October is Black History Month in the UK.
Black History in the UK is incredibly complex and underrepresented. This month, take time to learn more about the struggles black and mixed-race people have faced through British history.

As our Foundation focuses our efforts to grow the Social Web in new areas, our 62-topical Channels will be phasing out to be replaced by tags.pub.
We encourage all Channel users to join the tags.pub project by opting in and sharing with hashtags. For more details on how to use tags.pub, please check out: https://tags.pub/
Please share this message so all Channel users are aware and so that we can continue growing discovery on the Social Web.

"Culture used to be a river. Broadcast platforms and public feeds carried ideas wide and fast. Today the river is splintering into streams, tributaries, and hidden pools."
This article by Brad Davidson is a brilliant insight into the shift away from algorithmic feeds towards small sanctuaries, highlighting the craving for social in our social media consumption.

We wouldn't be able to do what we do without our friends who work by our side to advocate for, and create, a better social media landscape.
This year, we've seen so many of them at events such as @nprofile…72j4, Rebuild, IJF, @nprofile…6xdl, and many more.
We're so lucky to work in such a thoughtful passionate space in amongst the wider world of social technology 🧡

Happy Pride Month!
With a number of LGBTQ+ people on the team here at the Newsmast Foundation, #Pride is very close to our hearts.
But, we know that for many people Pride doesn't look like a parade or a party. For some, it's a quiet moment at home, a chance to reflect, to hold loved ones closer, to think of those who threw the first rocks.
Pride is a celebration. Pride is a protest. Pride is hope for all the #LGBTQ+ people across the world who aren't yet able to live freely.

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
This year #IDAHOBIT explores the themes of democracy and the role LGBTQIA+ people and their rights play in signalling true democracy.
Here in the UK, we're seeing the safety of LGBTQ+ people decline rapidly. Data published earlier this week by ILGA-Europe now places the UK as 22nd in Europe for LGBTQ+ protections. In 2015, the UK led in these rankings.
We have to do more.

It's been a busy couple of weeks here at the Newsmast Foundation.
After visiting #FediMTL in Montréal last week, then going straight to Wales for the launch of the Tŵt app with @nprofile…3qky , then to Copenhagen for Rebuild, whilst attending @nprofile…72j4 online, you might think we're going to quiet down for the next couple of weeks 👀
Wrong!

Local community is essential.
At the Newsmast Foundation, we're working to support local communities by providing digital spaces for them to come together. Places they can organise, and inform as a collective.
The Community Power report by Local Trust amplifies our message, that by providing space to come together, communities can strengthen beyond their differences.

Social media shouldn't feel like a toxic relationship.
On Valentine's Day, we're asking people and organisations to take control of their relationship with social media.
Set boundaries, communicate your needs, and move on if they're not being met. We deserve to use social media that values us, rather than our data.
There are plenty of fish in the sea, we just need to show them that the biggest isn't always the best 👀

You wouldn't host your community in a casino.
Addictive algorithms, amplified hateful content, doomscrolling. It's time to call social media what it is: dangerous.
As a society, we need to work harder to detangle ourselves from these places and the behaviour they encourage.
How are you creating distance between yourself and harmful social media?

January 20th is, for many, a normal day.
However, we must acknowledge that a year ago today, the US saw a shift in power which has (unfortunately) rippled across the globe.
A year on, we think it's fair to say that, whilst we are still horrified by the decisions, language, and actions of the US administration (and beyond), the initial hopelessness is beginning to dissipate.
We're fighting back, finding new ways to come together, and staying strong.

Towards the end of 2025, we saw realisation across Europe and beyond of the danger of reliance on US technologies.
In 2026 we want to ensure this momentum grows, with communities, publishers, and even governments turning their back on US social technologies.
This isn't just the technology which already exists and has proven untrustworthy, but also new and emerging US technologies which are still under the thumb of the US government.
