Mum has gotten away a few times lately.
I put a child-proof cover on the door knobs of the exterior doors.
So far, Mum can't figure them out.
I hate this.

It absolutely should be up to the parents. Most of the issues we're seeing are due to parents who aren't engaged with their kids.
Governments, regardless of policy preference, are ill-equipped to fix that sort of fundamental problem.
From the government's perspective, they just need to roll something out that they can point at and say: "See, we've responded." That a list of other countries have already gone down this road gives them some cover.

That's fine, but polling finds a pile of public support.
"Seven in ten Canadians, 70%, support banning social media access for children under 16, including 44% who strongly support such a ban. Support for banning AI chatbots for children under 16 is nearly identical, at 69%, including 41% who strongly support it."

I worked with a German speaker from Switzerland. Good fellow, very diligent at his job.
We were out for a meal and drink at the end of a long week. I asked him the difference between German-Swiss and Germans from Germany.
"Oh, that's easy. We're Germans without the sense of humour."
I'm still not sure if he was serious or not.

I took a mandatory technical writing course for engineers and science majors. The first semester was as expected, no issues.
The professor couldn't teach the second semester, and a substitute was found. She decided we should read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
I had no prior experience with Joyce, read a few dozen pages and was left bewildered.
I wasn't the only one, and the next class deteriorated into a shouting match between the prof and the students. We wanted the curriculum and not whatever-the-hell this was.
She was replaced after a few more classes and the course returned to the mechanics of technical writing. I'm sure she was left with strong opinions of the heathens from the science and engineering faculties.
I still bristle at the mention of Joyce, and bear a small grudge against the Irish.

Autodesk Construction Cloud uses AWS as infrastructure.
Our connections have been dodgy today.
We have a lot of projects stored there and it's causing headaches.
I was one of the ones grumbling about loss of control and over-reliance on outsides services.
Nothing will really be changed though. Outsourcing was so much cheaper than maintaining our own systems, apparently.

Stellantis is a basket case made up of smaller basket cases (PSA (itself made of Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall), FIAT and Chrysler)
After the formation in 2021/22, they took a bunch of underperforming companies with poor reputations and amalgamated them into a Voltron of Suck, and have been bleeding money and market share ever since.
Fiat is all but dead, again, in North America, Dodge and Chrysler are down to minivans and poorly received "full-sized" sedans/coupes, which have already required updates before even fully launching. Ram is soldiering along, while Jeep has suffered an increasing number of quality issues and has seen stagnating sales as their prices got far too ambitious.
I'm sure that the state governments will be throwing money their way to secure a plant, but I'm not so sure the company will survive long enough for the plant to make it to production.

Along a similar vein, I just recently picked up a new F150 Lightning EV.
It's larger than I need admittedly, but there were thousands in incentives available, making it cheaper than the Ioniq5 or ID4.
Twin motors give 450hp and 770ft-lbs torque, awd, four wheel independent suspension. It's got the standard range 98kWh battery, rated at 380km range, but realistically closer to 320kms. It's also got a huge comfortable cab and a "frunk" larger than most sedan's boots.
The MSRP was $75k CAN, roughly £40k before manufacturer's incentives.
So far, I'm very happy with it. I had kept my Touareg TDI "just in case", but I'll be selling it now.

This was the most common pickup back int he 1980s. Three-across seating and an 8' (2.4M) long bed. It was designed around hauling dimensional lumber and building materials. The bulk of them were bought by tradesman, farmers and the like.
The most common pickups now have enormous cabs with seating for 5 or 6, and tiny beds (5.5' (1.7m) being common), more suitable for hauling a few bikes or bags of black earth. A huge number are now bought by suburbanites and used for little to nothing more adventurous than commuting.

I was wondering about the relative cost of EV and gas cars back in the day.
It appears a 1911 Baker Electric ran about $860 (~$29k in today's money) compared to $780 ($25k) for a 1912 Ford Model T.
But the Model T's price dropped over time as Ford optimized their production line. By the end of its production run in 1927, it cost about $260 ($4800).

