someone bought a used CPU and attempted to play Valorant (which already is quite a choice of a videogame but I'll leave it to user's taste) and... was kicked out right away
why? because prev. owner was cheating there, and Riot blacklisted user via CPU serial number. when he contacted Riot, not only they didn't budge but blacklisted entire setup https://www.reddit.com/r/PCBaumeister/comments/1wqomor/gebrauchte_cpu_erlaubt_kein_valorant/

apparently Labour Digital (tech lobby group within Labour party) is going to have a panel debate at party conference about tech sovereignty
funny enough, I have previously written to them few years ago trying to convince them into diverging from centralised social media platforms, more digital autonomy etc. - but they brushed it off
now that I have written for Mainstream Labour about digital sovereignty, seems the shift has happened :D

this is bad news - and Ukraine might have even worse winter than the previous one. why? because Ukraine cannot rely on Starlink when striking targets in russia because it doesn't work there.
meanwhile, russian satellites will work above Ukrainian territory - meaning there isn't going to be any safe place.
while Musk is sabotaging Ukraine again.

this is nothing short of a genocide. maybe not necessarily in its direct sense, but a cultural & linguistic one - and I think it's even worse because when the culture & language are wiped out, then ethnicity/nation completely ceases to exist.

so if I understand correctly: his previous record as MP (that deserves criticism) counts as an argument against him coming back to national politics...
but his mayoral record doesn't count as an argument to come back to national politics and implement same popular policies, should he become PM?

hard disagree, and I say this as a Mancunian.
he's been favourablly polling ratings among all UK politicians on a national level; he was popular enough to hold Gorton & Denton had Labour's NEC not stopped him from being nominated – if anything, this only boldened people (including people living in Manchester) wanting him to come back to national politics.
he's the best antidote so far against far-right & far-left populism that is currently poisoning society.

ofc there's a question on how to spend aka the output, and a complete rethinking for European countries is needed (i.e production of drones, unmanned vehicles etc.). if anything, lessons from how US conducts the war in Iran - aside from Russia/Ukraine war - can't be more clear.
it's a chance to decouple from dependency on Americans in armaments. sadly Europeans are too slow to adapt. it's not a problem unique for UK though.

2026-04-19 17:13:22 UTC

- reply

and do you know why? because since the end of Cold War European countries have been consistently reducing it for many reasons. whether it's because of naive belief that with the fall of USSR there are no threats anymore, or because of relying on Americans for armaments (which clearly bites in the ass now) - doesn't matter. fact of the matter is, 3% is a bare minimum now.

even in vacuum that argument is tbh empty because it is the same for any other public services. spending more money is important (and ofc I'm all for increasing spending in NHS, more social housing, public transport etc.), but so is spending it effectively.
say, you can spend billions on social housing, but if its quality is poor (i.e lacks insulation, quality of building materials is poor etc.) then it isn't efficient, no matter how much money you throw at it.

in addition, he cynically frames Robertson's report & suggestions as if it's the only way to fund defence and that it's always about cutting in welfare or public services (i.e the same rhetoric used by tankies & useful idiots), which isn't true.
lack of coordination is a problem but far from the main & biggest one for European armies. but then again, one needs to follow the news about wars, defence tech, or NATO trainings, rather than spread ideological narratives.

just read the referred article and it's full of shit.
1. he omitted that Finland committed to increase up to 3% by 2029.
2. on a broader point, saying Finland is "one of the best prepared" doesn't mention the fact that they have an advantageous terrain & weather which complicates ground invasion.
3. Estonia spends 3% now, in comparison. Poland spends 4%. are they wrong, by author's logic?
4. ironically he doesn't talk about how Tories austerity politics affected defence as well.

even in that case, I wouldn't say it's different on magnitude level. right-wing populists are being scrutinised regularly, same as left-wing populists. ofc in partisan media such as GBNews or Canary you won't see much criticism of their own allies – but that's why they're partisan.
I wouldn't say that BBC or LBC, for example, is covering up criticism or coverage of Farage's racist remarks and his policies, while they criticise only Polanski's proposals.

only in Eastern Europe progressive left party can criticise right-wing president for dragging with rearmament and increase in its defence production & capabilities.
something for Western "activist" left to learn 💪 and British too - which they won't, of course, seeing them being triggered by Ed Davey's suggestion to develop it own nuclear arsenal and instead advocating for self-sabotaging unilateral disarmament.

let me also put it this way: if there would be a protest supposedly against Islamist regime, where co-organiser would be Robinson/Farage or people affiliated with them, and certain Labour MPs would attend it, you'd condemn it bc it means indirectly endorsing far-right. and that's true!
yet when it comes to the supposedly "anti-war" protests organised by pro-regime organisations, we're supposed to give prominent politicians the benefit of the doubt? because they're "progressives"?

2026-03-06 11:04:13 UTC

- reply

I didn't mean that you're invoking religion, it's Ali who did it by deflecting criticisms of him attending the protest as Islamophobia. following that logic, that makes Muslims who criticise him for attending it Islamophobes or racists?
as for who organised it: no need to attend it or even see how GB News reported - you can take a look at the announcement by organisers yourself https://www.ihrc.org.uk/hands-off-iran-flash-protest-today-10-downing-street/
GPEW's explanation is the same as Ali's deflections: bad and shameful.

