When my mother was grading exams, she saw the same grammatical error over and over again, so that at some moment she had to go to the dictionary to check the word because she began to doubt.
That happens to me with LLMs. I'm skeptical, but I receive so much hype, that I began to question myself.

A generalized probability theory allows you to describe quantum phenomena like entanglement without being quantum mechanics.
This is very intriguing because it may suggest that quantum mechanics is just one possibility in an ocean of possibilities. One could imagine other universes being governed by theories that are not quantum mechanics. I guess that philosophically speaking one could always imagine this, but with generalized probability theory we have a basis on physics.

@nprofile…u6vt sorry for the delayed answer. I think that the design seems a mix of ideas (attention, feed forward neural networks) connected in a very specific way. That seems very specific, very concrete, so more artificial than natural. Of course, this is just a point of view, indeed in physics (my field) there has been a lot of debate about wether naturalness is important or not.

Polemic thought of the day: I guess some of you have seen the architecture of a Transformer (the ML tool, not the alien robots). It looks so contrived and unnatural (a new case of a physicist obsessed with naturalness). Yes, I'm sure there're good reasons for each step, but the overall design looks so forced. It makes me think that they can't be the last word, even although they are the among the leading tools nowadays.
If you look at other competing architectures, like a convolutional or a graph neural network, you feel that there's an idea there, an idea that is simple, elegant and physically sounded.

Greg Chaitin on famous physicist John Wheeler asking Gödel about uncertainty: 'Well, one day I was at the Institute for Advanced Study, and I went to Gödel's office, and there was Gödel. I said "Professor Gödel, what connection do you see between your incompleteness theorem and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle?" And Gödel got angry and threw me out of his office!'
Whiteson and Warner tell this in their book. Others say that Gödel just changed the topic of the conversation (which it seems more plausible to me). Anyway, W & W explain that in physics you look for the axioms instead of building from them, which "sidesteps incompleteness". You are constantly adding extra axioms whenever you need them, which is something that is not seen as elegant, mathematically speaking.

There's an academy in Spain offering different courses in Physics online. Here's one that interests me a lot: Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. The professor comes from the University and is an expert on the topic.
Although it's in Spanish, you can check the syllabus. There're super cool stuff that I know nothing about like quantum contextuality, Kochen-Spekkens theorem Fubini-Study metric or the quantum pigeonhole principle (you can put 3 pigeons in 2 holes ?!!?). Other stuff I know, like Bell inequalities or the quantum no cloning theorem.
It sounds amazing. The handicap? It costs 400 €. There're 20 hours, so we have 20 hours per class, which I know is not expensive, taking into account you're hearing an expert in the matter. But 400 euros...

I went to a "reading party" this evening. It was cool. It's great meeting people with similar interests than you.
I have some difficulties finding people akin to me. Things could be different in Madrid or Barcelona, but I live in the Canary Islands. So I feel a bit alone, sometimes. Yes, I'm an introvert and I appreciate moments of loneliness, but I need to socialise, too.
Meeting these people who enjoy things I also enjoy was great. After the party, a few of us went for a coffee and we continue chatting there. I took the number of 2 ladies. I had barely met women after a breakup at the end of Summer. I was so happy with all this that I had a kind of positive Stendhal's syndrome: it took me an effort to cook my dinner, I was just in the sofa hearing music and feeling great.
Now, I'm not naive. These activities are 1 or 2 per month. I will still feel alone sometimes. It would take time to build new friendships. I still don't know many people interested in scientific stuff. And the 2 women I exchanged numbers with are very nice, but probably we aren't compatible enough for more than friendship.
But the overall was really positive: a new space to share with nice and similar people, the possibility of building new friendships, the possibility of more interesting conversations with interesting people... not a minor thing.

It's interesting how Whiteson and Warner, in his book, remark that the Planck length (calculated combining G, c and h to have units of length) is just an hypothesis. It's not clear, and certainly hasn't been proved, that that length exists, nor it necessarily would have that value.

2026-01-16 23:36:29 UTC

Something cool that I have learnt (and should probably already know) in Don Koks' book is that you can find the area between, say 2 vectors in a 6 dimensional Euclidean space, you can do it as the determinant of the matrix product of the vectors as (2, 6) and (6, 2) matrices.
That's called the square of the generalized determinant. You can check that for a vector with itself you obtain the length of the vector. Good.
Koks says later that you can do this kind of stuff with non Euclidean space. I knew that in 3D you can find the area assuming a constant coordinate as \(dA(u^i=cte)=\sqrt{gg^{ii}}dx^ldx^k\) (not sum in i). But I don't know the origin of it.

