@nprofile…l7em @nprofile…sxwp @nprofile…v2v2 @nprofile…rxg6 the TUC only did this after some very significant strikes by migrant workers during the 1970s, which the trade unions mostly opposed or were at best apathetic towards. Imperial Typewriters was one. Grunwick was where there started to be support from the unions.
The Musician's Union is essentially a glorified insurance broker unless you work in a Symphony orchestra or west end pit.

@nprofile…f4gm the 11+ hasn't been abolished. It's not compulsory but there are still plenty of state grammar schools and kids sitting it and an entire tutoring industrial complex built around it.

@nprofile…l7em that's very bad. Seems unlikely schools would bother with batteries so if it is the solar it's probably the inverters.

@nprofile…ty3t @nprofile…x9tq a big reason for high costs is the way pricing works in periods of high demand - e.g. when gas stations can demand millions to turn on at all, and prices are determined by the highest unit cost of any supplier at the time. I think this is a UK specific policy reason and not inherent to anything.
Another thing is most of the UK's has storage has been decommissioned which means it's very vulnerable to gas spot prices whereas much of Europe stocks up when gas is cheaper etc.

@nprofile…l7em did you see that time when Michael Crick walked onto an estate in London with £0000s if camera equipment hanging off him and flaking out of bags etc. trying to get mugged and all he got was advice to to stand around like that because he might get mugged.

@nprofile…l7em when I was a teenager in the '90s we used to go drinking (under age of course) in Clacton and it was always 50/50 whether you would brush the wrong bloke's elbow on your way to a bar or sit on the wrong end of a bench too close to someone's girlfriend and then get offered out (or actually get attacked, didn't happen to me but did to a friend, although he beat the other bloke and got us all barred as a reward, not they they enforced the bar either).
In my 20s in London there was never, ever this constant undercurrent of macho violence and I lived a couple hundred metres off 'murder mile' in Clapton for a while. Although we'd be drinking in Hackney or somewhere with people who actually lived in London, not Leicester Square or wherever.

@nprofile…l7em there used to be a shop in Clacton, sold used computer games, LPs and incense mostly. Bought several jazz LPs there in the mid '90s that I still own and listen to.
The vinyl 'revival'the past ten years has completely fucked LP prices. Was great when people were selling them off to replace with CDs.

As relevant today (if you exchange Enoch Powell for Farage) as it was nearly 50 years ago.

@npub19uy…0n85 it's a UK example but Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech was 50 years ago for example. He was a Tory MP. Labour MP Frank Field wrote a eulogy for him when he died.

@npub19uy…0n85 don't really think this is true, you can find great replacement dogwhistles from quite mainstream people pretty easily over the past 30 years or further back.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 @npub1ezx…74mr @npub17qm…uz8c North America was already extremely capitalist by 1870 so the point was somewhat moot. Africa however wasn't. The central argument for me apart from the mir is when he says that steamships and railways don't need to be invented twice though.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 @npub1ezx…74mr @npub17qm…uz8c yes but he also says that the idea of capitalism having to take hold first counts exclusively for Western Europe which implies that the analysis for Russia could apply to other places too.

@npub1ezx…74mr @npub1hpc…hjn3 @npub17qm…uz8c that's there in the beginning but he very much goes against it in the Zasulich correspondence, where he says Russia doesn't need and shouldn't try to have a capitalist phase.
