Artist and political cartoonist Pat Oliphant has died, at the age of 90. His combination of artistic virtuosity and sharply pointed wit left him without equal.
This was his first work published after 9.11.2001. [edit] Its impact may be blunted with the intervening years, but it was a knockout at the time … for it looked inward, at the perils of our own actions, rather than outwards towards a (then) unknown assailant.
I immediately ordered a lithograph (#2 of 20) and it has graced my living room for 25 years.
The murderous abuses of ICE – and countless other violations, and even wars – bear witness to its prescience.
The sometimes exaggerated features of his many targets led some to accuse him of racism. I remember times when I gasped out loud in shock over a particularly egregious trope.
But absolutely no one, and no group, was spared. All targets fell to his pen, and comfort was rarely offered to any. True art will always shock, and his was no exception. I have missed him ever since he retired. R.I.P., Pat.

I removed a bin from a shelf to get a lens …
I turned around for a second or two, and heard a *whump* behind me.
I turned back, and there she was.
I asked her to wait while I grabbed my iPhone for a pic. It’s a little blurry, but you get the idea. She had to jump from about three feet away, which was a pretty tricky maneuver!

@nprofile…nekg Here’s another tease from Wikipedia:
“Director Christopher Nolan described Odysseus as complicated, "an amazing strategist, [and] a very wily person". He was interested in his cleverness and inventiveness, particularly citing Odysseus's characterization in the 2017 translation of the Odyssey by British-American classicist Emily Wilson.”
And Zendaya is Athena!
(I’m lucky, as Providence has one of IMAX’s top-of-the-line theaters.)

@nprofile…nekg The movie will be another Nolan IMAX extravaganza …
they had to invent a special housing for the (extremely noisy) camera, to allow them to actually record live audio. Can’t wait.

Last night, I finished reading *The Odyssey* …
and though I haven’t read other versions for comparison, Emily Wilson’s translation is *spectacular*. This is the one to get. The language is contemporary, clear, and brilliant.
All the way through, I found myself thinking about everyone who will be seeing Christopher Nolan’s film this summer.
Ancient as the story is, there is much that speaks directly to our time …
[a spoiler alert is unnecessary, after nearly 3,000 years]
it ends with Zeus hurling a thunderbolt, and the goddess Athena shouting “Stop this war!”
Hard to miss the point, these days …
The momentum of the final chapters was incredible.
I found myself thinking … “you know, I really hope that Nolan took the time to sit down with Quentin Tarantino for at least a drink and a chat …”
because there’s a climactic sequence that struck me as being pure Tarantino.
Still, I can’t wait to see how Nolan pulls this off;
I believe he will, and if he does, he has to be a shoo-in for Best Adapted Screenplay awards (among many others) –
as it’s a Herculean task. (I’m mixing my mythos.)
If you’ve put off reading Homer’s work because it’s a “classic,” or worried it would be dry or stuffy,
I can’t recommend Wilson’s achievement highly enough. It will add so much to your eventual experience in the theater.
I was *so* sorry when it ended, and there was no more to read … now I’m moving on to her translation of *The Iliad!*

1/4 My NIKKOR 200mm tele arrived at lunchtime … here’s what it looks like on the adapter, with the built-in lens hood extended.
You’d think it was ungainly, but it’s surprisingly easy to carry and walk around with.
Of course, I had to go outside and test it out.

Well, I seem to have successfully migrated to sunny.garden!
This is my first toot from my new home … the transfer may not be complete yet, but things seem to be working.
I notice that my old posts don’t seem to have shown up … I’m not sure, but they may be gone for good.
A big “thank you” to @FediThing for all the helpful information …
Thanks to sunny.garden for letting me join their instance …
and to mastodon.cloud, who provided my first Fedi home since shortly before he-who-will-not-be-named bought Twitter.
My next tasks:
replace my introduction toot(s) (which can be much longer now!)
and edit my verification links.
I’m also going to see if I can rescue my old toots; I still have a window open where they’re visible, which will at least let me grab the intro info.
If there’s still any way to transfer the old toots, clue me in! Thanks.
Onward!
