@nprofile…cq4q is that end-of-day anywhere-on-earth? Or end-of-day Athens timezone? Or... somewhere else?

Django's built-in admin is powerful, but it's essentially a separate framework within Django. After attempting to modernize django-admin2, I realized we needed a fresh approach: an admin interface that works like the rest of Django, built on generic CBVs, plugins, and view factories. Meet Django Admin Deux: a proof-of-concept admin where CRUD operations are just actions, knowledge transfers both ways, and everything feels like Django.

The code I proposed in my [original blog post](https://emma.has-a.blog/articles/why-do-we-need-an-external-app-for-rest.html) was very minimal. One thing that had to be fixed for [djrest2](https://pypi.org/project/djrest2/) to a true contender in lightweight django rest api implementations was that it needed to provide pagination information in lists alongside the results. This is now the case

Why, in 2025, do we still need a 3rd party app to write a REST API with Django?
his is a question the predident of the DSF was asked at FOSDEM after his talk.
Let's try (very hard) to **NOT** answer it because... Do we **really** need a 3rd party app to write an API with Django?

@nprofile…m624 @nprofile…70tq @nprofile…53dg That is definitely part of the story but it's not just that or you would see the same drop at 4.2 and 2.2, they are not there (it's there at 3.2)

@nprofile…70tq @nprofile…m624 @nprofile…53dg I'm also really curious of pre 1.10 since the 1.x series was the "bad srudent".
What was the policy again back then? Supporting the last 2 stable releases?
What I see in this second graph is that adoption of supported releases has (very roughly) flatlined since 1.11 which was still the old release system and has had a major drop at every major release since 3.0

t the time of the survey, 3.2 was still supported AFAICT, that's the big difference with now where 3.2 has been EOL for over a year

@nprofile…70tq @nprofile…fsjf @nprofile…r52n I still have projects running on 3.2. Despite what we tell ourselves, upgrading a Django-based application that has over 50 dependencies is not trivial, especially with no LTS to LTS migration story and every Django minor version having breaking changes.

@nprofile…m624 I don't see those two as being mutually exclusive at all, to the contrary!

📢 New Blog Post: Making Django Ready for the Next 20 Years
Emma's candidacy statement for the Django Steering Council.
- lowering the barrier to contribution and involving a more diverse set of contributors
- dealing with the realities of an aging code-base
- building code ownership and groups specializing in specific areas of core

@npub1wfj…2ewz something tells me I lost you at class-based 😉
Just looking at the code for `simple_tag`, `inclusion_tag` and Jake's `block_tag` I see an awful lot of repetition there... I've written quite a few complex template tags and same there...
I like class-based. That said, having that in re-usable functions would still be a plus

@npub18hd…kf64 yes please!
Any (future) way to connect it to multiple servers? Maybe through a non-ip kvm?

Speaking of #django community and visibility, is there still anyone reviewing submissions of rss feeds to https://www.djangoproject.com/community/ ?

@npub1qu6…r38h I'm also pondering rolling out my own (`.md` file-based but still Django) is yours open-source?

2024-07-02 13:44:40 UTC

I remember talking about Django-based static sites generators with members of the community ( cc @npub1qu6…r38h ) a few years back.
I'm wondering if anyone is using one and what they are using?
