in the era of surveillance capitalism, enshittification, and ID verification, i've chosen to return to the roots of the internet and have my own site as the source of truth for staying in touch with me where i will always control all the data, decide when it is and isn't available, that cannot be considered social media and used to extract data from users to track them via "verification", and where i am not reliant on someone else providing for my availability online

i wrote a rust microkernel with a federation userspace layer where clusters of trusted machines quietly lend each other idle resources inspired by gift economics.
lend your spare capacity, earn the right to borrow. machines find each other automatically on the same network, bond by consent and shared keys, stay fully independent.
a solar machine lends freely at noon and pulls back at dusk. computation drifts toward wherever the cleanest cheapest energy is.

Instead of "golden grants" for scientists, we have "golden visas" for oligarchs and capitalists.
Instead of deploying 100+ GW of new renewable energy for tens of millions of homes, we have datacenters leaving no energy for residential areas and costing them more in direct and environmental expenses.
Instead of restoring millions of acres of degraded ecosystems that sequester carbon, we have Mr. Chat Gipity that parrots a bunch of inaccurate bullshit all day.

Imagine if all the money being put into "AI" was used for wildlife conservation, climate restoration and stabilization, universal health care, universal basic income, scientific research, education, renewables.
Some of these areas would be permanently world-altering in a positive way if they received that kind of funding.

hearing rfk jr talk about how girls are entering puberty at ever younger ages while simultaneously stating that teenage boys have half the testosterone and sperm count of a 65 year old man might sound like public health concerns about what is disrupting our ideal ages for reproduction if you're a dumbass or a man
but as a woman who has experienced adult men's attention since the age of 10 (every woman tbh), here's what he's really saying:
old men should be allowed to get little girls pregnant

this is the same major issue with monotheistic religions. they're all based on authoritarian models, which is why they take the top spots in global prevalence and have problems with direct and systemic violence. co-opting ideas from others, appropriating and perverting them, and then finally exerting control with them.
anything with this model is both a direct and moral failure IMO.

2025-09-20 23:41:44 UTC

every once in a while i get consulted about solarpunk themed intentional communities and each time i say that the land and space has to be in a trust so that everyone who lives there owns it, i get pushback that it can't be that way or that a singular person will own it but benevolently. IMO this will always fail. whether good intentioned or not, a singular point of power is an authoritarian model.

There's a lot of discussion about which operating systems, applications, and platforms are more transparent and privacy-respecting than others. Concern about one's privacy is prudent. As the saying goes, it's not about having nothing to hide. Everyone has something to hide (i.e., social security number, home address). It's about others not having permission to view without your consent.

it just is what it is. the people who created this world can't be mad at it. or maybe they can. that's how religion and gods seem to work isn't it?
the untouchable hubris-filled land of degenerates with infinite resources and nothing to do but be judgmental and cruel with no consequences. the old form of govt-turned-mass-delusion has been quite a model for humanity.

2024-12-06 13:41:37 UTC

to anyone saying the broadly resonating vibe people have in the US over a monster being shot dead is bad, remember that sentiment like this is a symptom of what the capitalists have created.
the people who feel good about the news are not the source of the illness in this country.
it's the unrelentingly violent wealthy class of people and their capitalist overlords that dreamt up such a world, meticulously planned it, rolled it out with infinite safety nets, and are reaping what they've sown.

2024-11-13 13:22:12 UTC

The average American psyche is fundamentally broken. I realize this is news to no one. There is a pervasive mindset here rooted in capitalistic individualism that says: “I suffered, so you must suffer. Ideally more than I did.” It’s a pay it forward system of hate and punching down and closing doors behind oneself. It’s exhausting, saddening, and frankly no amount of “feel good” posts from a handful of people with rare mindsets in a place that concentrates them is going to change how it feels.

i see so much focus on how to prevent or mitigate climate crises. i would argue there are better focus angles at this point.
/we/ can't do anything to prevent or mitigate it because /we/ are not the unimaginably wealthy interests that drive the world. a machine doesn't care about the condition of the cog inside the machine. it will rev and push and strain it until the cog breaks, then a new cog will replace it.
we need to be talking more about how to ride the wave that is already here.