German auto brands have been using structural adhesives for something like 30 years.
Instead of using dozens of pinch welds, they'll use adhesives and a few select weld points to maintain the shape while the adhesives cure.
This was especially important when working with aluminum body structures that Audi helped pioneer for mass market use.
Fenders are still typically bolted on and not structural. Of course doors, trunk and hood are bolted hinges to allow for adjustment.
The only ladder style frames Ford use currently are in the pickups and pickup based large SUVs. It's the same at GM.
Ford has been using unibodies since the 1950s, on and off. The 1958 Continental below was an early unibody Ford product. At 5.8m long, 2m wide, 1.4m tall and weighing in at 2.5tonnes, it was an engineering challenge to be sure.

Kyle Connor has a bunch of EV based YouTube Channels, and is known for his technical deep-dives.
He's generally been positive on Tesla vehicles. He tries to avoid the political stuff. It's not as easy as it used to be.
His personal Cybertruck has had a number of faults only some addressed by recalls/OTA updates.
The latest incident involved the complete failure of one of the inverters/drive motors, apparently a known issue on tri-motor CTs.
And yesterday it bricked itself completely while parked in his garage.

They set up benches and artistic warming huts along the trail.

The problem is that while driving, snow accumulates in the recess that the headlights are mounted in.
With old school halogen headlights, recessing wasn't an issue as they were generally hot enough to melt the snow.
LEDs don't melt the snow, so it accumulates. Other pickups use flush mounted lighting and generally haven't had an issue, at least not that I've heard.

The main issues the guy was experiencing were the light from the top light bar reflecting off of the falling snow obscuring the road ahead and the recessed LED headlights being repeatedly covered in snow.
Both are caused by the style over function of the truck.
If the light bar could be shut off manually, and the headlights were mounted flush with the front of the truck, it wouldn't be as bad.
Amateur hour design decisions.

I wonder how old that is. Cheque book? 🤣
Really different at our place growing up in the '70s.
Dad got us up in the morning, if we were still in bed. He'd stick his head in the bedroom door: "UP!" If he had to come back a second time, he'd reach under the covers and grab you by the ankle and pull you out onto the hardwood floor, with prejudice. We dressed ourselves from grade 1 onwards. Beds had to be made and room tidied before we had breakfast.
Breakfast was either porridge or cold cereal. Mum made the sandwiches for lunch in the early grades. We took the bus to school. If we missed it, we walked. Returning home was not an option.
Same on the return trip. Detention would last long enough for the buses to leave, so we'd walk home if that was the case. On a couple of occasions Dad was on his way home and passed me walking. He didn't stop. And there was no way I'd try to flag him down. Because the shit would REALLY hit the fan then.
Homework was our problem. If grades were poor, it was REALLY our problem. Once I hit grade 5, both folks would be at work when we got home. I'd put whatever food Mum had left in the oven to heat up. Homework was started, and usually done by the time they got home.
Dad had a few suits that needed dry cleaning. He looked after that himself. Mum insisted on ironing his shirts because she didn't like the way he did it. We ironed our own stuff, what little needed ironing.

Don't cut taxes until you can afford to. The only tax measures they should be looking at is increases in capital gains tax, elimination of corporate loopholes and tax breaks, and a new top marginal tax rate of 80% on income over $4M/yr (the old top marginal rate from the 1960s).
There was a time when corporate taxes made up 30% of federal revenue. It's down around 10% now. That needs to change.

For me, the temp wasn't such an issue as the bike would get squirrely at low temps.
Sport tires especially would get hard and lose traction. Always the risk of getting into a snow squall too.
A friend of mine ages ago did ice racing on a KX500 with studded tires. It's pretty physical, so the temp wasn't his biggest worry.
Another friend still does snowmobile drag racing. Could be down in the -30s and they're out in the open on a frozen lake doing drags. 😆
That's too much, even for me.
At least with cold, you can always pile on more clothes. I struggle with heat. I used to do work in the US south. At one power plant a thermometer was showing 135F inside the plant. I damned near died. No idea how people function working in that.

I flew in a candidate for a project years ago in Regina. That morning it was -38C and with the breeze it was in the mid -40s.
When he got to the office he just said: "I can't do this. This weather is inhuman. Sorry for wasting your time."
I said to the manager: "We really need to stop interviewing in January."

Got my first shingles shot today.
Super tired, but fine so far.

À propos of nothing, here's Deteriorata from National Lampoon's 1972 album "Radio Dinner" featuring Norman Rode as Narrator and Melissa Manchester on vocals.

"Broop, Foob, to the principal's office. I saw what you did to Chunus. And for the love of god, Asheliigymne wake up.
Why can't you kids be more like Hogby"
