made some progress with one of the questions I had after identifying the unique patterns among all possible images made by block cellular automaton rule 39: how to identify the patterns not just within each size of CA, but to identify where the same pattern appears in different sizes. this involved working out the repeating units in each pattern.
here are the 387 unique pattern repeat units that occur among CA sizes from 2 to 16 cells.
the unit that's 1 cell wide occurs 8 times (i.e. in every size from 2 to 16); those that are 2 cells wide occur 4 times (only when CA size/2 = even number); those that are 6, 8 and 10 cells wide occur twice; the rest occur only once each.

Among the various patterns produced by applying 2-colour block cellular automaton rule 39 to all 1024 possible initial conditions for a CA size of 10 cells, it seems that there are relatively few unique patterns, not counting translational and rotational symmetries. I count 9 unique patterns so far. working on a way to confirm this estimate mathematically and calculate the number of unique patterns for any given size...

Had some weird results when searching my digital music collection, so I checked out the metadata on the files and it turns out that that each of the FLAC files for Goodbye Kiss by Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes includes the entire draft screenplay for Batman 2 in the lyrics metadata field, which comprises around 7,000 lines of text, formatted exactly the same as this:

Cold, wet and windy down the woods today, with a bit a sleet/snow early on. A few other hardy members there today enduring the elements. Fingers were cold until I'd got halfway round the course and warmed up. Gave out Christmas cards, a bottle of whisky to our field officer and chocolates to our treasurer. Got some practice in with 3 shots on each target. Didn't keep score today, got fairly good grouping, but lost one arrow at the only target on the course that doesn't have a boss behind it (we'll be adding one in the new year).

@nprofile…7rvu yeah, part of the enjoyment of listening to those live sets is in identifying the common elements across different performances, hearing how the vary and how they variously morph from/to other parts

@nprofile…7rvu The AE live sets are pretty similar - also iterative, with recognisable sections appearing in different performances, though not necessarily in the same order, e.g. sometimes a section that's used to start one set might be used the end another one.

@nprofile…jt9v Yes; gold-plated because of its thermal properties. Some earlier Q computers used brass or silver instead, and most also use copper parts too. Each plate cools the computer in stages, with temperatures getting lower on the lower parts. These are called heat exchangers and are used together with dilution refrigerators that use liquid helium.
"Many of the components of the computer are coated in gold. Gold reflects heat and keeps heat away from the parts of the computer that need to be near absolute zero to function."

I like listening to complex/chaotic electronic music at very low volume when going to sleep. The low volume reduces its perceivable bandwidth and dynamic range in a way that also induces hearing it in a different way, e.g. in a different key or on different downbeat, or noticing new aspects of it. Together with near-sleep consciousness, it can also induce a pareidolia effect of imaginary tunes or rhythms.

Down the woods again today. Dry but a bit chilly. Saw lots of birds: Lesser spotted woodpecker, treecreeper, nuthatch, blue tit, great tit, robin, blackbird, wren. And I'm not sure but also saw either a goldcrest or firecrest - smaller than a wren and different shape, but couldn't see its colour clearly as it was silhouetted against the sky. One of the other archers said he'd seen both species around the course previously, identified using the Merlin birdsong app.

Around the pine woodland part of the archery course, you'll often see what I call "squirrels' dinner plates", where they've sat to pull apart pine cones and eat the pine nuts within. You'll find these on any relatively flat surface that's raised a bit above the floor (presumably so they can spot any approaching threat while eating in a more vulnerable position than up in the trees). They're always covered with pine cone scales that have been pulled off the central stem, and there'll be a few stems stripped bare lying alongside. They tend to be found on tree stumps, fallen logs, on the top of archery targets and bosses, and on the table we use for setting up.

Roger Deakin in his house, Walnut Tree Farm, recorded by Chris Watson who fixed microphones around the house for Roger to record in his own time. It was originally broadcast on BBC radio in 2004. I first heard it on a field recording course in 2015 led by Chris Watson and Jez riley French. Chris played it to us one evening on the course, and he insisted that we listened in complete darkness, which was a magical experience. Been down the woods to meet the Forestry England ranger and sign the new annual permit. Then went round the first half of the course to check for fallen trees etc. after the weekend's storm. Thankfully nothing major or dangerous. Got some practice in too, shooting 10 arrows at the first 10 targets then 5 arrows on the rest up to target 22, so had a decent workout.

@nprofile…t09q nice. yeah, it's quite similar in outcome, even though different in mechanism - still attracting (with gravity, not magnetism) but also working against that (with momentum), so it makes similar chaotic patterns.

@nprofile…t09q this is cool, but I wonder why they went with magnets that attract instead of repel, because you can get much more complex and chaotic movements with the latter (or with a combination of both), and which don't come to rest as quickly, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4P1hWJAhVA

Rainy day down the woods. Only me and one other archer there today. Did the whole course, but neither of us shooting our best in the wet. Always good to get out and practice though.

@nprofile…hdn0 that's sure what it looks like, but it could equally be some horrendously complex HRTF thing or a mic in a spinning Pringles tube

@nprofile…t09q Speaking of cool things, the player on the AE_STORE is working better now - previously it kept getting stuck halfway through. Currently listening to the Dublin set while cleaning and analysing some survey data

@nprofile…tjr7 @nprofile…789x I know that Martin Thompson (SM-LL / UAN) used the Sonarworks thing recently, together with some room treatment, and says it's great. Not sure about their room size though. My room is terrible - a 4mx4m cube, so has a lot of resonance. I'd probably be better off investing in bigger monitors first - currently only have 5".

@nprofile…tjr7 @nprofile…789x I don't doubt it. But, on reflection, a sub would be a waste in my current setup - I'd need more space and better layout to get the advantages of the extra low end. Until then, I'll continue to depend on mastering engineers with the right gear and good ears, such as yourself.

Got soaked to the skin, literally, on the walk into town to get the bus this morning. But by the time I arrived at the woods, the rain had eased off a bit, and I dried out gradually. Lots of branches brought down by the recent storm, but thankfully nothing blocking the paths through the woods. Had a decent round despite the wind and rain: broke an arrow but scored 650, with no blanks.
