A new pull request has been opened at https://github.com/freebsd/drm-kmod/pull/499 to include a #virtio driver in the #FreeBSD #DRM/#KMS graphics stack.
That is great news for all those who are using FreeBSD as a desktop system VM because this will finally allow using e.g. #Wayland or accelerated #X11.

*Big* shoutout to the #FreeBSD team that created #pkgbase and the 15.1 release.
I upgraded 3 different notebooks and a desktop today, each update just took a few minutes.
This was the first upgrade since a very long time that was completely smooth by just following the excellently documented steps in the upgrade notes (https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.1R/upgrading/#upgrade-pkg).
No need to manually deal with incompatible DRM kmods anymore. No searching the web anymore to make sure one doesn't have to fix the system in single user mode.
And simply keeping the system patch level up to date with #pkg is very slick as well.
Thank you very much for all that!

@nprofile…zm8m and P.S. I never managed to reliably get E2E encryption enabled across different messengers with Jabber (even when using some of the publicly available and for sure professionally managed Jabber hosts out there) - the encryption standards are an absolute mess and in my opinion not usable (and i.e.: not secure) in a real-world, federated scenario.

@nprofile…zm8m I can highly recommend #DeltaChat.
I am using it for quite some time, I understand it is reliably secure, the various clients (mobile as well as desktop) are quite usable and usually more polished than e.g. the Jabber clients out there and if you want to, you can self-host as well (the server side is called chatmail).
A South African chatmail instance is on our todo-list, but there already is one available now: https://e2ee.wang/ (and you can relatively easily migrate your identities between instances)

@nprofile…smhh Oh I definitely think they should consider South Africa.
No place on earth is really safe and you always will only know decades later what place was the right one to go to.
In 1939 Paris wasn't in the end, but it also wasn't guaranteed back then that the US was (there were enough fascists there at that time, too).
There definitely are *many* places that are much worse regarding democratic institutions than South Africa and not that many that are really better (and I definitely include Europe here).

How does using the #Jolla #JollaC2 (@nprofile…c4ws) with #SailfishOS for about a week as a daily driver now (with my old #iPhone at home as a backup)?
In general, it works much better than I had hoped after my experiences with other alternative #smartphone systems and it indeed is the first (and so far only) system that indeed works quite well. Also at around 285€ (https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-community-phone) it isn't too expensive, so one can simply try it out.
There are a few limitations though:
* I am really missing biometric unlocking
* There is no predictive text input, so typing could be more comfy
* The UX experience sometimes feels strange (but no no-gos for me)
* It is not a snappy and fast device
* Audio quality is so-so
* GPS really needs a GPS signal, so no WIFI-based location
What is great:
* It is a real #Linux, so it has a #terminal, #sshd, you can e.g. use the #Nix package manager etc.
* Android apps are running in a container
* You can have different users to limit data access
Unfortunately there are nearly no high-quality native apps so far and the built-in ones are very basic (e.g. email).
But: The #Android compatibility layer is very good, the system comes with #Fdroid and #AuroraStore (#Google store front-end) pre-installed, so you can easily install practically all official Android apps.
Most apps work very well, some (especially banking) apps do not though as they complain that the system is rooted, so YMMV regarding the apps you need.
In general I am really happy with this system.
And: All the de-ggoglefied Android phones like the #Volla will always still remain just that: A more limited Android. SailfishOS offers a path towards powerful native (#Qt/#QML/#Cplusplus/#Python/you name it) based apps.
I am hoping that Jolla will provide a significantly more powerful device option and that some of the problems above will be solved.
But already now, even with the limitations above, if you are somewhat technically inclined (but without the need to fiddle with a command line unlike with the open mobile Linux distributions), want to get rid of #Google or #Apple for whatever reason, want a #Linux #smartphone, support a #European company from #Finland, this phone is really usable.

As I understand it, full disk encryption currently does not work with #PostmarketOS, at least with v24.12. (pmbootstrap-installation with FDE does not boot on my PinephonePro...)
As a Plan B I tried to set up #ecryptfs but the kernel module is missing.
Does anybody have a good solution for encrypting at least home on @nprofile…vjnh?
I am looking into getting my #PinephonePro in a state so that it can be used as a daily driver but encryption is mandatory then of course...

@nprofile…7wld @nprofile…c97w There are examples like the official German social.bund.de mastodon server. Also the European Union or Netherlands have official servers.

@nprofile…sr9k Sure, but your posts are more than documentation, they also act as very good PR to show what FreeBSD is used to in real life.
There is a difference between documentation howtos and showing that bsd.cafe as a widely used platform actually and really is using FreeBSD to do all that. 🙂

#GoodNews about #SouthAfricanAirways (#SAA):
"SAA posts R252m profit
This is the company’s first positive bottom line in over 10 years.
South African Airways (SAA) has recorded a net profit of R252 million for the 2022/23 financial year, marking its first positive bottom line since 2012.
Group revenue soared 183%, from R2 billion to R5.7 billion, while Ebitda swung from a negative R1 billion in the previous year to R277 million. This is the first fiscal year of commercial operations since SAA exited business rescue and resumed flights in September 2021.
The airline achieved positive equity of R4.7 billion and completed its final repayment of legacy debt, leaving it debt-free. Interim CEO Professor John #Lamola said the results reflect the airline’s progress toward financial sustainability. [...]"
