targeted and dismantled around America is also something to contend with.

Now we have people cheering for the Caine Prize to be eliminated all together.
Because it's not just about attacking African writers individually-- it's about attacking pipelines for Black success.
The Caine Prize is specifically not universal.
It is for Africans, by Africans.

White Substack writers basically revolted against Pangram being integrated into the platform months ago.
Numerous articles reported that these writers fed their own work into Pangram, and the platform flagged it as AI.
The question is-- do you people trust machines over people? Over yourselves?

The Caine Prize is an award for African writers, judged by other African writers.
As a Ghanaian/Nigerian-American, I've followed the Caine Prize for years-- I read African literature.
The Atlantic article uses AI to justify overriding the judgment of African people reading their own literature.

What chills me more is that the Atlantic article's author not only scanned Kundieza's work, but also scanned 25 years' worth of Caine Prize awardees to check whether they were human.
A prize for African writers.
It feels like the literary equivalent of doing a non-consensual genital check.

Re: Pangram--- white writers on Substack basically revolted when Substack announced adding a Pangram detection tool on the platform.
Writers started noting that Pangram was getting things wrong, and flagging their own human work as AI.

But the crux of the original article is that a Canadian American writer didn't like the story by an African writer and asks us to trust her taste that the story is bad, full of stereotypes, and isn't deserving of a prestigious prize---
And thus, deserves to be checked whether the story is human.

Exhibit A: Attacks on Critical Race Theory started in schools as "parents' rights" and book bans-- within 7 years, this morphed into an anti-DEI purge of adults in workplaces and academia.

We are being ruled by absolute losers

New:
I sat down with [@aljazeera.com](https://bsky.app/profile/aljazeera.com ) to talk about my firing from the Washington Post, being the last Black staff columnist left at the Post.
And how I believe the right is not just engaging in “cancel culture”, but “annihilation culture”.

As a former gamer, I cannot overstate how big of a deal this right-wing takeover of Electronic Arts is.
Are they going to create video games where they kidnap and dismember journalists like Jamal Khashoggi?

According to WaPo’s termination letter my post referencing Kirk’s views on Black women was not even brought up.
The Post’s stated reasons are *worse*.
Read the termination letter for yourself.

It was very telling that for three days, none of the major TV anchors would have me on air one-on-one to talk about my firing from the Washington Post over Charlie Kirk.
The first offers were from
Black media, independent media, Substackers, and podcasters.

2025-09-15 16:48:51 UTC

For the record.
My posts were not even about Kirk directly, but about America's apathy towards political violence, and the coddling of white male shooters and hate peddlers.
I was fired because I mentioned race: white men and violence-- that was my "gross misconduct."

Some personal news:
I've been fired from the Washington Post in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting.
Thread incoming.

For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country…
Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year.
And America shrugged and moved on.

So.. officially, I'm the last Black staff columnist left in the Washington Post's opinion section.

Columbia canceled my class on Race and Media. But I decided to teach it anyway. So I built a school, instead.
500+ students online and in person.
My first independently operated course and lecture begins TONIGHT!

When the discourse has gotten to the level of "let's hope and pray the armed national guard will be nice to other people," it should be an indicator that we are collectively IN A BAD PLACE

2025-06-08 18:47:20 UTC

The path to the end of Roe V. Wade was paved with abortion providers being killed, and clinics being bombed and set on fire.

Have national Dems, who claim to want to "win back" the working class, said anything yet about ICE injuring and arresting the head of the SEIU of California?

The crackdowns on civilians and the threat of the national guard being sent to LA should be *the* most important story right now-- not the Trump/Musk feud or whatever the f**k that was.
People are being terrorized all over the country. News outlets need to get it together.
