I finally got around to reading "The Blossoming of the Big Tree" by @npub1faz…vc22 and I greatly enjoyed it! Big recommendation for everyone who likes SciFi mixed with a bit of Ugandan mythology, good world-building, and relatable characters!

I spent two wonderful days with @npub15yt…yftt and the other supporters in the Netherlands! It was really great to meet in person, make new plans and see new connections for the @npub1d38…pus2 and [@sustainable_schools](https://mas.to/@sustainable_schools ) !
And I got my own team t-shirt!!
You should definitely follow the work of these organizations, they are going to do a lot of great stuff soon, and every support will be welcome!

I really think the main emphasis here should be that "Oh no, I'm not good at this, you should do it" should not be an excuse to let the woman do the work.
I am a woman and I wouldn't consider myself "good at cooking and cleaning". Somehow I still ended up doing it most of the time in my last relationship...

I don't care if he is good at it as long as he just gets up and *does* it.

The water well project by @npub1d38…pus2 in #Uganda is going well, but the water table is lower than they expected, so they will need a bit more financial support to buy a pump and some more materials - only a small amount is missing :)

The beamer did work in the end, and we could enjoy an entire AI-generated presentation about how we can use a large amount of AI tokens and time to solve a problem that I think is not a problem...

We have Quantum Computers and Artificial Intelligence, but a reliable connection of a laptop to a beamer is still an unsolved problem.

Just a small sum left to raise to finish the project, still in the middle of the current dry season in #Uganda!

I'm looking for a new job starting in October! I'm a physicist by training, did a PhD and postdoc in experimental quantum physics. My experience ranges over laser and vacuum technology, physics simulations, data analysis, environmental monitoring services, publication writing and much more.
If you are aware of cool and very science-related opportunities (especially in the #Munich area, definitely Germany), let me know!

Maybe you have recently heard about #Uganda because of their general elections. After an extended internet blackout issued by the government and severe threats to the opposition leader and democratic voters, president Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 (!), has been re-elected. There is no hope for change from the official side, so it is up to the people to at least make a change in their local communities.
Please support the @npub1d38…pus2 ! > https://www.gofundme.com/f/buying-land-eco-youths-network-uganda

The @npub1d38…pus2 in #Uganda is doing a great job in teaching the youth in questions of sustainability and growing food!
Thank you to everyone who has already donated to the fundraiser I am hosting for them, where we raise money to buy a piece of land to decrease monthly cost in the long term.
Our next milestone: If we raise 50% of the full sum within the next month, they can already move to the new land! Read the update & donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/buying-land-eco-youths-network-uganda
Please share widely! Thank you!

I also read about snowflake in the context of internet blockades in Iran. I don't understand the technical details, but it seems to be different from VPN, and it requires someone in a non-blocked country to run something in their browser, then people can connect via them.

Normal week in the lab: Everything is almost working again (after several lasers had to be exchanged), but then this one custom-made electronics box fails that was built 10 years ago and all detail knowledge is lost or conflicting with the actual setup.
While trying to fix it, the water cooling starts leaking.
And the boss keeps telling us that we really need to catch up with our competitor's results :'D

Ever seen that funny experiment where you cut up a grape, put it in a microwave and observe the plasma sparks between the two halves?
Physicists have figured out that you can actually manufacture a microwave resonator to enhance GHz microwave frequencies using grapes - in a way that improves precise quantum sensing experiments!
Science rules! :blobcatsunglasses:

The results are published in a real peer-reviewed physics journal: https://journals.aps.org/prapplied/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.22.064078

I'm a #Physics PostDoc at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics near #Munich, Germany! I play with ultracold atoms in lattices of laser light to simulate other quantum systems!
I'm also a fan of open source software (#FOSS), #Linux, and I code in #python for work and for fun!
I love SciFi in all forms, especially #StarTrek and #DoctorWho.

2) Grete Hermann was a physicist and philosopher who made significant contributions to the interpretation of quantum mechanics. Her critique of Neumann's "proof" of the impossibility of a hidden variable QM "went unnoticed" and was "found" again 30 years later by Bell.
According to (German) Wikipedia, the reasons why it went unnoticed are a) the publication format, b) her being a philosopher, and c) Neumann's reputation. I can think of another obvious reason here... [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grete_Hermann] 4/5

But it is always a bit frustrating to read the CVs of these women, as they are full of "They were not allowed to study/teach/write", and "Then they married and took care of their children", and "They did not find much recognition", and "This man is known for the discovery she made"... 2/5

My "favorite" two examples:
1) Lucy Mensing worked with Lenz, Jordan, Pauli, and Landé on the foundations of quantum mechanics. She published her last (!) journal article in 1930, at the age of 29, when she had her first son. She "helped" her husband (a physics professor) with his work. "In March 1946 she found a job in Jena as a trainee assistant at the mathematical institute" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_Mensing] 3/5

I will give a lecture about #quantum sensing / #gravimetry at an international lecture week for PhD students next week, and realized that the slides I was kindly provided with (thanks, @npub1ws0…x43d) didn't mention any women in the (short) historical sections.
A quick google search revealed some #WomenInSTEM / #WomenInQuantum that I had not heard of before.
Quite a nice overview (with historic and contemporary physicists) can be found here: https://atominnen.at/empower/role-models 1/5