TIL: While the eyes seem to have evolved many times, hearing could have evolved only once. Vertebrates use tiny filaments for hearing, insects use a surface, but at the molecular level they look very similar, so they could point out to the same origin.
If it only happened once, perhaps it's an oddity. The possibility of hearing music could be an extremely unlikely event that in other planets doesn't exist. But no, even if it only happened here once, most scientists think that there're so many advantages with hearing that it probably evolved in other planets, too.

Carl Sagan and others suggested that communication with an alien form could be possible thanks to the common language of science and mathematics. But Whiteson and Warner aren't so sure.
Aliens could be so different that they could have discovered other mathematics (they show an example of a species made of plasma, a continuum species that doesn't develop arithmetic in terms of naturals or integers). Or they could be a spacefaring species of advanced engineering but no science.
But even assuming that we share math and science, things could be difficult. Philosopher Karim Jebari says that "translation between speakers with no common language requires repeated interaction in a familiar context." If we receive an alien signal we won't have neither repetition nor familiar context, so deciphering it would be essentially impossible.

Alain Aspect doesn't mention in his book that the first person to find the flaw in von Neumann's proof that a hidden variable theory wasn't possible was Grete Hermann. He mentions that John S. Bell needed months of work to find the mistake by von Neumann (although it needs to be said that Bell worked on this only in his free time, weekends). Bell knew that David Bohm had published a working theory with hidden variables, so von Neumann had to be wrong.
Grete Hermann studied mathematics and philosophy (Noether was one of ther doctoral advisors). She found the flaw in von Neumann's result, but she was a complete unknown (and a woman) criticising a figure considered a genius. Her chances of succeeding were very low and her results were ignored and forgotten. She was rediscovered by Bell, among others.
I'm not criticising Aspect for not mentioning her. She's even today unknown by most physicists. Or perhaps Aspect knows her but wanted to focus on Bell because he found testable results. Aspect wrote a semi-popular book, not an historical research article. Anyway.

I'm finishing Alain Aspect's book, and unsurprisingly it's very good. It can be a popular book, but I would say it shouldn't be your first popular book on QM. The appendices offer more details, like a lovely proof of Bell's inequalities (the CHSH version). Now I'm close to read the proof about the no cloning theorem. I expect the same clarity.
Can you guess what does he retain between realims or locality?......... yes, he keeps realism! Aspect says that he abandons locality, but he insists that is a form of no locality that still forbids useful superluminal communication. Another physicist that I know that has abandoned locality is Sean Carroll. (Indeed Carroll said that he was working or wanted to work on why the universe looks so much as local when it really isn't).
Aspect also mentions superdeterminism... clearly not in favor. #physics

Sometimes you don't like a book that is considered a classic or that most people consider good. It may happen. It has even happened to scholars. You approached the book in a neutral way and you didn't like it.
But sometimes you actually *want* to like a book, but you can't! It happened to me with Kim Stanley Robinson Mars trilogy. I really wanted to like it, but I couldn't: overwritten, excessive. "She sat in the audience thinking - someone here has cancer, someone has a broken heart, someone's soul is lost, someone feels naked and foreign, thinks they once knew the way but can't remember the way, feels stripped of armor and alone, there are people in this audience with broken bones, others whose bones will break sooner or later, people who've ruined their health, worshiped their own lies, spat on their dreams, turned their backs on their true beliefs, yes, yes, and all will be saved. All will be saved. All will be saved."

There's a noise table full of people next to me in the restaurant. Probably after dinner they would go out til late. It's funny how I don't feel any necessity of that. I'll return home now, I will probably watch a bit of Invasion (not great, but entertaining so far), read a bit, look Mastodon... I certainly prefer this.
(Of course, I like (and need!) being with people, but I prefer small groups and close people).

Hearing "Retronautas", a Spanish podcast about science fiction, they comment how most of the sf writer of the 70s lost interest in the Solar System once the data from the exploration probes began to appear, and these data showed how unsuitable for humans the Solar System is.
One of the exceptions was Arthur C. Clarke, who kept a great interest in the data from the probes and in the Solar System, as his works shown. I wonder if this could be linked with the low interest he had in the characters or in their development.

@nprofile…8eua yes, I think he was a very practical man. It's curious that he, being a theoretical physicist, was more "practical" than Aspect, being an experimental, and intrigued by the true meaning of QM. I guess in this context practical and experimental doesn't overlap.

@nprofile…578r I see myself reflected. I can agree going to the lunch or dinner and then leaving, but staying later in a pub or disco, definitely not for me. I take these big social events in very small and separated doses.

Alain Aspect tells that Feynman considered the EPR paradox in his famous "Lectures on Physics". Feynman said that the EPR could be explained as the case of the interference of just one particle was explained. Clearly not.
Decades later, Feynman changed his mind, as he stated in a famous article, pioneer in quantum information. And when Aspect gave a conference about EPR in Caltech in 1984, an old Feynman attended to the conference.