2026-03-06 10:50:28 UTC

with all due respect:
– it was organised (at the very least co-organised) by two pro-regime organisations, IHRC and CASMII, not even mentioning pro-russian and pro-assadist StW
– it did feature pro-regime placards
these organisers can claim being anti-war all they want; it doesn't change the fact that it was a pro-regime protest, first and foremost. and spinning every single criticism of attending it as "Islamophobia" is shameful. does that make me, a Muslim, also Islamophobe?

it's genuinely shameful how relatively little news & updates about protests in Iran against Islamist regime have been posted in Fediverse, and meanwhile the number of protesters killed is already at least 2,000 – some report it's already exceeding 12,000 and live munition is used against protesters end masse.
even worse when posts in support attract tankies & other clueless leftists saying it's CIA/Mossad staged.

some late night thoughts about law 12414 in Ukraine that undermines anti-corruption agencies.
what Zelensky & Yermak are doing now is going down Yanukovich's path and feeding the narratives for left & right wing populists who itch to see Ukraine fall.
it is a shameful day, and state 404 will inevitably use the division it has done in Ukrainian society to make things worse.

finished reading Ardern's memoir and it left me more convinced that she is one of the best world leaders in recent years. maybe she wasn't as much leftwing as some people wanted, or disagreed with some of her policies, but she truly offered a different kind of power – one based on compassion, listening and care.
it is also a reminder that in the current world of polarisation & radicalisation - no matter the topic - we urgently need the opposite.

and as a part of this ongoing crackdown against opposition, Erdogan regime has started restricting access to social media

after today, do I need to explain why Europe must urgently invest in its own defence by increasing spending and supporting more arms production independently of USA?
America has turned into a "capitalist" China: authoritarian country with a huge economy - and Europe has to take its own future and defence into their own hands and stop relying on USA.
there is absolutely no turning back from this.

Mozilla is done as a company. their new privacy policy is an absolute fucking disaster and a stab in the back.
"To market our services" section is genuinely not much different from what Google is doing with Chrome; Review Checker is useless if you also push sponsored content as a part of it'; collecting "all data types to comply with applicable laws..." - this is all sad.
use LibreWolf instead for daily purposes.

typically, Apple bent over the gov't requests, as I feared. possibly the next step will be to force Apple into working with the gov't like how China forces.
few lessons from here:
1. Apple are not your friends when it comes to privacy, and they never will be.
2. encrypt and backup with your own keys and independently of the big tech platforms.

"this could be what set the student off" – I doubt that: I checked out her thread before she made her account private and it's straight delusion aka "China is egalitarian, they're not imperialist, only evil USA is imperialist" etc. Besides, even with your framing of a situation, it's moronic to think colonialism happens only in Palestine.
On your second part about searching for "Muslim bubble": sadly I can't help on that, but @npub14ct…km94 is worth following. He may know more.

you're spot on about it. Asian Muslims are in fact more understanding and supportive towards Uyghurs, unlike their counterparts. And they're not as fundamentalists – at least of those I met myself

2025-01-29 12:00:14 UTC

being a Muslim myself, unfortunately this is absolutely true.
majority of Muslims and those who pretend to care about human rights downplay, justify or defend genocide of Uyghurs, or don't consider it worthy talking about them because they're merely pro-eastern imperialists or plain Islamists.

yeah, I'm aware of that – also, there's no 2FA for email login. Sadly there are trade-offs, but they're not unfixable: you can either use POP3 to download emails and remove from mailserver, always use PGP encryption, or regularly clean up inbox.
I could have also recommended Riseup (which is also very good!) but it is useless unless you have someone who can send invitation – although, from my personal preference, I'd still prefer European-located service.

there is already a "Free Our Feeds" decentralised ecosystem.
it is called Fediverse.

man how much I love Signal/Molly compared to WhatsApp even from UX (contrary to some people who tell me "Signal is too difficult")
on GrapheneOS it is possible to set contact scopes (which works similar to media scope), but while adding scope for Signal/Molly doesn't make linked contacts, WA does that, so even if you remove access, that WA duplicate persists as read-only
removing them requires to reinstall WA & add scope by number

well my point is that CSAM automated tools aren't error-free, and there has to be some mitigation against false positives. I totally accept that my approach may not be the right one, but that's why there should be discussion on finding the one that takes all aspects into consideration
In future, maybe CSAM scanning algorithms will be polished to perfection and we can rely solely on them. And I genuinely hope that would be the case. But as of right now, I'm skeptical about it

2024-12-17 10:20:32 UTC

on the last point: assuming someone uses Google or CloudFlare, it will require to put trust into either of these providers that their CSAM scanning algorithms don't flag anything by mistake. And they're not immune to mistakes.
Wouldn't it be better to outline that CSAM scans should be used as a tool for identifying potential harmful content with mandatory human review rather than "if CSAM scanning flags smth, it's objectively true and you must comply regardless of the outcome"?
