One good thing came of this: an excuse to buy a new TSWBI Eco, in a limited edition color and a bronze nib for a change. It arrived today and writes like a dream. https://www.jetpens.com/TWSBI-ECO-Caffe-Bronze-Fountain-Pen-Extra-Fine-Limited-Edition/pd/42696

I let some people borrow my TWSBI Eco fountain pen to sign a fancy guest book on Saturday, thinking that it’s plastic and quite sturdy, but one person managed to drop it, while open, on a cement floor, directly nib down. The nib got bent and is not recoverable. I have learned an important lesson about how people used to disposables treat pens, and I will never lend anyone even a cheap fountain pen again unless they are a fountain pen user themselves. I might try to buy a replacement nib, thought it’s almost the cost of a new pen. #fountainpen

There are several people in Poland who have my first initial and last name and they use my email address for their delivery confirmations. I’ve thought about maybe sending them all letters to tell them this is not their email address.
I used to just mark as spam, or unsubscribe, but it’s been getting worse. It would probably creep them out a little bit, but that’s a feature. Stop sensing your personal purchase details to a ransom person in another country.

Back and front of a geranium leaf, fountain pen; contour practice from life
At the Ruth Asawa show this weekend, the curator told me Asawa practiced blind contour drawing her whole life and even her huge and elaborate floral ink drawings were blind contour (always? Sometimes?). How could that be possible!? I decided to learn more about contour drawing and try it myself. This wasn’t pure blind contour and I did lift the pen, but I mostly looked at the leaf.

Sometimes when political life becomes too much I take refuge in the details of doing my job. But lately work, too has been extremely difficult. When things get too much and I’m totally drained, I can’t even bring myself to do art or write. The garden though, the garden seems to remain a refuge. The very fact that it’s so much physical work actually helps. #gardening

Also I took some agaves that were in pots outdoors and put them in the ground. It’s a part of the garden where most plants dry out and look sad all summer.
So I think a mix of ruschia and agave has a good chamce of being happy. It’s a sort of soft agave. I don’t know the exact species. #gardening #sfba

Today, I planted all the new groundcovers I bought in cell packs, elfin thyme and ruschia, as well as the six lupine seedlings. #gardening #sfba

Man, digging is hard. It doesn’t help that there’s a weid layer of plastic grid/mesh under the grass. I think whoever put down the turf maybe unrolled it on some kind of nonbiodegradable wide spaced plastic mesh and now I’m having to tear out microplastics out of the garden bit by bit. Also I keep finding marbles in the dirt.

And this afternoon I’m going to take Mr Dys with me to Flowercraft to help cart some compost home and some additional groundcover cellpacks. We don’t have a car so we take garden supplies on the bus.
That’s also how we transport our Christmas tree. In SF that’s a little unusual but in NYC it seems way more common, which was probably how I thought it would be no big deal and was surprised by the surprise the first time. #gardening #sfba

There’s rain in the 10 day forecast so I’m madly digging up mostly dead grass in my tiny yard before it comes back from the dead. Tomorrow I’m going to sow half my wildflower seed to take advantage of the October rain. #gardening #sfba

Coffee grounds in backyard compost, yay or nay? My compost is a big pile of mostly leaves, dry grass, and yard clippings. It’s decaying a bit too slowly but I don’t want to go full hot compost. I think coffee grounds should balance all the “brown” without attracting animals but I am not sure. #gardening #compost

I want to make a zine before the end of the year. It's been one of my goals. Ideally, one of those simple fold and cut things. I'm thinking I'd do physical cut and paste for the content and then use a copy machine to make copies. Is that still even a thing you can do? Used to be the way you got a zine done was find a friend who worked on the overnight shift at Kinkos and get a discount. I could afford to pay for copies now, just don't know where you go these days.

Mission: Idli at home. I’ve got a four day weekend, an instant pot, and all the ingredients ready to go. First, six hours to soak the dal. #cooking #food

ooh broth is a good idea. I got a rotisserie chicken this week and when we finish eating it, I could make broth with the carcass.

I bought a 6 quart InstaPot on sale. I’ve wanted one for a while but it seemed silly since I already have a rice cooker and a slow cooker.
The first thing I want to make is idli batter using the yogurt setting. I’ve been using instant mix and want to try using idli rava and urad dal. It sounds like a lot of work but less than starting with idli rice.
What’s the second thing I should make?

I planted lavender in my garden a month or so ago and have noticed that it’s doing very well _and_ squirrels don’t fuck with it. So today I bought four more six inch tall lavenders and put them in the ground. I put them under wire baskets for the first two weeks just in case, but once they’re rooted well I’ll uncover them. My drought tolerant garden is slowly coming along, week by week, month by month, year by year. This year though I really must remember to sow wildflowers during the rainy season.

Got my eyes checked ! Still have eyes.
New Year self care item checked off. I feel proud of this one. I went to book it last night and an 8 am today was available, so I nabbed it. My morning meetings were already cancelled because folks were on vacation so it was perfect. I normally procrastinate setting up routine appointments.

What’s your favorite egg substitute for baking? Does it make a difference if it’s for yeast or quick breads?
It need not be vegan or vegetarian as I’m not, just dealing with egg shortage. But it’s a nice bonus if it is!
California is having an egg shortage caused by the bird flu. It’s probably going to be a while and I may as well adapt.

So, real talk, specifically for presentation Q&A and formal meetings, what tips do you suggest to keep myself from impulsively interrupting people? What kind of cues or hints could I use to remember and supress the impulse to answer before they are done?
I'm particularly intersed in tips from other folks with #ADHD

I had no idea I interrupt people this much. Whenver I took those ADHD tests and they ask me if I interrupt people, I'm like, no I think I'm pretty good.
Friends, I am not. (I bet I interrupted my doctor as he was screening me. Do you interrup--No, I'm pretty good at active listening)

2024-12-22 19:22:02 UTC

I watched a recording of my presentation at work and while I'm very happy with my energy and clarity, I noticed a problem with the Q&A portion:
*I interrupt people A LOT*
Some of it is sort of OK, as I just say "yep" "uh huh" and other little phrases to indicate I'm listening.
But I also start answering before people are done and speak over them. I can tell that while some people are OK with that, others get derailed from their point.

I love how you've analyzed the scene and rendered just enough in the painting to capture it. It feels alive and fresh.

@npub1jsu…egp8 At some point you (I think it was you) told me you had a waterproof ink that you used with fountain pens for years and it doesn't ruin the fountain pens. This was in the context of ink you could paint over with watercolors later. If it was you, could you remind me what the ink was? And what fountain pens were compatible with it?

I would like to follow more people who shitpost about critical theory and continental philosophy generally. I need more jokes and sly allusions to Foucault, Lacan, Derrida, Butler, etc. But not just those. I know it’s niche, but it’s a big fediverse. Please help me find them/you!
