OK, so the people who were surprised to see their posts being boosted — that likely happened because their instance was subscribed to one of these public relays?

2026-06-28 15:06:52 UTC

- reply

Thanks. I think this is all important nuance that’s being lost. It seems like most people think this was a blind scraper.
At worst, the tags.pub documentation did not make clear enough that posts it saw — posts it was *specifically given permission to use* by instance admins or users — would be sent to relays, or which relays those were.
(That is, if I’m still understanding all this correctly, which I may not be.)

2026-06-28 14:57:06 UTC

- reply

OK so:
1. Instance admin connects to tags.pub relay
2. Instance user posts a hashtag
3. tags.pub sees the post and boosts it
4. The boost is sent to other, potentially objectionable instances through the public relays
Is that right?
That still seems “opt-in,” but through the actions of the instance admin rather than the user. *Somebody* related to the user/instance did take *some action* that resulted in these posts being sent to the relays.
tags.pub didn’t proactively go out and start scraping these posts without having been told about them.

2026-06-28 14:47:02 UTC

- reply

So the people who were surprised to see this — was their instance relaying with tags.pub? Or was their instance relaying with another relay that connected to tags.pub?
How were their posts being boosted?

2026-06-28 14:31:17 UTC

- reply

How was tags.pub boosting posts from people who hadn’t followed its follow back bot? Is relaying your instance with tags.pub equivalent to having all your users follow the follow back bot?

2026-06-28 13:02:19 UTC

- reply

> tags.pub is now unsubscribed from the open registration relay servers it was previously using.
Hm I’m confused about this. What were these relay servers specifically and why was tags.pub using them? And how did this result in posts being visible in ways that surprised users?

2026-06-28 06:06:52 UTC

- reply

Oh I see, right, you have to opt-out as a user if your instance has connected to the relay.
Is that what their relay does? Sends all your posts to all other instances that also subscribe to the relay?

2026-06-28 05:46:31 UTC

- reply

I thought it was opt-in? As in it completely ignores you if you don’t follow the follow-back account. Unless I’m missing something.
I don’t understand that “opting out” section on the site, though.

I think for most normies, to exist at all is to exist on Instagram. And to many, an Instagram account *is* your identity. It’s a portfolio of your personal brand. It’s the fullest and most true digital expression of yourself, or at least the person you want people to think you are.
It’s like a dating profile, but for, just…life.

Step away from your screens, let your psyche absorb the blow, and read about it in a newspaper tomorrow morning if you like. You have permission!

I think what people need to understand is that using the Fediverse instead of Bluesky doesn't mean you aren't subject to these laws. It just means that the people who run your instance are more free to flaunt them if they choose.
I think what people are trying to say to you Eugen is that it might be advisable to tell Fediverse instance operators that this is something they should be aware of and make an informed decision about.

If you want an ebook of some public domain work, either:
1. Check standardebooks.org before Gutenberg. They clean up books from Gutenberg with sane typography and print design.
2. Consider buying a "Dover Thrift Editions" version of the ebook. Many fly-by-night ebook "publishers" are turning a quick buck on selling you a Gutenberg edition. Dover is a real publisher, even in print, and their well-formatted ebooks of public domain works are usually under $4, or even less.

Oh, I mean, when Mastodon *does* have native quote posts available via their API, where the native user preferences are respected, then the third-party fetching should stop. It's deliberately circumventing a safety feature at that point.

2025-02-14 19:45:37 UTC

- reply

This analogy could get messy if we explore it any longer, but my point is that impediments to doing bad things, even imperfect impediments, are good.
Responsible developers will make Mastodon clients that obey user’s wishes, and the extra effort required to find the quoted post will likely deter enough people to make the feature worthwhile.

Yes, of course anybody *can* fetch something that isn't followers-only. Just like you *can* log out of Twitter and see tweets from someone who has blocked you.
But adding that extra hurdle makes it inconvenient and therefore less likely.

2025-02-14 19:16:34 UTC

When quote-posts become baked into #Mastodon and available via the API, I hope clients stop fetching quoted posts on their own.
Part of Mastodon's implementation will be the ability for people to prevent quote-posting of their content, and to "withdraw" their posts from anywhere they were quoted.
"Faking" quote-posts by merely fetching the post object from within the client will not respect these preferences and intentions of the quoted user.

I bought a CD on eBay. It just arrived in an Amazon box, with a gift receipt, along with six metal rings -- evidently for horse bridles -- also with gift receipts.
The only possible explanation is that the eBay seller didn't even possess the CD. They sent it as a gift to me from Amazon, and added the 75¢ rings to hit the free shipping minimum.
And I paid way more on eBay than I would have on Amazon.

The fact that Mullenweg keeps harping on #WPEngine’s lack of upstream contributions — something that is by no means required by anybody using #WordPress — demonstrates how weak he knows the copyright claim is.
If it were a strong case, he could just quietly file the cease and desist and not go on and on about the values of open source, which are irrelevant to whether a copyright has been violated.
