TIL that "Mozilla's new executives, including Varma, come not from promotion within or the open-source community, but from money-making businesses. Varma's last job, for example, was at Meta, where he was responsible for monetizing WhatsApp." Yikes

Have you heard this from other sources too?
"Credible sources in the US civil service have confirmed to me that grants and funding are being reviewed by LLM technology as we speak, looking for both implicit and explicit references to DEI so that they can be defunded, which is an absolutely deranged use of the tool."

How do people say that kind of thing with a straight face?

"A previous version of this article stated that the Harvard Slavery Remembrance Program had been disbanded. To clarify, according to a University spokesperson, the program has not been formally discontinued, though its employees and leaders have been laid off."

Guess what! The Brookline Public Library has CO2 monitors that you can borrow! Very useful for checking out the ventilation in any indoor space that is ventilated (mechanically or naturally) with outdoor air. FREE!!!!!

I'm on the board of the local historical society on an unbridged island in Maine, three miles long and one mile wide. I'm told the forest fire plan is:
1 the town siren will go off in a special pattern
2 the guy with a bulldozer will create a one-mile-long, ten-yard-wide firebreak from shore to shore
3 everything on the wrong side of the firebreak will be abandoned

#Cooking advice please 🙏
I bought *frozen* brussel sprouts and it turns out they have a mushy texture. What can I do with them so that the texture isn't off-putting? Cabbage soup maybe? But even in soup I usually just saute cabbage, I don't boil it for hours until it's limp. Maybe a cream of cabbage soup?

I'm amazed that the top quintile's household income seems to be only four times the lowest quintile's.... I would have expected even wider disparities.

Why is the ratio between the with and without children percentages so different between the different quintiles? Did they take into account different patterns of household size between quintiles? Or maybe households with children are have lower income, within each quintiles, and the effect is stronger in the lower quintiles?

Very surprising to me
#medlibs
Only a very small proportion of Medline records have subject indexing about population groups. If you had asked me to estimate before I actually checked, I would have expected it to be much higher.

Do I know anyone who uses open resources like Lens or OpenAlex or Internet Archive Scholar for comprehensive, reproducible searching?
Evidence synthesis, bibliometrics, scientometrics, metaresearch -- as long as you care about transparency, I'm interested
Especially if you are using non-subscription resources because you are based in the global south, or you're an independent scholar

Is TurnItIn the *only* plagiarism detector software out there?
Excuse me, text similarity report generator
I'm trying to figure out how grad students' theses and dissertations get added to the corpora that plagiarism detectors use, and the people who negotiate our license with Proquest and run our IR are referring me to the people who negotiate our campus license for TurnItIn....

I've never noticed such an explicit statement that a work is in the public domain like this in the wild before!
[Edit: in hindsight maybe "explicit" is overstating things. After all, it never actually uses the words "public domain" 🤦]

Why does my academic library have a subscription to Ancestry? (For comparison, we don't collect consumer health.)
Is there some academic discipline that uses genealogical data?

I like to think that every time someone sees a lone masker (me obviously) on the ferry, it's a little tiny deposit in their "masking is ok actually" savings account, ready for a future withdrawal. After all, "masks when sick" is a big win compared to "never masks."
