So wait… whole tens of fraudulent voters from the second *largest* group?! The dastardly Canadians been exporting children to be secretly adopted so Canada can influence American elections?!
The horror of it!

Every rice cooker I have ever owned is built this way - very simple machines - and they work great, just as they did in the 50s

Apparently gourds (from cucumber to pumpkin) will at first only produce male flowers (requiring less energy), so there’s almost always a waiting period of several weeks after the first flowers for the plant to mature enough to produce female flowers that can actually set fruit.

Yeah, it’s rather hard to ignore the inherent misogyny and bigotry in ‘I would rather bribe people who don’t want children into having them anyway than let *those* people be my neighbours’

Yup, I think you’re right: the Gestapo gestapo-ing someone you hate along with all the others really is nothing to cheer about. But the Gestapo tearing each other to shreds in infighting dominance battles? I can’t blame anyone who brings popcorn for that show.

I keep thinking that the existence of data centres that “can’t” be shut down is used as A) justification for mountains of injustice, B) justification for using dirty (but ‘reliable’) power sources, C) a giant data liability risk.
IANA-IT guy but: Every data centre should be subject to strict emissions restrictions, and be required to have a ‘safe’ shut down plan that can be activated on a reasonable time scale (12 hours?) and then be SOL in crisis.

When the crash comes, so will the pressure to bail out all the players that are “too big to fail”
Those bailouts have happened a number of times already in just the first quarter of this century.
Remember kids:
1. “too big to fail” just means “too big”
2. the remedy for “too big” is dismemberment or incineration.

I completely agree with you.
Note that as recently as 50 years ago, it was received common knowledge that *human infants* were just nervous switchboxes, making grimaces, noises, and gestures out of pure reflex… ‘don’t worry, infants don’t really experience pain’ they said as the child screamed in the background.
The world with dreaming spiders is a much more wonderful, beautiful, and exciting place than what those folks were showing me.

Out driving to pick up one of my kids and passed K-Days emptying out of all its people. Wind, rain, hail, thick enough to make driving even slowly nearly impossible. 😬
Stay in and stay safe Edmonton!

I keep seeing comments about how we are at a tipping point only barely (or not quite) containing fascists in countries around the world. It is right to be concerned, but this framing contains an important implied falsehood: that fascists will soon out number us.
So this is my reminder that even in times of peril like today: fascists are *always* a minority.
They only win when we - the majority - cannot or will not stand in solidarity against them.

There are people for whom boosting feels uncomfortable for taking up space, or feels risky, or too socially adventurous.
As someone who was at times a painfully shy child, I would say let’s have patience rather criticism.
There are also people who have long experience in other social media, and don’t grasp the shared responsibility we take for each other when there is no algorithm to build our feeds for us.
I think they also need encouragement rather than blame.

If the concerns are that landlords will raise rents, then rent controls are in order.
If the concerns are that landlord’s can’t make enough profit, then boo-hoo … get out of the business.
If the concern is that units will be removed from the market, pass bylaws forbidding that.
If the concern is that landlords will dump now unprofitable properties, be ready to hoover them up into tenant owned and focussed co-ops or municipal housing banks.

At least one indoor living space besides the bathroom “with a “safe indoor temperature of an average of 26 C” between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m - ie overnight.
Is a pretty low bar, and doesn’t address daytime temperature spikes, but it’s a start.

But we have all been raised in a supremacist culture that casually dehumanizes people left, right, and centre, and we absorb those words and patterns, and can easily use them without thinking. Dehumanizing language should be a third rail we’re super careful to avoid so we can confidently use the jarring, uncomfortable language we need to draws attention to the awfulness being done in the world.

Absolutely, I agree that we should not censor our language to make ugly things polite… (I grew up with enough German culture that shit is shit not poop or number 2 or whatever someone’s waspy grandma wants it to be) The ugly things we are fighting are ugly, they are awful, and the language that describes it needs to be jarring, ugly, awful, and uncomfortable if it’s going to be accurate.

Absolutely: fight like hell, call a spade a spade… even make mistakes, we’re all human. And we can be self-reflective and learn while we’re doing that, I think. And because of that, I would be careful to call someone a motherfucker, or an ass, or a shithead rather than a pig. 🤷‍♂️

2026-04-19 01:52:06 UTC

To inject a little caution: I’m all for calling a supremacist a supremacist, an asshole an asshole, a motherfucker a motherfucker… based on what they say, believe, and do.
But crossing the line that dehumanizes them is oh so easy & feels so good. But if we do that we’re the same as them, just in a different ‘tribe’; and then it’s easy then to forget that evil in this world is done by ordinary people just like you and I.

I’m hoping someone will launch a discrimination suit against the Olympics with the goal of requiring them to test *everyone* or *no one*. If a knowing person’s genetic makeup is truly needed, then it should be required of every one, men and women and everyone else. How else can men’s sport be protected against unfair competition?
#Olympics #TransRights

2026-03-27 14:38:38 UTC

If this was somehow a problem, then over the last 20 years women’s Olympic sport would have been swamped by winning trans women. It hasn’t - so all the theorizing amounts to a bunch of post-hoc handwaving justification for prejudice. There is solid experimental evidence that trans women begin to lose whatever edge they may have had only months into HRT.
It’s straight up bigotry.

A magpie story: two years ago in June, a wind storm blew a fledgling magpie out of the nest at the top of the neighbour’s towering blue spruce. Most of its siblings were able to flutter to a new roost, but this runt was left behind in our yard with an injured leg and not yet able to fly. It was a perilous week that included hazing from unrelated adult magpies, hiding from the other neighbour’s cat, the local coyotes, and crows.
