yeah i remember during the US-Israel bombings of Iran that Ed Zitron talked about how the war would affect chip prices, and as an aside, said "Iran doesn't care because it can happily kill thousands of its own citizens every day". bizarre thing to say, even more bizarre given the timing

the proton news is only notable because it contradicted their public persona. every tech company is doing this right now. every manager is looking at their developers demanding they automate themselves out of their jobs. "what do you mean we still need human intervention" is a common refrain.

anti-AI folk on Mastodon, there's no point waiting for the bubble anymore tbh. inference is getting cheaper every day and even if the bubble pops and no one trains models anymore, open-weight models are still available and deployable.
creative industries in the future will be capital-driven and deskilling in a way that will put the last 200 years of capitalism to shame.

bioware news hitting me hard. my top 5 games ever have mass effect and dragon age, these are deeply important games to me. i uninstalled bg3 years ago but still have bg1 and 2 installed and play them occasionally. i have 500+ hours in neverwinter nights. this studio's work has been deeply important to me.
the writing's been on the wall for a decade plus, ever since EA acquired them, every single game felt like a miracle for even being released. bioware management not exempt from this criticism as well. but god, the talent was still there for so long, what a massive waste that their swansong has to be something as deeply compomised and flawed as Veilguard.
hope the talent finds new places to thrive. but given the state of this industry i can't help but root for them finding stability elsewhere.

saw some disk horse and i have some news to report that should be sobering - GenAI sentiment may be negative across the world but it is, by and large, very positive across software engineering spaces. Most engineers, both corpo and FOSS, have embraced AI completely, even with the downsides (both in terms of generated code and career instability), and a lot of people who found pleasure in writing code have fully switched over to prompts. Very few of the most talented engineers i know manually write or review code anymore. This industry has been fully scooped.
I don't know what it means for the future, both for this field and my own career. Maybe the field of software engineering alone ends up being the reason this AI bubble never bursts. It is genuinely the case, though, that for the next 5 years nearly all software will be written by AI in every field. Whoever wanted different (including me) is in the minority now.

> On October 10, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and AISA joined hands for a protest in which only AISA leaders made it to the ground. Unlike the CJP leaders, most of AISA’s leadership managed to evade preventive detention.
> How do they manage that?
> “This is not new for us. We have been organising protests on our campuses and getting detained for so long,” said Anjali, who was placed under house arrest when Narendra Modi gave his centenary speech at Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi on September 5, 2026.

people are complaining about Twitter here again? lol. yes it's the social media platform with the childporn chatbot and the nazi owner, but it's also (unfortunately) the main microblogging social media platform most non-US and non-European countries are still on. There is basically no discussion on the India protests over here, for example, other than the few Indians here who also happen to live in India.

2026-10-12 04:50:57 UTC

i'm worried about the protests sustaining momentum long enough for 2029 tbh. Give the reins of the protest to AISA, they're doing a far better job of mobilization and messaging.

we recently found a 4 month old kitten with a broken front paw downstairs. the bones have healed but in the wrong position, and there's nerve damage, so he won't really survive outside for very long. we're currently taking care of a neonatal kitten who's just started weaning, and i also need to take care of Kush, since he's had all his teeth removed recently and he keeps puking out all the food we give him. so it's difficult taking on another kitten as a foster. but we're doing it anyway lol.

i notice this with family and friends as well, because there's no class analysis they don't quite understand that as an employee they're inherently disadvantaged and at the mercy of their employers, and all time will do is give them skill and opportunity at joining the leadership team to eat less shit.
"how can they ask me to work on a weekend?" "how could they pressure me to take on more work than i can?" "how can they try forcing me to make counterintuitive changes to my work to please their upper management?" because they're paying you a salary and you owe them whatever they want, and there are very few laws protecting you from that.

life update, kinda sad:my first cat, kush, has contracted severe gingivitis and stomatitis, and we've had to remove all his teeth. he won't ever be able to chew or bite for the rest of his life. he's only four and a half years old.
work's also been demoralizing, we've now got a whole framework to derive markdown files and pass along in a waterfall-structure to our engineers so they can hand them over to AI agents and supervise the code being generated. we have been told this is how we will work forever now, and we have to stop writing any code whatsoever. this is also part of our KPIs now.

i had an old elden ring ng+ save that I wanted to take to shadow of the erdtree, and damn, i forgot how involved the whole process was. if you want to zoom in from a new game and you're not doing multiplayer, and you want to make things convenient, you have to<li>get through caria manor</li><li>start ranni's quest</li><li>talk to seluvis and blaidd till you trigger the radahn festival</li><li>defeat radahn</li><li>defeat any other ringbearer, like godrick or renalla</li><li>get to altus plateau and leyndell</li><li>defeat godfrey's shade</li><li>defeat morgott</li><li>find one half of the medallion in the albinauric village</li><li>defeat one cave boss and show the medallion to latenna</li><li>get to mountaintop of the giants, to castle sol</li><li>defeat commander niall</li><li>get the other half of the medallion</li><li>get to consecrated snowfield to access the teleporter to mohgwyn palace</li><li>defeat mohg</li>
after all that, you can finally access the dlc

haha no no, i don't think it's AI. there's a popular meme that goes something like "Nintendo, hire this man!" as a reaction to 2010s hyperrealistic Unreal Engine renders of stuff like Mario and Zelda. OoT remake looks very much like that.

ok so it's half brilliant half utterly stupid. the b&b debriefs are embarassing, the naomi-otacon stuff is cringey, the GW JD AI stuff is just word salad after a point. but man the splitscreen action, the boss fights are still great, the stealth gameplay is still p good!
